  1. Cool erik, thanks. Those were some of the things I was thinking too. Like if you did it that way, there would be less to plane off of the back (fig 3) . I was thinking of just angling down the front neck pickup area of the body blank on a table saw (Fig 2), thus not needing to plane.

I've always been confused by planing down and leveling a neck through done like Fig 1. I get the theory behind it but figure you'd always be left with a carved top style or like a dip where the neck pickup would sit? Unless like you said, put it through a planer, which I don't have access to. :D

  2. I was thinking about an airbrush and that way I could get a small compressor (I live in an apartment). So, doing a whole body, do you find that the airbrush is adequate or would you need a spray gun if you're going to use Createx??? Also, have you found the metal flake in Canada????

  3. LOL! No, I just wanted to verify if what he's describing in that post is that he cuts out the neck through blank with the neck portion already at an angle, so he doesn't need to angle the wings at all?

Sorry man, I've only been speaking english since I was about 1 1/2 or 2 years old and my 'rocker' phase severely clouded my brain, so I still have trouble explaining myself B):D

  4. Thanks tons Myka, I think I'll stick with the rasp for a while more anyway. Great idea for the copy carver link too!

Oh, I didn't mean using the Router base freehand, I meant the board that the neck is clamped onto. Does that board run along a straightedge or something or do you just move the board itself freehand. I can see that you'd have to move it left and right, the length of the neck but does it move against a fence or something? OR does the flush bearing basically make sure you don't stray.

    Thanks again!

  5. I was pouring over my Stew Mac catalog and was trying to figure out what tools I could buy from the hardware store instead of the 'specialized only for guitar' tools they have (ya, trying to save some money! :D )

I realize that you shouldn't scrimp on certain things but surely some could be bought locally for alot less.

    I'm thinking mainly fretting tools:

    Fret hammer - ?

Straight edge - wouldn't a really good steel ruler do?

Fret cleaning tool - couldn't you just use a thick blade or thin screwdriver?

Fret leveling file - gotta be something else?

Fret cutter - this one you might have to buy unless you have access to a grinder?

Fret Crowning files - These don't look too specialized?

If I had the money, it'd be nice to buy all this. I also realize some things ARE guitar specific.

  6. Cud, you are the Jig King!

I'm wondering if I can use my router (mounted like your spindle sander) for a spindle sander, or if it would be too fast??

Anyway, I really dig your tutorial, great pics and nice work too!

It's so cool how you can get inspired by others here huh?
