  1. I am convinced that it has to be a big wish for you and that you have to love fast guitar stuff or you will never succeed....

I think you're dead right there.

What I never have got my head around is this - I can't 'hear' the notes in my head any faster than I can play them.

    So.

If you're soloing really fast stuff, do you hear those notes and want to play them, and therefore do play them, or is it a more subconcious thing so you play the lick?

  2. Some interesting stuff here.

I've done countless mods, refrets, refinishes (ok ish but I lack patience), and assembled several guitars from combinations of new and old parts, but am just about to start on a complete build.

I think part of the answer really depends on how long you expect to wait before you can play your creation. If you want it in a month or two, get a kit or someone to build it for you.

If you're prepared to put months in and progress slowly and patiently, I don't think it's impossible that you can build something you're really proud of (at least that's my personal gamble).

But I think I can guarantee that if you do build one, kit or full custom job, it won't be your last.

  3. My mesa studio 22 head was too loud for our practice situation at times, 2 el84 tubes are between 18 and 30 watts. Its for sale btw.

Wicked amp. Mine blew up :D That used to walk all over a Peavey 300W bass rig if I let it.

    I usually did B)

Using a fender princeton DSP now. Small, VERY loud (allegedly 65w) tranny combo, 1x12", easy to carry (much lighter than the studio.22), and wins the fight with a monster premier kit and a Trace Elliot 150W bass rig..

In fact, it's perhaps too loud. but nice to have the spare noise there.

  4. For years I've been planning to do the Danny Gatton mod where you replace the side dots with fake diamonds. Supposedly you can see them in low light as long as there's a light somewhere around that they sparkle from.

hey nice idea! Search Ebay for cubic zirconium...

  5. Long time ago - about 1978 - the band I was in used to play a lot of new wave stuff - Johnny Thunders, Pistols, Ramones..

Marshall and an LP DC-type (Gordon Smith) springs to mind, but I myself used what is now called a fat strat into a Sound City 50W Concorde combo. Wish i still had it...

  6. i think the neck thru is easier by far...getting that damn neck pocket perfectly routed and aligned was horrible for my dumb ass <snip>

when routing the neck pickup on a neck thru though....use a plank of wood to hold your router above the level of the neck...

bet my ass is dumber than yours!

Thanks - I'll remember that when and if I get that far! I'm not altogether optomistic as this is by far the biggest piece of woodwork I have ever contemplated!

My main rule is take my time and think it through.

  7. 2500?! :D I didnt know the stuff existed. I think i might have to pop to Halfords and look in the paint section and see what they have there! Stuff can be so hard to find in the UK. Thanks for your help!! B)

Try a few of the motor factors - I've found a huge variety of grits in them!
