Hey...I'm kinda late to the thread...but anyway. This is the gun that I have been using with the exact same compressor you have.

It's a small gun but it holds plenty of finish for a coat or two on a guitar body. I have seen this gun on sale for as little a $6.99.

Have you glued the neck into your guitar yet? If not, don't until you are done finishing....especially if you are going to use a different finish on neck vs the body. Just mask the gluing surfaces while you apply your finish.

You should be able to grain fill right over the sealer. Unless there is so much sealer on there that the grain is already leveled.

I would think if you can't pry it out with your fingernail, you have it plenty tight enough. You don't want it too tight. Otherwise you could crack your finish when you press them in.

I have read the Ash can be very blotchy if you try to dye the wood directly. If you tint your clear you avoid the blotchiness.

Unless you want to wipe dye directly on the ash, (which I've read doesn't work our very well with ash)the sealer shouldn't be a problem. You should see if you can find out what kind of sealer MM is using, and if there are any compatibility issues with the finish you want to use. If there are not compatibility issues...just leave the sealer...it can be a real pain to sand off. You should be able to grainfill right over the sealer. This should highlight your grain. Then add some black Color tone or Transtint dye to your clearcoat...this will give you the black tint. Once you have the shade of black tint you want, swithch to straight clear to finish building your finish.

I get into work at about 5 am EST Mon - Sat (most weeks) and there are always spam posts to report....I would be willing to delete some of this crap. That is if there is not a readily available software solution. It would be even better it we could stop it from ever happening.

Hey thanks, I created the burst by wiping on dye. The yellow is an aniline dye powder from LMII, mixed with water. The red is a cherry red Color Tone dye from Stewmac, also mixed with water. Someone posted a link to a video from Fine Wood Working about creating a sunburst with dye. I pretty much followed that process and then I just sprayed clear lacquer over it. If I can dig up that link I will post it.

Hey, I started finishing this guitar. The top is dyed and I have a couple coats of clear on. Now that everything is sealed I am going to spray the alder back red. That is if the weather cooperates. Anyway here it is

Hey Joel, Check out this video once. This guy is just using dye to make his burst, but you may be able to use some of his blending technique to get a burst you like better. Or if you aren't totally set on doing this with just shellac you could try the dye.

Hey Avenger...don't get dragged down in this attitude around here that you have to have made 300 perfect guitars and be able to charge 3 grand a piece for them before you dare sell any of your work. If you are up front and honest about exactly what you are selling, and you are happy with the price your pieces will bring...then more power to ya! It's not like you are taking on commissions that you are not qualified to do, and getting the money up front.

that fretboard is killer! Love it.

If you are really that worried about it...bring it to a machine shop and have it specially ground. It shouldn't be a big deal to have it ground flat to +/- .0003. Although lets be real. We are measuring an instrument made of wood that will vary its shape way beyond that tolerance just with the changing of the seasons.

I am planning to finish the neck of my latest guitar with tru-oil, and the body with nitro. I was wondering how I should mask the part of the neck that will be glued into the body. Can I just use regular blue masking tape? Will the oil seep under it and mess up my glue joint?

They were all great builds! The standard around here is getting incredibly high. That said..the Sorbera guitar grabbed my vote this month.

I got the bridge pin holes, string through holes and the control holes all drilled in this weekend. I also had to route the control cavity a little deeper so the pot and the switch would be deep enough. I also cut the control cavity recesses. Should be ready to finish by the 4th of July weekend!
