  1. Holland seems to be a little behind on diy stuff ey :D but we have a LOT of guitarbuilders! so there must be a place to snatch some magnets.

shipping from the us to holland is about 14 bucks rofl. so i'll have a better look around overhere. i got some emg johnson passives for now.

thx for the Neodymium tip and all. I checked stewmac but i had a better site i cant remember but ill post it here as soon as i get to it.

  2. Hi everyone! since i was planning to build a guitar myself, this was the place to look around for usefull info and alot of beautifull artwork of people, some more professional then others, alot of knowledge is stored here so thats good.

anyway, i did a search and had a look around on other threads and leardned alot about pups and stuff but still some unanswered questions remain.

I want to expreriment with building my own pickups. So the first thing to get is, i guess, a magnet. well, where do i find a magnet suitable for a descent pickup :D what are the things to look out for. they come in various forces, right? how should i know wich one...

There are lots of guitarnuts who build them themself, and they sell them as well sometimes. Where do they get proper magnets from? :S i know you can give a certain piece of metal magnetics somehow.

cant i take a magnet from like the kitchen door or stuff like that ? :D

Pics will follow soon in the in progress and finished work area.

    thx alot.

  3. bass strings can be very very expansive indeed. i use ernie balls now because i couldnt afford better at the time, after 1 month the low e was sounding a little dead already.

i've allways been playing d'addario's on guitar but i bought DR's last week and they sound much brighter and sharper. they claim to outlast other strings when looked after properly. they stay in tune way better then any other i've had.. B)

i have to mention i've allways been playing 0.09 and this set is 0.11 :D

that probably explains the good tuning a little.

  4. Hello, im building a solid body from mahogany with a birdseye maple top. the top is 0.5 cm thick. the bottom is solid and the maple is a 2 piece set that needs to be straighted before i can use it.

to get the 2 parts together and matching eachother perfectly i stick some sanding paper on a piece of old kitchentable and sand until it's good. but when i was satisfied, the next day the wood was bowed a little and the work from the previous day was all gone. :D

thats crappy cause i can sand like for ever. without result :/

does anyone here know some useful tips for getting it very straight? im really stuck here. B)

    thx! maarten..

  5. My old bassguitar sucks. So i started to take the better parts of it and use it for a new one i going to build. (pics as soon as i start working on it ;p )

I noticed 2 things: the body was made of triplex or something ugly like that. And the neck was made of maple and the scale palissander so that is very usable for having a MusicMan-style sound.

The thing with MM-pickups is that they don't sell them without the guitar :D

and the key to the fat wall of bass that stingray gives is the active pickup with f/a-polepieces.

Seymour and Bartolini do MM aftermarket pups but i wonder if they give the same or a better sound.. they are expensive so i want to hear some positive stuff before i get an extra job for them.

My uncle had let me play on his Stingray in combination with a large Trace Elliot.. There a few basses that give me the feeling i am getting a Thai massage when i slap the E-string around..

So anybody experienced the replacement pups( or someone to sell his stock MM gear.. ) ?

    B)

    Thx!

  6. Hahaha ok someone is probably been experimenting. I guess i don't like the whole sound. I rather have another, and since it was a free guitar (got it from my uncle =] ) i can do whatever i want with it. :D i think i'll put some extra pieces there and stuff..

    Thx!

  7. Hey there!

i have a worry about my bass pickups.

    picserver.jpeg

why are there only half the metal sticks :D

And should i add another eight of them and will it improve my sound? cuz right now it sounds like crap and the output is weak B)

it is a budget bassguitar, a Westone. Spectrum Series II

    Thx..

  8. The scale length influences the tension on the strings. (the longer the scale, the more tension you get. )So it affects alot of things but from what i know the scale length isnt more important than the choice of wood.

But if you put Gibson PAFs in a strat it will sound different (d0h)...

i think he had a mahogany strat :D

  9. :DB)

    @ Anathema

Lol that is a tuner.. it is probably for studio use or just to look cool.

The thing with racks is that it holds alot of possibilities. A little Boss pedal is like a rack only then build for the floor and ten times smaller. In a rack you have way more space to put electronic stuff in.

There are rack processors with alot of effects. You can control it with for example a floorboard.

19" is the standard size for soundmodules.

I have no experience with racks. but since noone else is responding... :D

I know they can be most expensive..

    [edit]

Lol little bit too late :D

  10. If you do go the Lawrence route, beware. ..

... My pickups are now on their way though.

Looking at Mr Lawrence, his beard tells me he isn't into heavy metal. This, being accentuated by his beard, and accompanied by your experience, makes me go for Duncans.

    picserver.jpeg

Thx for your story btw :D

  11. That all sounds very promising.

I like the Pantera sound much for beeing so clear and tight. But the sound is not as thick as Hetfields sound.

First i looked for EMG's because Mr. Hetfield seduces everyone with his sound especially from the black album. But they are a little expensive i think, and someone told me i don't feel the difference between EMG's or Duncun's wich cost half the money :D .

One last question: what is in your opinion the best neck-pickup to use with de Dimebuck0r?

    Thx everyone :D:DB)

  12. The Dimebucker doesnt have metal sticks in it. Instead it uses 2 metal strips.

    sh-13.jpg

What exactly is the advantage or disadvantage of this?

It seems more logical to me to make a stick for every string, because, you get more sound from the string you hit...

    SH-2.jpg

..and the magnets power goes out to that string and not to what lies between 2 strings...

    picserver.jpeg

It is more aimed at the string and stuff..

    B) Or something.. :D

I do not play as tight as Mr. Dimebag, so i don't want the pickup picking up more scratches and fuzzyness then strickly necessary =]
