  1. Say what you will, i found it really great, if only a little too comercial... Weird thing for Dream Theater no? I walk besides you could actually maybe play on radio!!

just about every dream theater album has a song that could easily be a radio hit.

images & words had another day.

awake had lie (i think the silent man could've been one too).

falling into infinity was a big radio-friendly fest, but anna lee and hollow years in particular.

    scenes had through her eyes.

    6DOIT had solitary shell.

most of the train of thought cd could do well as mainstream metal.

that's why i don't understand how everyone just ignored them after pull me under.

i don't think anyone really argues that labrie isn't a good singer from a technical aspect. his range still blows me away. even though he hasn't gone as high in recent DT albums as he did up to awake, he's still got it. the end of ayreon's human equation album proves that quite nicely.

and i like alexi's vocals in children of bodom as well. fits perfectly for my ears.

  2. I got it today, haven't gotten all the way through it yet but I have to say that they really piss me off when they use parts of old songs in new ones.

    Track 1 in particular

Man....do you know Dream Theater at all? This is the third song in a story about Mike Portnoys alcoholism and I think it's very cool that they quote each other. Especially the way they do it: They never directly quote it but usually change the quote somehow.

my conclusions were jumped to from the cover art i saw on MP's forum.

Then sorry for accusing you! Hehe....the real CD's cover has a proper rope for each ball.

i understand dream theater's quoting of glass prison and this dying soul in the root of all evil. but i don't think they did as good of a job this time. this dying soul was a fantastic example of them incorporating the old riff into a new song. it was placed right, and fit perfectly with the song. in the root of all evil it sounds forced to me. particularly the "i can feel my body breaking" section. just sounds like they didn't know what to do to make it different from this dying soul.

i picked the cd up wednesday, and i see what you mean. the execution of the design is much better than i could see from the online pictures. i still don't like the idea though. just does nothing for me.

the cd hasn't fully sunk in for me yet, but i think i'm gonna like it. these walls and i walk beside you were songs i instantly liked. i walk beside you is a perfect example of how james labrie's voice fits with dream theater's music. i can't imagine another singer in that song.

  3. Buy the original cd before jumping to wrong conclusions! :D

my conclusions were jumped to from the cover art i saw on MP's forum. :D

i didn't have time to pick the cd up today, so i'll be getting it tomorrow.

(I have to listen to an album a few times for it to really register, although some I can enjoy on the first listen).

same with me. images and words i didn't really like at all on first listen. same with train of thought and symphony x's divine wings of tragedy. now those are three of my favorite albums.

  4. the cover art for that cd is absolutely aweful.

    I think it's awesome! :D

i guess to each his own. it's just very boring to me. the fact that they just used straight black lines to hold the balls up, that the ball pulled back wouldn't hit the others if it was let go...

i'll have to check labrie's new cd out when i get a chance.

mr. churchyard: ever listened to the commentary on the scenes from new york dvd? "without love, without truth, you can eat my ass and balls"

  5. the cover art for that cd is absolutely aweful. i don't know what they were thinking when they came up with that.

i'll be picking it up tuesday, dream theater being one of my favorite bands.

labrie's voice does seem to be the deciding factor in the band. some people absolutely hate it, but i personally like the way it fits in the band. in any other situation (i.e. ayreon's "human equation" album) i hate it. there's just something about dream theater's style that fits perfectly with his voice for me.

  6. i listened to sparkle. (only once, i'm on dial-up)

i like your singer's voice. (which is pretty rare for me)

but on a first listen, that's the only member of the band that stands out to me. all the other parts sound okay, but there's nothing that really catches my ear.

that said, if i saw you at a local show, i'd buy a cd. sometimes music takes a while to grow on me.

  7. i've never played a taylor baby, but then again i've never played a taylor that i didn't love. (i can't say the same for martin)

i haven't tried seagulls out more than just playing in a guitar shop, but i was very impressed for the time i played them. the necks feel great to me, so try them out and see whether you like them or not.

  8. did you listen to trapped under ice and think "hey that'd work good on my assignment," or did you write the part of your assignment first and then realize that it sounded like metallica later?

if you wrote your part first, and then just realized that it sounded like (maybe even was the exact same) as a metallica song, i don't see a problem. sure you were probably influenced by it, but i know at least when i write music, i'm always influenced by something. it's just that sometimes the influences come out more strongly.

  9. thanks for the comments. i've actually been playing around with that left side. i haven't found anything that i really like yet, so it's all still just on paper.

i hadn't seen that guitar of myka's. it looks really cool. especially those f-holes, very sleek looking.

  10. i was playing around with some graph paper while listening to music last night, and i came up with a new guitar design. i've got quite a few designs laying around, but this is the first singlecut i've ever tried.

i'm just looking for some input; like it or don't? anything you'd change? this isn't to be built any time in the near future, just a "maybe some day" thing.
