First of all, how do you ground a guitar with a tune-a-matic/string-thru bridge? I know on tremolo guitars, you ground the guitar with the claw. How does it work with a tune-a-matic? And second question, looking at all my guitars in the control cavities, theres a black kind of finish inside, what is it and can I get it at home depot or such?
EDIT: I did some searches, I did before I originally posted and got nothing but somehow I got results after trying again. I saw that you do not need to ground a tune-a-matic if you have an active EMG, which is the case for me, its a 7-string I've built, single EMG 81-7 and a t-o-m/string-thru and just a single volume control. And for the second part, I was kind of confused on shielding... what exactly do I need to do for sheilding the pickup cavity and control cavity? I am wanting to use shielding paint that I read about, so if I do, do I just paint the entire cavities and after so.. thats it? No other soldering or anything needed? I'm asking all these questions bcuz I'd rather be safe than sorry ya know what I mean? heh. I plan on doing this within the next 24 hours bcuz I'm pretty much done with the guitar except for that part, so let me know ASAP!! Thanks

Thanks all... basically I wasnt sure what was the best way to clamp it... to hold the pieces to the center piece while the glue drys see what im sayin? that was the whole point to my question. thanks, i get it know.
-
oh, its that simple? haha.. no sanding or anything? how many coats of satin laquer is enough?
-
I have a 'how to' question... I did a search and couldnt find anything, and its not in the tutorials on project guitar, so I am wondering, how do you glue the side parts of the body on to the center piece of wood for a neck-thru guitar?
Thanks,
~Mike

I'm starting my project this weekend, and I'm planning everything now. And right now I'm working on planning the finish, and I want to do a satin finish. I DID do a search on it and found lots of good stuff, but I want to be specific on exactly what I'm going for... hence this thread. Anyone know the Jackson SLSMG in the satin black finish? That is exactly the finish I want to do, so if anyone does know that guitar and anything about its finish, please tell me how I go about getting it like that. Of course, I should also mention the color I'm going for, basically I want to do a natural transparent color, but a dark orange/brown color with the satin finish I want that I mentioned above. So... lets hear it!
Thanks,
~Mike

i did a search.. you nailed it, its a rotary rasp! lol thanks, now i can get one.
-
idk.. cuz it looks like its just a rod but im guessing it has those small "scales" or however u call em, i just dont know what its called so thats why im asking, im planning a trip to home depot to pick up some needed things.

What is the drill bit being used in the pic for doing scallops/bevels and all that?
-
Wow, just as i read an email from some dude i came across this thread. Was like dejavu, wait, it IS.
Emailed back.

Oh! I remember going thru his website, his guitars are gorgeous! Ha, I may email him about my needs lol. Thanks for the links!
-
Otherwise, I would check out perry's site.. he's had some great examples of soloist type guitars as of late and does carved tops too.
Whats the site?

Also, any custom builder worth his salt would not put the Jackson logo on the headstock, so if it's a Jackson you want, get a Jackson.
Thats the good thing, I wouldnt mind if the headstock didnt have the Jackson logo. Only problem is I can't afford the USA COW Model. His Dinky models are affordable but thats the thing, they are Dinky's not Soloist's and the Dinky's are bolt-on's where as his USA's are neck-thru (which is what I want). So back to my origianl question, is there anyone who can make me a replica or w/e of Christian's guitar? (no mention of price though, I wanna keep that part out for now).
-
Basically, you saw the guitar I want replicated, Christian of Fear Factory's Jackson USA Custom Shop Soloist in a 7-String, and I want someone who could build one for me (price is nothing on this) I just need a guitar maker who will build it and have other things dicussed later on. Thanks

1049.99 doesnt seem right, being that its the USA Custom shop model I want. I already emailed the guys at Drum City/Guitar Land and the price for the USA models are over three grand. I can't afford that even if I sold my car! (My car is an '01 Nissan Altima) and yea, that guitar is probably worth more than my car. So thats why I seek someone to build me one exactly like it but for an affordable and reasonable price. Christian has a Jackson Dinky model signature based of the custom shop and its a bolt-on, I want a neck-thru so yea.
-
I thought so, just thought I'd mention... but still as long as its not like two thousand dollars, but I'd still like to find someone who could build one (not saying for under a thousand), I'd just like to find someone because I want it basically exactly like the Christian's Jackson's in the link (neck-thru especially).
-
How about a quick description as to what you are looking for. I think there are plenty of good builders around here. If price/budget is a consideration, you may want to give a little detail there also.
Peace, Rich
I was just thinking of doing that!
Well its very simple, I basically want a copy or replica (not sure what word to use) of Christian Olde Wolbers' Jackson USA Custom Shop Soloist Archtop 7-String, (or maybe even the V) specs and looks basically the same as is, nothing different...http://www.drumcityguitarland.com/inventor...D=14&BrandID=20 the bottom black one, if I could afford one I'd just buy one but they are extremely expensive so I thought maybe a custom builder could build me one for an affordable price, basically maybe for under a thousand but I could go that high.

got the websites for the guys you mentioned?
btw, sorry for posting in the wrong board, didnt realize

Does anyone know any good custom guitar makers (electric), who can make a custom... any shape and configuration I want? Thanks!

