  1. I do have access to a planer so that shouldnt be a problem. anyway I need to know if the holes that I drill in the back of the body for a standard strat with a solid bridge has to be in terms of drill bit size cause I dont want to drill it too big or i ruin the entire project and that is a big problem. i am using basswood for the body, maple for the neck and rose wood for the finger board. i shall post pics in a few weeks
  2. Im looking into pickups for my Stratocaster that I am building, woohoo gonna be in the woodshop at school next week so im gonna start building. The layout is ready thanks too my squier which was a birthday present. Anyway I was thinking about pickups and i was going to put either Vintage noiseless Strat pickups, Texas Specials or Seymour Duncan Lipstick Tube pickups. I want the noiseless ones cause feedback is a pain in the butt but i like playing blues but also I love the sounds of the lipstick tube pickups. I dont know which to get or is there a good combo of all 3 that I could get
  3. was the bridge originally a trem or was it a solid hard tail bridge? if it was a hard tail bridge you would have to route a cavitiy for it, other wise putting the bridge on is going to be a bit of a pain. here is what I would probably do. run a set of strings through the back of the guitar then take the trem bridge and slide the strings through it. then wind all the strings down if the tuners are still on the headstock and then straighten the trem bridge so it is in line with the strings then mark the screw holes with a pencil by just filling the holes with a dot where the screw holes are suppose to be. then remove the strings and bridge and then drill a small hole in each of the marks for the screws. then place the bridge on and screw the bridge in place. that should work although im no professional lutheir but thats most likely what I would do in your situation.
  4. I am going to be buying some wood for a guitar body and neck. how should it be cut, I was told the wood should be quarter sawn for the neck but what about the body and should the wood be rough cut as well. Also what is the size of the bit that I need to drill string holes for a non tremolo bridge so that the strings slide in the holes and will come out the bridge without any problems of getting jammed or being too loose. One final thing, what size bit should I use for routing the single coil pickups and neck cavaties. I am building a Strat with non tremolo bridge and basswood body as well as probably a mohogany neck and maple or rose wood fretboard
  5. well i have finally gotten around to building my own strat. evidently my parents got me a squier strat so I am using the body to make a template. anywho I need to know what the scale length of the fretboard would be on a 24 fret strat cause mine has 22 and i dont know the extra length. also should I make the pickup setup a Single coil in the bridge Humbucker in the middle and a single in the neck or should it be single in the neck and 2 Humbuckers in bridge and middle slots?
  6. i have a classical guitar and it sits collecting dust now cause i cant sit with it and be comfortable to be honest. i know some ppl who have had rough times trying to practise with a flying v and they say its too hard to do for them
  7. that is some nice wood. if you were going to build the actual guitar with it, it wont be too heavy to work with but it would damage easier im guessing. im using maple for the neck on mine and a mohogany body.
  8. yea i got it in jpeg format so that should not be a problem. im thinkin the flying v design seems stupid cause its a guitar that i cant sit with a practise like i normally do. im thinkin of using the SG design from guitar build is what i will make. Is there going to be any difference in the paper size or should i just use the same size? thanks again. rules at hockey and dingos from eat babies j/k but seriously we rule at hockey
  9. thanks MzI but i live in and there is no place called kinkos lol. could they do it at staples by any chance? i will take the file in and see if they can expand the image.
  10. hello all. i have this Sigma acoustic by Martin that I have been playin on for a while and my dad bought it a long time ago. i am almost 18 and im assuming my dad bought it b4 i was born. its a DM-3Y model. anyway does anyone have info on these guitars and how much they are worht. im just curious.
  11. hi everyone. i know i been postin on here for a little while now but i want to introduce myself. i have been researching guitar building for a while and asking questions on the site. anyway i have lots of wood working experience from courses at school. so im hoping to get a project underway soon. I just need some wood but first i need to get the designs into a lifesize format. i want to do as much of the building process at home but alas im limited in tools. i should be able to do it at school though if i cant do it here. does anyone have any tips or getting a design from the computer into a lifesize printer with a 8 1/2 by 11 printer. I am using the Volo View program and i would like to know how it works printing wise.
  12. alrighty. i got the program from guitar build and i have the plans. now if i were to print out the image would it print it as a life size model or do I have to blow it up some how and if so how do i do it
  13. well i have the one that someone posted on this forum a while back and its not to scale or am i just size blind. cause when i printed it, it fit on several 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper but is way to small. I dont know how to enlarge the picture so I can crop it so that each section would fit on a piece of paper and I could cut them out an place them together on some board or some thing to use to make the template. it is from guitar build i think but it sure seems small to me. what should I do cause im all out of ideas
  14. ok thanks to one of the other topics i am now starting a flying v project. now i used the diagrams from guitarbuild on the other post but i got a question. how wide across are the wings from one point straight over to the other point. i need to know so I can blow up the image which I have cropped into sections to blow up. also what is the scale of the neck in length. thanks
  15. i want a layout of the guitar that i can print and cut it out to trace on to a piece of bristol board to use as a template. or just the full dimensions of the guitar itself
  16. use a wood fill to fix chips and any major dents. thats what i did to fix my wood projects at home after the dog chewed them.
  17. does anyone here have a diagram with the dimensions for a 3 single coil Fender Strat. I been lookin high and low over the net for one and i cant find a thing
  18. is there one available for a strat cause what MKGBass made is exactly what I need to make a body template. all i need is measurements
  19. ya there is a way but its a lot more tedious cause it can be done with a electric sander if u know how to do it. there are router bit out there that u can use to round the edges. a local hardware store should carry them. just tell them that you need a bit that rounds edges on wood
  20. hello everyone im new. i am starting a fender strat guitar project but im stuck already. I am making a 3 single coil strat with 1 volume and 2 tone pots. now i am at the planning stage but i cant find anywhere a diagram of a strat that I can print out and use to trace onto a piece of wood to use as a template. could someone please tell me where i can find something to use for the planning stage of my project. all the tools are available but I cant figure out how to set up a template for the body
