  1. actually, moving the string up and down is only adjusting the action. the strings are not all exactly the same length. the nut is straight, so all the strings start out at the same point, but the saddles on the bridge are never perfectly aligned with each other. they're staggered a little bit. adjusting intonation adjusts how much they're staggered.
  2. yah you have 4 octaves , but you don't have even 2 full octaves on each string. those 36 fret guitars actually have 5 full octaves without bending.
  3. i'll get back to you when the time comes. it's not gonna be any time too soon i can tell you that much. not a lot of 8 string guitar pickups, so i'll have to see if i can find something i like if i actually manage to go through with building an 8 string.
  4. i just remembered something else that could help you if you were willing to spend like $50. http://www.guitarbuildingtemplates.com/ they have a jem template.
  5. thanks a lot. now i just have to get my ass going on building the 6 string that i'll be doing first.
  6. why wouldn't you be able to? you get a chart for your scale length, and it'll give you a measurment for each fret. then just mark them off, measuring from the nut.
  7. for a future project, i'm thinking of giving a shot at building an 8 string guitar. the problem is, i don't know of any places that would sell an 8 string bridge. so are there any places that sell custom made hardware?
  8. danelectro also made some guitars with more than 24 frets. i can't find the magazine right now, but i know i have one with paul gilbert holding either a 30 or a 36 fret danelectro. and then there's always michael angelo's 29 (?) fret charvel.
  9. thanks. i wasn't sure if the body dimensions would be the same.
  10. i've decided that as soon as i'm done assembling my carvin bolt kit (which is in the mail) i'm going to give building my own guitar a shot. right now what i'm thinking i'm going to try is a 7 string rg/universe styled guitar. so if anyone has any blueprints and/or advise for building a first guitar i'd appreciate it. thanks.
  11. keep in mind that emg 81 and 85 pickups are active. bill lawrence L500-XL is a great hard rock pickup. it's the one dimebag darrell originally used, before seymour duncan paid him to endorse their copy of it.
  12. i don't know what to call it, but the spot where the upper cutaway would be on a double cutaway guitar looks too small to me. i like the general idea of the design, but i'd make that bigger. although judging by the responses so far, i'm in the minority on this one, so probably keep it the same. i like the idea of a 3x3 headstock too. i'd do something in the same style as a prs or schecter headstock.
  13. whoops i misread the topic. i thought he was talking about putting a 24 fret neck on a 22 fret body. i'm not sure if it'll work now.
  14. you can do it. www.warmoth.com sells 22 and 24 fret conversion necks. the thing is, you may have to take your neck pickup out to fit a 24 fretter in. and the biggest thing is, will you actually be able to reack the 24th fret? if your guitar currently has 22, then the cutaway was probably designed so you could just reach 22. if you add 2 more frets on, you won't be able to reach any farther. perfect example of this, gibson les paul doublecut (studio?). i tried one in a guitar shop. sure it has 24 frets, but what's the point when you can only reach 21?
  15. go for the kit. for the same price, you'll get a much better guitar.
  16. yah i was planning on getting a scrap piece of wood and some scrap canvas and trying some stuff out on it. the input jack and screw holes are what's making me nervous right now. and whether or not the paint will react with the filler i'd need to put over the top of the canvas. oh well guess i'll just have to test some stuff out and see how it goes.
  17. that's what my original idea was, but i think he'll do much better work if he's doing it on a material he's familiar with. and not only that, if he screws up a piece of canvas it's not a big deal.
  18. i read the tutorial on applying the material finish and i'm thinking about trying it. would canvas work for this type of project? i'd like to have a friend paint something and then put it on the carvin bolt kit i'll be ordering soon.
  19. $100 saga kit that will feel like a squier when playing it or... $350 carvin kit which will be on par with an american strat... carvin kits are some of the best guitars for the money you can buy. oh yah, and i'm going to buy one soon.
