  1. Yeah true (*bangs head on desk), but this was kind of a learning project anyway. I'm gonna build a strat soon so I wanted to use this guitar as a practice run for applying lacquer. I wanted to see the grain and I wanted the guitar to be totally black. The thought did cross my mind to go surfer green but the inlay on the fretboard said otherwise. I already have some Blackout pups to install. Since the body I have for my strat is just bare wood I thought I'd just strip everything off this one. Looking back I think I would have tried chemicals but idk if that would take the grainfill out. Good tip though. I never consider leaving the grain filler. If I had known that I would have just painted it white and stained the neck to look vintage and lacquered it. *tip- I was trying to strip the neck from a Ibanez Roadstar while back and someone told me to sandblast it. So i took it into my schools woodshop and blasted neck and it made it really smooth. It dulled the dulled the finish but it felt a lot faster. (Thats the neck I'm gonna use for my strat. I think Ill use some chemicals this time.)
  2. So about 5 months ago I thought it would be cool to refinnish my schecter blackhawk. I had to rewire it anyway so i thought, "why not make look how I want too?" So I looked on the project guitar website and saw three options, heat, sand, and chemicals. Not knowing what I was up against I decided to sand the thing thing. The neck when fast but the body was basswood with grain filler 1mm deep into the pores and a nice thick coat of black paint. This thing took me FOREVER to sand. NEVER AGAIN!! So I finished my sanding, stained the headstock, neck, and body black, and now I want to spray some lacquer on this bad boy. I have a HVLP turbine spay gun but I have never spayed anything before. Are there any good spay tuts out there? I live in Tampa Florida, will humidity be a problem? Thanks James
  3. So I was just told about the Fender Mico-Tilt System http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/El_Guitar_Neck_Angle.htm that allows you to adjust the angle that the neck meets the body on American Fender Strats. I was thinking of installing it in my guitar I want some input. thanks
  4. Hey this is kind of a dumb questing but I have this book "guitar Player Repair Guide" by Dan Erlewine and on page 234 it mentions 60/40 Resin Core Solder. Is this the same as Rosin Core solder, or is it a typo? Just wanted to ask because this book has never been wrong before and I've never heard the tern "Resin Core". The book says thats the best solder for guitar electronics.
  5. Just to get this clear. I measures all of these dimensions (yes the neck has a radius other than the fingerboard). It would fit this body. As I mentioned, I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do about the body. I'm still considering making my own. I just don't want to go through the hassle of stripping one, and filling, and redrilling holes. Really my main questions where one the neck and paint. Ive decided to sand the neck, but if anyone would like to help me out on paint suggestions I would appreciate it. I've never painted a guitar before. What kind of paint do i need? Are there any particularly good brands. Are there any good tuts. on painting? :]
  6. Ive researched roadstars a lot and from what i can tell, its a stratneck with a different headstock and paint. Ive seen a lot of them sanded and stripped down and they look beautiful. To stay with my creamsicle theme i want it to be the stick. Yes I checked the radius on it and its the same a strat. neck. Well thats the thing, when i purchases the guitar I was like, "Free-floating bridge, hmmm ok why not?". Later I realized that I don't really use the whammy bar that much, Only for a little accenting, and when I bend notes the bridge would pull up a bit and I couldn't bend as far. So when the bridge broke I could have purchased a rose and given that a try but I think I like a simple fender bridge better. In case anyones interested in roadstar I'm selling a lot of parts off this guitar on ebay.My Store You guys are probably right about the body. I know I want an alder body but I'm still debating on weather or not i want to make one or buy one. What I was thinking with the stewmac one is they have a 100% satisfactory guarantee to i can get the unfinished body and look at the grain and if i don't like it, send it back. Thanks for everyone input :]
  7. Alright so a month ago the bridge on my Ibanez Roadstar II 440 broke (lame). This was my main guitar but I never really used the trem that much. So rather than trying to find a guitar that I like... I've decided to build one. Now I havent really done anything yet, that where you guys come in. Given that the roadstar series are known for having great necks and are very similar to the fender necks made in the same factory that year, I want to include it in my project. FIRST QUESTION: What is the best way to remove the paint for this neck? So after stripping the neck I'm planning on purchasing one of Stewmac's Alder Strat bodies http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bodies,_necks,...rat_Bodies.html and painting it orange. SECOND QUESTION: What kind of paint do you use on guitars? A friend of mine suggested that I airbrush the part my arm rests on to look like someone took a bite out of it. http://www.icecreamplanet.com/AA.creamsicle.jpg Then I think I can take it form there. Sooo anyone that has any input please... (i hope this wasnt the wrong area)
