sure it can be done.. depending on how it is routed underneath the pickguard you may have to do some routing yourself (or have it done). i would guaruntee the neck pickup area will have to be routed, and likely the bridge (but sometimes these are routed larger just for that). plus, you'll have to alter the pickguard.

effects will work just a good as on a solid body, no problem there... those artstar ibanez' are cool boxes. if you like how it plays, i would pick it up... for pure hendrix tone, you'd have to get a strat, his fingers yada yada yada the same old argument. but if you dig it, dig in, no fear!

not knowing anything else about the project, i just know it is usually possible to recess the TOM, in order to have a straight neck

Anybody notice where the PUP is? It is in the middle, not bridge like most single PUP guitars. And to me, it looks more like an SG than a LP JR. But what do I know?
Personally, I like it the way it is. Yep, it is ugly. But there isn't much that I can think of that will un-ugly that guitar. Plus, if by some bizarre chance that really is a set neck, it ain't agonna come off easy. It's gonna be a bear.
i noticed where the pickup was! hehe... that was one of the selling features... my favorite sound is a double humbucker guitar with both pickups on, and this will be like that but more unique.
plus, it plays reasonably well - i need to set it up, but the frets are all in excellent shape and will soon be shining like the moon after i follow polishing tutorial! the action is great pre-setup
so it is a good time

yep, saga tele or strat... come on, they are not THAT bad... they are a kit, and a kit is never going to give you the ultimate in handmade guitars. but they are fun, a great way to start, and highly recommended from me for beginners.
i haven't had any experience with the strat kit, but in my opinion on the tele kit, you'll want to upgrade at the very least the tuners, and probably the bridge pickup... the tuners it comes with are simply unusable, and the bridge pickup is too too bright.

also no worries about calling the body wood ugly, i know it is ugly and love it that way.. haha.

hehe, i'm back, i'm back
under the pickguard is nothing fantastic and nothing unusual... i'll post pics when i can get them (which won't be for a few weeks unfortunately... just sent the darn thing home and won't have a chance to work on it until i'm done exams).
as for painting it black...... booooorrring! i'd rather have an ugly guitar with character (as this is already) then a plain ol' black one. unless you just mean paint the pickguard black.. in which case i'd probably just make another one out of acrylic. the body colour is so annoying, it doesn't match with anything.. maybe a white acrylic. or a broken mirror.. haha
but burning it.. hmmm.. maybe a burnt finish
i know i'm going to take out the single knob (it's volume, btw) and replace it with a simple kill switch... I'd like it even better if there were no knobs.. pickup right in the sweet spot
thanks for the comments so far, i'd like to hear more...

Hi all...
So I just bought this:
and I'm thinking that the wooden pickguard is hideous... any off-the-cuff suggestions? I'm thinking of staining it a darker walnut, I think that might help.. the pickguard reminds me of plywood tiling at this colour.
-
also someone on here (i think?) suggested to use the hand sanitizer before playing, because it gets rid of residue even left by soap hand washing
-
i agree gorecki.. at the same time, with proper care, i've been able to keep the same set of strings on for almost two months.. granted for performances/recording I would change them... at some point i'd just rather be playing than restringing all the time.

i'd be quite interested
but i can't really speak for the world
-
what did you use to do the mockup?
-
wait, i just found it!
if others are looking, check out his profile... hehe

Mr. Clavin, do you have a website or something anywhere else?
-
AlterBridge is a silly name, i think.. hehe
-
wow, very very nice
what is the headstock inlay made from?
-
well *I* found it very useful, and even after searching (forums and other pages) and asking before for online guitar design sites, didn't get a response. so thanks for the link!
-
randombaz can you give me the link to the site you found?
-
hmm. interesting idea, executed well.. good work!

don't really doodle, but i'm 20 going into third year of a political sciene/english degree... wooooo.
-
looks fan-freakin'-tastic! how much did it end up costing you? looks so good.
-
yeah, anywhere up to $40 is probably a good price for that
-
are you going to be selling this one? i can't afford it, i'm just curious if you're going to be able to let it go.. hehe
-
well i finally got the body today.. it is in reasonable condition, but boy is it ever small! it almost looks like a child's guitar
