  1. by how high or low he needs to go in the programming part, do you mean like the pickup pockets and such. Would that mean I would need to buy the pickups and stuff before programming or anything. I have plans from guitarplansunlimited, but don't know if they include the depts. I will have to check. I am building a LP, so would you have anything I could look at the see how deep I really need to go?
  2. OK, thanks for that link. Im not so worried about the actual CNC programing and actually seeing the drawing. My dad doesn't have a problem with the programming and drawing part, but he doesn't know anything about guitars, so he either has to download the file in 3D because he doesn't know about the pockets and stuff in a guitar. for an example, the jem file http://www.projectguitar.com/ref/adv/dwg.htm here, he could not open up at all. Does he have to do something special or what. Like I said before, he uses solidworks. Is there any other programs he could download for free in order to view it? thanks
  3. Hi guys, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I couldn't find anything in the search feature. OK, so my dad is an engineer, and has a CNC machine at work. I saw the guitar files on the projectguitar website, but when you tried opening them they were not in 3D. I also tried using the ones from a different website, I believe it was called guitarbuild.com or something. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me what is happening that they are not 3D images. He uses a program called solidworks for all of his drawings and stuff. If any of you know, are the files on the projectguitar website drawn to proportion, and have the correct measurements, or is it just an inaccurate drawing of what the guitar is supposed to look like?
  4. so what you're saying is that I should build a guitar without putting that much money into first so i'm confident for the next one. I can understand that. I'm planning on build a zakk wylde camo guitar so I don't have to buy an expensive piece of wood for the top. what would you recommend to put on top so I can carve it though, and where could I buy it? also, is there just any tips you have for me while building?
  5. OK, so I started playing guitar around 3 years ago, and my first guitar was a Mexican made strat, with this very cool looking flat navy blue finish. I learned to play on it, and is now my favorite guitar. I have now bought a Gibson SG, and a Marshall MG100DFX for my setup. After playing each for awhile, I decided I don't really like either much and am thinking about selling both. I am about to begin building a guitar with my father, who is an engineer. And also buying a traynor 50blue amp if I can get the money. Since this strat has become my favorite guitar, but still doesn't have the greatest "components" on it. I am looking to buy a new pickguard, new knobs, a new back plate, maybe some of those string saver saddles, pickups, and that's really all I can think of. I'm trying to make the guitar a lot better, so I almost feels like a whole new guitar. I was wondering however, where you would recommend getting all these things, (pickguards and knobs and stuff) for a good price. Lastly, I really need help on buying pickups. I play lots of blues, classic rock, and some heavy metal music. I don't really know where to buy them, or what kind to get. sorry for such a long post, and thanks for all the help you can give.
  6. Hi, I'm new to this forum and would just like to say it's a great place, very helpful to the people who are ambitious enough to build their own guitar. I got the idea to build my own guitar about a year ago, and bought Melvin Hiscock's how to build your own electric guitar and it taught me a lot. I bought a LP plan from guitar plans unlimited, and a mahogany body blank from warmoth. Now, since it is my first build, I have some questions I was hoping you could helping me answer. After reading about LP's, the main complaint i've heard about them is their weight. I was wondering if I could cut some fairly big pockets in the body to cut down on it, but at the same time not affect the sustain too much. Secondly, I was wondering where you would recommend buying a flame/curly maple cap for the guitar. I don't know if I should spend a lot of money and make it a great guitar, or spend less just in case I mess it up. My father is an engineer and owns a CNC machine at his work, and has other lathes and stuff, so I am better equipped for the job I suppose. I have a few more questions, but will wait for these to get answered first so I don't end up with a HUGE post. Also, do you have an other advice for me and my first build? thanks alot for any help you can give.
