  1. I've read about GFS's...at HarmonyCentral & elsewhere.

    Thus far everyone: Likes Em.

(Especially their "vintage staggered (oversized)" Fender-Copy pups/ BUT/ are made in a Regular Ol' Humbucking Size).

Btw, what-I've-read has no "links" to trying-to-sell these items, as far as I can tell....

On eBay one seller has "GFS" (brand) Humbuckers that are styled after the old Tele-Custom Neck Pup...and/or the '72 Thinline (Pups). They've got the olde "vintage staggered" pole-pieces but ARE NOT the Big Ol' Huge Fender Pups.

    Iow, they're standard Humbucking-size.

All reviews I've read of these are "excellent" (as well).

Btw, Warmoth has (just) this "giant" Fender Neck-Pup....for $95.

Hmmm...you & I are onto a Very Similar Project. And, well, there are many (many) options one could take.

One primary thing to consider is: What Neck? (in terms of the nut & heel width). The nut-width is more important, in one sense, as it will be Lined-Up with whatever bridge you choose. Iow, the nut's space and the bridge's (string) space are gonna give you: What The Pups Have To Line-Up With, right?

I've bought a Tele-style-neck (unfortunately, it's a Mighty Mite/ but too late now) that's 1 & 11/16ths nut-size. (Since my fingers are relatively short/ though my palms are big/ I opted for this narrower nut-size). This, btw, matches Gibson nuts (their standard nut width).

    Gibson Tune-O-Matic bridges are 2 & 1/16th wide.

So I/we(?) have a couple options for: What Type Bridge(?).

StewMac sells "Hipshot" Hard-tails (heavy-brass designed, Strat/ 1972 Tele "thinline" compatible) for $44, I think.

    Warmoth has "Standard" Tele Bridges---just like a regular Tele's but made for a Humbucker---with 2 & 1/16th" spacing (52.4mm) for $37.

Warmoth also can cut you a pickguard to size for this particular bridge (3 & 5/8ths wide @ bridge, as opposed to the regular 3 & 3/8ths)... and also make a Humbucking routing for the Neck pup.

So if ya want a pickguard, Warmoth would prolly be the way to go.

But you asked about "recommended" Humbuckers for Tele.

Here I've opted for a set of (matched) "Kent Armstrong" P-90's. They're NOT regular P-90's but "Humbucking-Size P-90's)---single coils---and are equally matched (@ 8 ohms) both having a 2" pole-piece spacing...which I've found will work with my other Gibson-Specs, so to speak. I researeched these and everyone who has got em, likes em (a lot). The Neck Pups is reverse wound to reduce hum when used with the Bridge Pup. And they're being "matched" as far as ohms/output goes....I dunno about you but; I kinda Don't Like That when you select the Bridge position and ya sudddenly get that "hotter/louder" thang. Why I chose these, among their excellent sound from all I've read.

I'm prolly gonna go with the Hipshot/ hard tail and make my own pup-rings from "electrical outlet plates" (that go around outlets & the turn-on/off switch). Here I have options of using: plastic, wood or metal.

    Lemme know what ya think.

Maybe we can work-together on out Tele-Proj?

  4. PS

If I understood the seller's description---and have "eyeballed" the body pic right---the neck (heel), pup-routes and trem-route are "in line" with one another. They're just off-center to the body itself.

Of course, this is less than ideal.

I'm assuming that if I install the bridge & pups "square"...that I shouldn't have any negligable problems.

As far as pup-rings go; I can easily make some (believe it or not) using: "wall-mount plates" which are normally used for an electrical outlet. Using this option, I can make em metal, plastic or wood and size them accordingly. An untried "mod", mind you....

  5. and the neck I just got (ordered):

    e1_1_b.JPG

So what I have thus far is:

    --a Basswood LP-style body that's off-center-routed ($20)

    --an LP-scaled neck (24 & 3/4")...in "near mint condition" ($75)

Thus, the problem of scale-length is solved. Or no need to "scale-it" for Fender or to have to use a Fender neck.

And, yes, I would/will fill the pup-routes (if necessary).

And the Trem-Route---it's gonna get filled (regardless).

    Q:

    How should I plug it?

    With one huge formed plug?

Or (certainly not)...with some kind of putty/wood filler? (I don't think so)....

As far as the Oblonged-End goes (down where the controls will be) I could shape it to have a Mustang-ish "oblong", no?

[No offense to any "purists", mind you],

  6. PS-

I realize that this might be: a "Huh????"

    OK

    The luthier's errors weren't so "off" that a custom-made p/guard (or pup-rings) wouldn't Compensate-For.

So you can see that this is (truly) an Experimental-Build, so to speak.

    For $20, I can't go wrong.

    (it's "bonfire" season)....

  7. I just bought a Les Paul style body from eBay....a "luthier's mistake" (for 20 bucks).

Though I already have most of the parts & plans for a Tele-Copy going; and have only "made" a Carvin-Bolt-On Strat Copy (before): Tell me what you Think about my latest brainstorm.

The "hitch" (on this ebay LP body) is that the Pup-Routes were slighly off-center. Slightly-enuf to be Major....

    So.

This body will accept Strat-style necks, though I was unsure (uninformed) of the Scale-Length and other technicalities.

However, I have a couple Spare-Necks here and am considering just using this LP-Body, setting-things-up to Fender (25 & a half inch) Specs.

In fact, I may use a Tele-Humbucking-Bridge and route it for a Tele-Control-Plate!!! (No control-routings have been done).

The pups may well be: a matched-set of Kent Armstrong "P-90's" (single coils/ humbucking size)...that I have sitting around here, resonating nothing.

    I dunno.

    Whatta ya think?

  8. Hey Moog.

    I'm a Newbie here too.

'm looking to take the sorry excuses for machineheads off my Fender Standard Tele and put on some Gotoh or Grover ones. Now the Fender ones have these annoying studs which hold the tuners in place instead of a screw hole. If I replace them, I will need to drill some new screw holes for the new tuners, but should I fill in the old stud holes? If so, what is the best way to do it?

Just (exactly) what is wrong with yer tuners?

The "inside pins" (the "studs" as you called them); there's nothing superior/inferior---as far as I know---to whichever type of machineheads you have & use.

Iow, the job of machineheads (or tuners) is to secure the strings/ tune the guitar. I suspect that you may need to tighten the screw(s) that are on "top" of the offending knob(s) of whatever offending "string."

    Does that make sense?

Put another way, those screws adjust the tension-applied to the gear of each tuner. If they're (too) loose or tight; yer gonna have tuning-problems. Experiement & Test them before you consider anything else, imo.

Also, if you were to just up & get new tuners, Ummmmm, Why?

If I'm not mistaken, Gotohs &/or Grovers would require a 10 mm hole, which would mean you would have to "route-out" the existing Fender holes (@ 3/8"). Plus, you'd have to correctly-align each (new) tuner and do that Exact Drilling for the new holes, required.

Methinks you just need to do some adjusting on the "tightness" of yer existing machinehead/tuners and see how: That Goes.....

    Hope that helps.

    ps- if not lemme know

  9. Greetings,

"Rick" (here)... I found this website while surfing Google for: Info Regarding a "Project Tele-Copy" that I've been planning on doing for several years & am just now getting around to it. My only experience in "building" (as it were) was: I "made" a Carvin Bolt-On Kit about 4 years ago. Presently for this Tele-Project, I'm getting various parts from several sources (including eBay) and will probably needs lotsa advice. I may start a new thread for "convenience-sake"...on one of the other boards. Thanx for all yer help (in advance)!!!
