Little update here,

heres the neck, with headstock binding and quilted maple veneer (believe me its there, even if you cant really see it in the pic, lol) :

and heres the african mahogany body starting to shape a bit, i left the up portion untouched to make the neck pocket routing easy and to have a good solid base for the router, hope to rout that before christmas :

i have ordered quilted maple veneer for the body yesterday, dont really know when it will come here since im in canada and bought from veneersupplies.com in the states.

One question for you :

How thick is your quilt? is it a veneer or a top ?

im trying to locate a place where they sell quilted maple veneer and didnt found one yet, any help would be appreciated. stew mac is about the only place i saw a good quilted top, its about 1/8 thick if i remenber.

the neck angle is there due to the height of the bridge and to reduce the string action.

the bridge, well its hard to tell from the picture, maybe you got too big of gauge for the string, maybe the spring need to be change or just need to adjust the spring claw in the back to even out the pull of the string.

Its shaping up really nice, keep it up !!!

The scale lenght begin at the edge/end of the nut, fretboard side.

you dont have to remove the fretboard but you will surely need to enlarge and slot deeper where the nut is seating on the neck.

I think any OIL based paint can be used, let it be lacquer or enamel etc.

some of the swirl weve seen in here have been made with TESTOR and HUMBROL paint, those small bottle you use for painting plastic model car,plane,bike etc.

be sure to make some test with your paint , by putting your paint and the borax in a container filled with water and dipping a piece of scrap wood.

LOL, one step at a time here, im far from done on this and i still can screw up big time, especially in the fretting area, that part is scaring me the most right now but im thinking about building a neck jig when the time come.

i have binded the headstock and put a quilted maple veneer on it and im doing staining experiment on scrap pieces, and im working on handplaning my body blank right now, ill try to post pics when further progress will be made.

The first one seem on the cheap side, the second one seems much better i think, i was wondering if any of you here bought one of those or has any experience with them.

In Dan Erlewine book *GuitarPlayer Repair Guide*, he shows a way to transform a neck with a standard nut to a locking nut, but its a fender neck so the headstock isnt angle, which i presume yours is.

hes using a wood block to raise the dremel with router attachment to the level of about the fretboard and use another one on the fretboard itself to act as a stopper and side alignement for the dremel.

Maybe you could try with a angle block on the headstockso the dremel would lay horizontal.

What i would try personally is buying a ground stock (rectified piece of metal) piece of about an ½ inch square and tape sand paper on one face with double faced tape and sand very carefully where the nut is seating on the neck until you have reached the proper height for your lock nut making sure im always parallel.

one suggestion i would make for your routing is use a forsner bit to take out as much as you can and after use your template/router for finishing up cleanly, less wood to take out so less chance of bearing leaving the template.

Drak sanding block is what i use also for sanding straight . mine is a block of hard maple about 2" x 2" x 16", i got different grit on each side and i stick it there with double faced tape.

hmm, i think the tutorial in here is the only one you can get on the web.

Maybe you could explain the part which you have difficulty with and someone who actually did it could explain a little more for you.

Finished gluing the LEDs last night , heres how it look now, every solder have been dipped in PLASTIC DIP (sort of rubber coating that harden for tool and stuff) to prevent any short circuit, again sorry for the poor quality pics but its the best i can do..

Also, ive bought my wood for my body this week, its 5 block of mahogany (honduras, but aint 100% sure) 2¾ x 2¾ x about 18/19 inches, i have started to resaw them with my tablesaw to 1 7/8, so thats leave me with about ¾ left each for another project, was on sale at $5.00 a block, not bad. after slicing them i will join and glue them.

Ah yeah, i forgot to mention,

im not using my super bright leds, im keeping for a future project for front marker one day cause like you said , its WAY too bright for side one and its literally blinding you when it hits you right in the eyes, so i got a pack a green and a pack of red normal led, 12 led for $1.50, lol, way cheaper then the super bright.

For the resistance i will use one for each led like on your tutorial.

Hi everyone,

heres a long due update of my project;

Fretboard is slotted and ive put the white plastic binding on it and plastic diamond shape inlay i made from a pickguard blank material.Scale length is 24.75 and radius is 16". The fretboard is also drilled for the led that will be the side marker, just done them yesterday and at this point the fb was just taped with double faced tape so i can get it out and install the led in it and after that i will glue it permanently.

I will buy some wood for the body real soon, probably will be mahogony with a stripe of dark wood sandwich in between like wenge or bubinga, and a flame or quilted maple veneer above all this. Im starting of thinking about a blue/aqua stain on the figure of the wood and a black burst all around, not really decided yet on this, still have plenty of time left to make up my mind for this,lol.
