Hi, my local wood guy has Eastern maple and Big Leaf maple. I assume that the Big Leaf isn't acceptable for a neck (using just a 2-way rod, no carbon fiber). I asked if the Eastern maple he had was 'Hard Rock', he didn't know.
Just wondering if all Eastern is Hard Rock?
Thanks again!

Wow SoapbarStrat, you are like the King of DIY! Looks like you adapt alot of things to make your own tools and jigs. Great job man!

Right on Perry!!!

No way man, that makes total sense, I never thought about that. I'm a newb too, hence the question

Does anyone sell them? Or is it one of those things where you can't fret a fingerboard untill it's on the neck blank?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Prost, is the neck pocket angled? Since you're using the TOM, you might want to look into that.
-
Ya, because even when the guitar isn't plugged in and you're playing, at least it'll feel good.
But then again, when it is plugged in, would the better sustain/sound compensate for the less than stellar neck????

Ok, so I've designed and cut out my body. But now I have a decision to make.
EMG Select pickup and Stew mac neck
OR
Dimarzio pup and $50 Saga type neck
Either choice would be about the same $$.
What would be your decision?
Go for good sound or better feel?
Are the Saga type necks really that bad?
Thanks in advace!

Finding this thread has been excellent
I'm going with the Stew-Mac neck!
Less$$ than Carvin and better quality than MM, by the sounds of it.
One thing though.
I'd like to get the paddle head but it seems different than the Strat/Tele replacement ones because the truss rod adjustment is in the heel as opposed to the head. Anyone know if this is a 'completely' different neck?
I'd really like to use my own design for the head stock.
Thanks!

Great advice everyone!
Does anyone have any experience with Mighty-Mite?

Thanks everyone!

Just enquiring to see if any of you have any experience with Warmoth necks for projects etc. carvin, Stew-Mac and Might Mite also sell them. Which would be the best?

As far as routing an angled neck pocket, is there a secret to this? COuld you just cut a very thin 'wedge' shim and glue it to the bottom of the neck pocket?
-
Cool, thanks!
So I guess there isn't a 'standard' set measurement? I should be ok with maybe a bit less than a 1/4"?

Hi everyone, first time poster here!
I was just wondering something. When calculating the bridge position for a tune-o-matic type, I can't find anything explaining the 'angle' of the low E side?
The calculations for the bridge based on the scale and position of the 12th fret make sense to me, but why on a Les Paul for instance, is the low E post always a bit further away? Should I be concerned about this? I'm about to cut my first blank.
thanks!
All 'eastern' Maple Hard Rock?

Thanks everyone, I would be using a mahogany or purpleheart 1/4"-1/3" center piece for the neck. With a two way truss, would the 'other' maple (he just calls it 'eastern'), not the big leaf, be alright for the outside (1" or so) 2 strips of the neck?
