i thought this was a politic-free forum! uh oh, broke a rule!!

nitro... idk about that.... tends to react with oils i hear

so is there a better alternative, i hear minwax polyurethane is pretty safe and doesnt tend to react with the undercoats as much as say... nitro... and it doesnt shrink as much... any input on this idea?

is there a harder more durable rattlecan finish that will work well with the enamel paints?

cool, i like those results, I'll probably use this stuff. I should have some progress pics up pretty soon, i got the base... design... done today... so now im gonna put a clear coat on, then do some more graphics and then put on the top coat.

Im painting sort of a side project right now for fun and I used an automotive duplicolor black for the back, and used oil based paints over top of that for some designs i did. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used duplicolor clearcoat and gotten good results. I would also like to know if there is another finish in a rattle can I can use for better results. Minwax poly seemed good to me last time, but im not sure how it will work with the oil based paints. Thanks

It looks like Oak to me, with a little bit of oil finish on it or somethin. The grain is pretty predominate in there like some oak ive seen

looking at it again, im not so sure, i have never seen meranti before, so i cant judge that

cutting the body would be the least of my worries if we couldnt use power tools

i wont be entering, frets arent gonna be hear in time for the end of the competition, so maybe some other time

i think the fretless rule should be lifted... i mean, GOTM doesnt have a fretless rule...

Your kinda missing the point of a cigar box guitar then... i mean... thats exactly what its supposed to be, a stick with strings on it. I mean seriously... its not that big of a deal, people will vote for the best one, its not like if someone enters a 2x4 with strings on it theyre going to win you know?

zendrix: im not sure if its a good idea to inlay with maple on ebony, i think when you radius sand that a lot of ebony will get into the maple and won't be able to clean out completely

I never really thought about that, the fretboard is actually coming pre-radiused, and i planned on making the maple level with an already radiused fretboard using a chisel, and then i would be doing minimal sanding, but ill test it out on scrap first to see what happens now that you say that. Maple is a close grained wood though, i would think there wouldnt be any pores for the ebony dust to really get into.

i think the fretless rule should be lifted... i mean, GOTM doesnt have a fretless rule... the people who vote on the finished product will decide whether the workmanship involved outweighs the fact that its fretless. I plan on making mine with frets, but i think lifting the fretless rule will get even more creative designs into the little shin dig.

Yeah they are the rage, i think it was on setch's website i saw a cigar box mandolin too. Bottom line, theyre cheap and fun to build, especially since i have all the parts, so why not you know?

ok heres the story, about a year ago i tried to repair an old mandolin with no success, i forgot about it until i was looking through my attick and i saw the pile of hardware. The pile include a functional set of 8 tuners, a floating bridge, and a chrome tailpiece. So tomorow i plan on stopping by the local cigar shop to see if they have any extra boxes lying around. Any suggestions as to which brand box? I'm thinkin, kahlua, davidoff, or maybe macanudo. This is supposed to be a fun project that im really looking forward to doing, and hopefully ill get a nice mandolin out of it. So wish me luck!

No. 1 has mine. I like the black better with the blue, guess its just preference though.

I have an epiphone strat with the same features, it was the first guitar i bought (and learned to play on). It also has an angled headstock and a scarf joint. Its a LOT heavier than a fender or squier strat. I know that has nothing to do with your problem with the neck, but i just figured id confirm the fact that epiphone has ripped off fender guitars too.