Wow nice attitudes for christ sake... let me explain something, being a member since last nov. has nothing to do with knowing the answer to my question and/or knowing how to finish a guitar. Another thing, so what if i dont know how YET, thats why i posted this question and thats what this "project guitar" forum IS FOR! and i have to learn to do this sometime, theres a first time for everything, apparently you dont know that otherwise your negative comments wouldnt of been said. i did a search now, but not finding those exact answers i asked for. AND, im sorry for posting in the wrong forum, i guess i didnt realize, so ill go post in the other. Have a good one, peace.

Ok so I'm curious to find out, how are guitars painted finished? Whats the process, what kind of paint is used? Type of base coat and clear coat finishes etc? Basically whats the whole process? And what good spray gun can do the job for both?
I'm sure this has been asked, but I'm kind of lazy and dont want to search thru the pages.. ha
Thank you ahead of time!

Thanks for the support!! fryovanni, yes, you basically do have what I'm goin for down. Thanks!!

I have built bodies from scratch not necks, which is why I AM doing my 'homework' for this project, like I said sometime before, you have to start somewhere, I'm not just going to start and just work from there, this is why I am posting, so I can get some answers... I understand when you say not to start with an 8-string, but I already have more than enough 6-strings, AND 7-strings.. and my dream guitar now is an 8-string, since I can't afford an LGM or anything, I figured I'd build my own... but like I said, I'm doing my homework and making sure I will have everything I need and I have all the measurements etc... This is impossible and hey, this could turn out to be successful (which I hope for), I'm keeping this positive, NOT negative... I want to be motivated to make this thing as high quality and professional looking as I can. I just don't want to be discouraged, but I really do appreciate the support and suggestions, just keep them coming!!

You mentioned two truss rods again. That may pose some problems. If you want a thin profile two truss rods will require more material on the back of that neck and limit how you shape that profile. I would't really think about two truss unless I was building a six string bass, and that is a much wider neck than you will have. Maybe reinforcing rods would do the trick? I have never built an an 8 string guitar neck so I am not speaking from experience, maybe they use 2 truss. I dunno.
Have fun dude.
I can ask Jeremy (LGM), unless he sees this and tells me here

Mahogany is actually only moderately strong as far as hardwoods go. Strength as we need it for this is measured by a figure called the "modulus of elasticity," and the higher it is, the more load is needed to deform the wood.
Using http://www.woodweb.com/Resources/wood_eng_handbook/Ch04.pdf as a reference, I pulled out numbers for everything they had that I've seen used in guitars:
Limba : 7,000 MPa
Alder : 9,500 MPa
Basswood : 10,100 MPa
Black Cherry : 10,300 MPa
Mahogany : 10,300 MPa
Black Oak : 11,300 MPa
Black Walnut : 11,600 MPa
White Ash : 12,000 MPa
Sapele : 12,500 MPa
Rock/Sugar Maple : 12,600 MPa
Brazilian Rosewood : 13,000 MPa
Live Oak : 13,700 MPa
Water Oak : 13,900 MPa
Pignut Hickory : 15,600 MPa
Purpleheart : 15,700 MPa
Bubinga : 17,100 MPa
So, with all those numbers, if you want a pretty thin neck that'll be able to stand up to a lot of strings and won't bend too much, a GREAT option would be Mahogany with some purpleheart or bubinga laminated in - they're exotic woods that everyone loves and that are very beautiful.
(For those who care, the modulus of elasticity E is defined such that (Load/Area of sample perpendicular to load)=E*(change in length under load/original length). While not actually a measure of strength under flexure (like a guitar neck), strength under flexure is directly related to strength under axial loading, and as such these numbers used purely as ratios of relative strength under axial or flexural load are still more or less valid.
I think I may have to add another guitar at the end of the list of guitars I'm going to build made out of hickory.
oo sweet, great advise there, gonna use that! Thanks man!
