  1. I just took my first Black Acacia side out of the bending jig, the wood turned green, what do you think caused this, I think it might be moisture, but then i was thinking that it could be some reaction from the aluminum.?
  2. Well i just put 150 Watt bulbs in, now the problem is that they are getting too hot and starting to burn the inside of the bending jig, causing smoke. What did you all use to line the inside of your jigs to prevent it from burning?
  3. I have 60 watt bulbs in there right now but i don't think that they are strong enough, I think I am going to go with 80Watt bulbs.
  4. yes i did wet the wood for about 15mins., I am not sure if the wood got TOO wet!
  5. I just made a new bending jib, I tried a piece of curly Maple in the bender. When I took the piece out it sprang back almost straight. what might have caused this to not take the bend, do you think that i need bigger light bulbs.....? -thanxs Jeff
  6. SnowGTR do you have a business doing this plating? I've been trying to chrome a plastic visor for my pickup for a year and have had no luck. One place gave me a Very Very high quote. I have tried the Killer Chrome by ALSA it didn't look like chrome in the end. Mabey I needed more but we will never know. I suggest not using the Killer Chrome, it's an expensive experiment, trust me. -Jeff
  7. I know you are probably thinking, "great another question by this guy!!!!". But anyways I ran into another problem. I am trying to get prices from different places for Mahogany to use for my neck. I called two places and they told me that they can not give me any quotes unless I know the Board ft. . I was just wondering what the formula is to figure this out. I was quoted $11 per board ft. My calculations came up with about $281 for the wood for the neck, so I know that I did something wrong someplace. the formula which I used was T"X W" X L" divided by 12.
  8. Thanks guys for the info, I live in Massachusetts, not too many dealers here. I was trying to go with one solid peice of wood because I figured it would be stronger.
  9. I was just wondering where everyone bought their wood too. I have been looking around for Mahogany for a neck and have found that in my area it is very hard to find a board thick enough. Is there any good site online to order the wood from???
  10. Thanks Rich for the info. I only ask about the CA because I am using Black Acacia (Australian Blackwood) for the first time. My mentor has also never used it so I am a little worried about it cracking, and since I only have one shot I want to take all precautions.
  11. Awsome build. Great inlays. I was wondering if the rosette inlay helps support the grain of the soundhole?? also how did you do the rosette inlay, did you cut all of the pieces and and then traced out the hole or was it vise versa??? Last question I swear, the Trick with the CA glue before you bend the sides, does this make it less vulnerable to splitting while bending?? and do you have to do this before you thickness sand the sides or is it okay to it after???? Sorry for all the questions, I am new to building on my own, I've had a great teacher, Carl A. Hoyt (don't know if anyone has heard of his work), but I do tend to ask Alot of questions.
  12. yea I think that I am not going to use the Zibrawood for the fretboard because of the Inlay that I hope to do. I think I am going to go with mahogany. I will keep you posted Scab on how it sounds....
  13. I am using Black Acacia (Australian Blackwood) for the back and sides, Sitka Spruce Bearclaw for the top. I am trying to decide what wood to use for the neck. at first I was thinking of Mahogany but due to the fact that I probably will use a Zibrawood fretboard, I don't think that the Mahogany would blend in. My other thought was to use Curly maple for the neck but I am not sure if these combos will not look good due to most of the woods being light in color. I was wondering what everyone else thought about these combos, and if they had any other suggestions for Neck wood?
  14. I was wondering if anyone has used Black Acacia for their sides. I was wondering how easy it is to bend, does it split easily?? does it have the same qualities as Koa??
  15. I was wondering what type of clamps everyone was using. My teacher used Cam clamps but they are pretty pricey, so i am looking at a cheaper way out.
  16. I was wondering how thick everyone made their tops, and if you make it thinner towards the edges to allow it to vibrate more.
