finish the electric mandolin thats been being built for ohhh about 2 years now.

The strat and deville basically give me all the tones I want, everything after that is just indulging myself, mostly I want some kind of good acoustic.

my strat has the s-1 switching and I really like it. mines a H/S/S though. adds alot more variety to the type of tone you can get. one thing I wish it did is split the humbucker and just use one coil at the bridge spot with the button in. as is bridge position for the switch is the same regardless of the button.

Next year I'm going to the University of Alberta, Engineering.

I know here 81's and 85's go for around 120 a shot and the 89 I bought was 140 but I'm not sure about the sets

I mostly play my strat. I'm really glad I went with the american deluxe H/s/s rather than the standard. the "S-1" switching is awesome. one thing I find odd though is that on both settings the bridge/down selection is the full humbucker, would've been nice to have one just a split coil.

I play a surprising amount on my martin backpacker, while not as loud as some of the other travel guitars i've played it's great to take anywhere.

i went on saturday and again today to long and mcquade (guitar store) and was tying out amps. the salesperson seemed to be in love with traynor amps so i tried a bunch of those as well but in the end I bought a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2x12". I love it! It's my first tube amp and It's made a convert out of me.

I've been looking around for a while for a new amp. right now I use an old ibanez GX 40B bass amp which, well, fails to inspire. its pretty un reliable and cuts out and goes all "scratchy" previously whenever I giged it was with school and I used a micked peavey, some kind of bandit. my requirements for a new amp were allish tube, good clean, and enough power that I wouldn't have to worry about it. I was also leaning towards a minimum of 2 12" speakers but I don't really have any reason for it. I mostly just play in my room but do gig and jam a bit. reason I'm posting is because the reviews I've read about the hot rod deluxe are either people love it and say it rocks or they say it's a piece of garbage save your money. I was looking for opinions/experiences with this amp and whatever other advice you could give. thanks

I've got an LSR too and love it. I never have tuning problems.

so I got my bandsaw back today. yay! and I got some curly maple for the top. I got two bookmatched sets. still need to joint them and decide which set I'm going to use. one's got pretty good figure (imho), and the other is more lightly figured. so it should be getting under way pretty fast here.

now what would be cool is to have it motorized so when you flick to say bridge position on a three way the pickup move to the bridge, but you'd need some kind of way to set how close to the bridge you'd want it

that would work but I'd be worried about string tension un bending the "claws". also thinking about it, using a claw instead of screws would make the rear cavity bigger, not sure how I feel about that.

the general plan now is ash body with a curly maple top, rear routed, string through, since i'm going for string through I can change the rear cut out so the middle isn't so flat. or should I leave it flattened? also what I think I want for the top is a white-black burst stain then sand back and blue stain but I'm not entirely sure how this would work/look.

won't be able to really get this rolling for about a month, as I broke my band saw so it's in for warranty repair for a month. so I'll be working on finishing the neck and building templates and whatever I can without the band saw. this also gives me time to pick up the rest of the parts I need. think positive, think positive

for the string through do you need ferules on the top? also if you're rear routing the body, how much thickness do you need to leave in the top for the mounting screws? also how different is the route for the humbucker? I would assume it's basically the same until you have to route the, for lack of a better word, opening on the top.

I don't think there is enough claws, a mandolin has 8 strings, aren't there only 5 claws? I think putting more than one string on each claw would be a bad thing, especially come time to change strings. but something like that would be ideal.

I like the Idea of rear routing it. i was thinking about making it string through but mandolins use loop end strings so i was thinking maybe doing something like this.

i would like to have the electronics, one volume-push-pull pot from humbucker to single coil, one tone, one switch 9v-18v, one switch fiber optic fret markers also some kind of signal boost for the single coil. i would like to put in a battery box for two 9v batteries. does anyone know a local source for them? like if some chain carries them. thanks

can you just use a bigger screw?

this is an old Quest Atak 1 guitar I bought off my uncle who bought at a pawn shop for $60CDN. it was originally black with a humbucker at the bridge and single at the neck. also it had the output jack on the pickguard. I stripped the paint off with a RO sander and heat gun. I then tried to sand it as best I could to get rid of the innumerable dents and gouges in the wood. I also routed out a humbucker cavity at the bridge and drilled a hole for the output jack on the back edge. I then made a new pickguard and trem cavity cover from some clear plastic I had lying around. I sprayed the body with duplicoulor metalcast red and used mastercraft automotive clear coat. the pickups are hand-me-downs from my dads friends LP. I decoupage the pickguard and trem cover with some stormwatch comic book my uncle gave me. this project cost me so far $80CND but I would like to put schaller straplocks on it and the knobs on it now are temporary until I can buy some LP style black knobs.

ok I've been working on re-doing the neck and while thats been going on I was stupid enough to leave the body just lying around my room. after being bumped about a bit the finish has taken quite a beeting. I think it is because it's made of spruce. so partly because of that and partly because of what everyone has said I've decided to re-do the body. heres the plan so far

am I the only one that feels a law that to carry small amounts of wood requires apermit bad? doesn't that mean you need a permit to carry "specialty wood" from the lumber yard to your shop??? I think I must have read it wrong because if that is true it's horrible

I've done multi colored pickguards on the back of clear plastic. I did a set of pickguard and cavity covers in a space theme for a guitar at scholl this way. you just have to think it out before hand. not just go nuts like I usually do when painting something. the blue meanie painted on the cavity cover of my mandolin was done that way too. if you're interested:
