  1. Hey I just did my first inlay (dots and my name at the 12th fret) and I'm suprised at how well it has all come out, I mean its by no means perfect, there were gaps before gluing, but they seem to have disapeared after begining radiusing (I expected to see dry black glue between the wood and inlay)

    Now is this because...

Its ebony FB, I used black super glue and the inlay is either dark of very contrasting and so I am not looking hard enough and the glue filled gaps between inlay and wood are still there.

    or

the glue has caused the wood to expand tightly against the inlay material? But I used superglue, which as far as I know wouldnt cause the wood to expand or swell in any way?

So that said, could you cause wood to swell tightly against an inlay to close gaps? If you could get water based glue such as titebond to glue inlay material to the FB it would be a pretty cool way of ensuring a tight fit.

  2. Thanks for all the advice guys really helpful! :D

When should I change grit? Does any one change grit up from 80 before the radius is fully complete? I was thinking of doing that (just when the two sides are about to mee) to make sure too much wood doesnt get taken off while I'm still on the lower grits so I dont end up with a paper thin fret board :D

  3. Hey I will be radiusing and fretting my board soon and I just want to clear some stuff up B)

I will start out on 80 grit on the radius block and go up through the grades, is they're any particular tricks and tips to doing this well? What grit would you suggest going up to? Its ebony and I was going to go up to about 2000 just to make it nice and shiny smooth :D

Also I will probably want to stain the board at some point to make it a more uniform black, but at which point do I do this? Once I have finished radiusing up to 2000 grit? Or before? Am I likely to sand through it?

I have also read to bevel the fret slot slightly like so (link) but how deep does the bevel go? Half the slot depth? A quarter?

Do I bevel the entire length of the fret slot? If I do wont the bevel be visible from the side of fret board as a gap? Do I fill that gap?

Whats a good fret end bevel angle? I have only ever seen 35 and 45 degrees used I think? Should I use a special tool, or is files by hand fine? Is there any advantage to the j custom ball fret ends?

I'm going to be pressing them in with an arbor, but it will be my first time and I dont have anything to practice on, can any one offer any advice? Do I just squeeze them in pretty hard? I dont wanner compress the wood...

If I think of any thing else I'll add it on :D

    Cheers!!!

  4. I have a Baggs T Bridge and CTRL X (thanks piedpiper) which I will put on a build in the future (that hasnt been planned yet lol)

and I was wondering if there is a wood that is particularly suited to piezo use? Or the best acoustic sounding wood?

lol I know it sounds a bit tone voodooey but I have no idea for the body wood yet so I was just wondering.

    Cheers

  5. I am looking for a enough spalted maple to do an explorer, preferably one peice (I know, very unlikely) or a ready book matched set.

Preferably already filled/stabalised as I dont really know how to do that so I would like a peice ready to cut and use.

I'm looking for as clean as possible (like just white in colour) with thin ink lines, kind of like this but more busy throughout not just in the center.

If you have any please provide me with pictures I would really appreciate it.

I'm in the UK but willing to ship from where ever as its easier to come by in the US.

    Cheers

  6. I need to learn how to set my band saw up, or at least have some one set it up for me, or may be even change the blade, because In Perrys multiscale build vids, he bandsaws the body blank so easily, and so cleanly round all the corners, and my bandsaw feels like a bit of a struggle getting it to cut (it doesnt have any trouble its just slow) so I dunno if I have it on the right settings.

I know but a mesas are the only amp I know I'll like the sound of, all my idols use them (metallica and dream theater basically) where as engls and peaveys I would have to test extensively to know which one to get, although I wouldnt mind a powerball (thats down to Broderick using one)

  7. lmao I know its stupid aint it, I had money before I started building guitars, its an expensive hobby :D

GAH I'm so f**king angry, I bought a mesa boogie dual rec on ebay for 584 (one of the best prices I've EVER seen on ebay) and the guy was a total tool! Didnt reply to any of my emails, and now hes no longer registered with ebay so I've no chance of ever getting it

At least the money I would have spent on that can now go towards a new build :D
