  2. I am thinking of getting one of these turbine hvlp guns will this one work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 I usually get rattle cans but this is getting expensive.
  3. I used to be a programmer and I thought PC was the way to go, now that I have a mac, i will never go back. I want a computer that does music, pictures, cd videos and websurfing, the mac is built around that. would I program on a mac, no way, or run a db? nope pc for me for enterprise stuff. plus it has garage band which is quite awesome. I just wish someone hear could point me to a good site, I have been looking online and not found much.
  4. I am only buying used cars now, its not worth the price of new and who really cares? get an extended warrenty and good to go. with guitars I have the same feeling. buy a quality instrument and go from there. I mean I have seen custom shop lp's that have moved from bad wood and what not. Or even PRS that play like ****. most of my customers have said they would rather have a good playing guitar than one that looks like a piece of art... Is it supposed to sit on the wall or play it? I mean if I had a lamborghini, f'n a I would drive it hard. In terms of depth your right lacquer is the only substance that gives off the depth look. what I find crazy is the fender and gibson shop selling guitars that are aged like the real ones, aka srv guitar, and jimi page lp. give me a break, paying more to have the same streaks, and color run out.
  5. I have a question on finishing... why do most people need to have a perfect finish on a guitar? I mean you play it once or gig it you run the risk of having it beat up somewhat... is it an image thing? or what? To be honest from a tone perspective all that lacquer covers the tone of the wood. So why is lacquer the standard? thoughts on the history of lacquer and guitars... I know about the stability and protecting from water and all that, but there are some oils that are just as close.
  6. here are some of my odd shaped guitars.... One of these was made for a customer, others for myself.
  7. the inductor is the little thing that is blue and has the three wires per side sticking out. One side is marked P for primary, the other side is not marked. The inductor is pulled out of the switch on the bypass. the way the switch works is in parallel to the system, so when you are on the bypass mode, the switch is connected to nothing.
  8. play quarters on your guitar... just make sure you are not a violent drunk
  9. I just got my 15' jet planer working. a major problem with guitars is that we are usually dealing with bodies just about 13'. Notice how most fenders fit under that 13' barrier? On ebay there is a cheap chinese made 14 planer, don't know if its anygood, its cheap as hell. if you are buying your wood from a lumber yard good idea to plane the wood, if you are buying from a full wood shop like gallery hardwoods, or owl hardwood, they do most of that already. my advice to you is search ebay for used tools. look for a planer in your area that you can pickup. most of the larger 15+ planers are industrial stuff and last forever. just remember industrial means 220v so you may have to rewire your garage like I did last week. some cabinet shops will help you out, others will tell you piss off... a lumber yard will have millwork stuff so always ask. A fair right in the chicago area is a dollar a min... good luck.
  10. Hey all, how many of you are using a mac for recording? I just got a mac and garageband is a pretty cool piece of software... how many of you are using it? anyone know where to get some blues backing tracks? drums etc? Thanks, Derek
  11. When I started building my switches, I went through 200 some odd different caps, its actually a lot of fun to see what caps sound better clean and distorted, but I was un-employed and had plenty of time on my hands. I never like mylar caps, but thats what every one usually uses. if you are going to play around the old orange drop caps sound great, but I could not fit that many on my switch. The varitone is a cool mod to play around with, don't go to radio shack buy from mouser or newark electronics. rockon
  12. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...3818264454&rd=1
  13. band saw.... life is easier after band saw! drill press is handy but if you have a small hand drill you are ok. planner is great too but expensive. -Derek
  14. its a new tenon that I am playing with, there is supposed to be an insert that you don't see from the pic. It should work...
  15. Here are a couple of things that I am working on. A LP style guitar that got messed up royally, I finally got access to a 15' planer to take off a good section of the top. Now I can add a neck... This guitar started as a setneck, but the mahogany warped, then my fretboard cracked, so.... it was a project I was working on a couple of years ago that I left around cause the quilt is great... What do you think about the color? The guitar backside is paint gold, the LP gold from guitar reranch. Custom guitar I am building for a guy with the last name Z. Hollowed out body, from PANGA PANGA a rare hardwood. Machines great, wonder what this will sound like. The custom Z inlays are crappy I used a substance called inlace which dyed the fretboard in some bad spots...
  16. 1/4 inch blade to resaw, just don't think that would work, would need to see that, gosh imagine how long that would take I work at a wood shop where we have a resaw machine laguna 20. It has a 1 1/2 blade, my gramps a master craftsman, used a hitachie sp??? with a 3inch blade. I have a 14' delta with a riser block and I am still figuring how to set it up right, I spent the cash on a 3/4 carbide tooth blade, and I think it cuts a 1000 times better the the stock 3/8 blade. Also if you have access to a blade tension gauge use it or buy one.
  17. 15% to all forum members. I need to sell some of this stuff. please please bid. Snakewood fretboard!!!! MY auctions
  18. um... seems like maybe its two and a .25 to some people... ha ha laugh and the world laughs with you, build a different guitar and you stand alone.
  19. I shipped a piece of Pauduk to a customer in the UK. Never got there. Contacted customs, said that the wood was not declared correctly and that it had to be burned due to imports. I was like ***!!!! I guess some woods are banned in some countries, I don't know it was a lot of hassel and I was out 100 bones. If someone contacts me I will ship overseas, but it is damn expensive. I had a guy who wanted a peice like this and he was down under, AU. I quoted him 75 bucks for shipping. he thought I was trying to rip him off. I have a discount account with fedex and still shipping was a bear. Shipping to Canada is ok, and if the guy is legit I will sell it. If you want to bid on my stuff go ahead, I just need to know that people are serious thats why I limit it.
  20. Shipping wood is really tough to overseas. I won't do it, if the wood gets stuck in customs I am screwed. I sell my varitone switches everywhere, I have sold switches to every contient cept antaritca. I will sell parts everywere, hey its all money right!
  21. I voted for the cool design, nice job ktl. guitars need some new blood out there, awesome job. I like the inlay on the acoustic though very cool... I don't know if I am ready for pro division yet, maybe one or two more. -Derek
  22. I did a lacewood top a while back took the stain very well. I did not do a sun burst just a regular stain. topped it with lacquer and looked great. an orange stain will look good and bring out some of the woods color.
