I was considering buying a Guitar Blue Book but I'm not sure if this particular one would be worthwhile. It was published in 1996, don't ya think values might have changed by now? I'll keep looking but if anyone has anything more up to date I'd be interested.

I have a subscription to the online version. It's up to date and pretty accurate price wise, but it does have some issues that should be addressed, like it doesn't understand the differences between and ibanez S470 made in 2002 and one made in 2003 as far as price goes, even though equipment changed in those years.

I'm getting really frustrated lately with my playing. When I play high gain stuff, even with my noise suppressor, I'm hearing lots of noise when I play. I'm not talking about hiss either. For instance, last night I was running through some legato exercises and getting my speed up playing scales and modes, and I could hear strings vibrating that I wasn't playing on. I'm assuming this is a technique issue, but I have no idea how to fix this. Any tips on how to fix this?

When I play clean, you don't hear any of this stuff at all. I'm just at a loss.

On edit: could this be caused by the trem springs? Someone mentioned to me once that he used foam in the trem cavity behind the springs to stop them from making noise.

Yes and no. Some guitars continue to go up in price. Take the upswing in values of the Ibanez lawsuit guitars over the last 2 years. Heck, even the late 80's RG's and S guitars are swinging up in price now, even on ebay. It all depends on what you have and what you want, but as a rule, gear less than 5 years old that is going to take a decent hit, especially the high dollar stuff without a huge following. A $1500 Gibson or Fender is going to hold more of its value than a $1500 Jackson in the short term because there's just a larger pool of perspective buyers.

You can buy a Jackson USA for $1600 at guitar center,then try to sell it back to them 3 months later and all they will offer is $500.(true story)They say it's because of Ebay,but regardless,guitar center can suck it.In my opinion,if they can only give back $500 for it,then they should have sold it to me brand new for under $1000.

Ouch. We're not all bad. I'm completely honest about what I have, and my prices are more than fair, especially since I sell mostly via auction or my local craigslist. When I part out a guitar, I charge less than Ibanez or even Rich at Ibanezrules.com wants for the part. I'm usually the cheapest seller on ebay as well. The key is finding good deals. For instance, I had someone contact me about buying their S7420 with Ibanez Universe case. He wanted nearly what the case was worth, so I bought it, and the guitar is in near mint condition. I'll sell both of them for about 3-4 times what I paid for them, even at ebay prices, should I choose to sell them (I'm kinda partial to the blue of the flamed maple top, as it's the same color as my daughter's eyes and was made the year she was born).

But I do agree. There are some guys that are just worthless, but there are also good people like Ashley (Ashbass on ebay) or Chris at Chrisguitars.com (though that guy NEVER answers his e-mail).

Now: Pod XT Pro to a Mesa/Boogie Stereo 2:50 power amp and two separate 1x12 Rocktron Velocity cabs. Well, actually I just sold off the cabs and I'm in the process of selling the Mesa power amp. I have no idea what I'm going to do. I'd like to go back to the 5150 combo, but I sold it 9 months ago to buy the Mesa. I'm thinking I may also ditch the POD XT Pro and save up for a Hughes and Kettner Triamp and go back to pedals. The POD is nice, but I'm still having a hard time getting the tones I want.

Edit: Would something like StewMac's Naptha Solvent be worth a shot at this point?

Yes, or even the Naptha in lighter fluid or rubbing alcohol to try and break up the oil that is causing the spots.

RGGR, you wouldn't happen the ability to create a 540PII template, would you?

I could stitch couple of A4 pieces of paper together, take sharpie to my 540Pii and copy you the "near' exact shape. Then you can cut out this shape and copy this to piece of 6mm MFD and have create your own template. If you PM me your address info then I could send you the papers in the mail.

Making MDF template myself would be no problem.....but it's more of a pain in the butt and sending it would be more of a hassle. Are you aiming of the shape of the 540Pii, or do you want a completed template???

Well, I won't lie when I say that I've always loved the 540Pii. I was a huge Testament/Alex Skolnick fan back in the day, and I remember him playing one on Headbanger's Ball in the 80's. I was in love instantly. I'd love to make one that's as close to the original as possible, but I wouldn't mind it being slightly off. my only problem has been that I've never seen a good picture of one completely full on from the front. The head builder at the Ibanez US Custom shop recently built a prototype necktrhough 540Pii and posted picks on Jemsite. Some of us are hoping it shows up next year as a re-issue like this years 20th RG's.

I'm thinking of doing a 7 string Maxxas version of 540Pii.

27" seems to be the most common baritone scale, but 28-5/8" also seems to be popular. Here's a fret scale calculator that will allow you to input the scale length and frets, and it will give you the location.

Some people have more time & skill than money. And if you actually enjoy repairing guitars, it's even better.

if continuity is all you need, then a flashlight bulb and a AA 1.5volt battery and some wire will do that. just put it all in series, and have 2 leads. I think you know what I mean

Hey Mike! Yep, that's how I've done it in a pinch as well, though I use christmas tree lights since I have so damn many of them.

Harbor freight (this name alway comes up) sells meters for under $20 which will work fine for checking your work. Mostly you will be checking wiring from point A to point B to see if everything is connected properly (continuity). I like meters that buzz when you have continuity, ooh baby. Most meters will have everything you will ever neeed to work on standard guitar wiring. Plus its good for checking outlets in your shop.

Yep, that's a NAMM guitar from last year, and is available as a Jackson custom shop model, though they were making them back in the 80's before Ibanez built the 540PII. That guitar actually sold on ebay, though I forget how much it went for.

That mahogany is beautiful! Excellent choice on natural finish. If you had to guess, about how much do you think it weighs? I know my RG520QS is a heavyweight.

My friends band played in Houston last weekend and their Van, trailer and all their equipment was stolen.

I buy gear out of there all the time and up here in Big D. What was stolen? I'll keep an eye out for it. I hate thieves.

If it where me, I would de-solder it from the pot. The less joins the better.

Anyways, I'm looking for a decently cheap pair of humbuckers (large, not single coil size) that have a great rock tone with a good distortion. I cant stand my current (stock) pickups, no tone at all.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for 100usd or less for trhe pair, perferably less.

Well, I know the guys at guitarpartsdepot.com have ESP replacement parts, so they might be able to get it for you. I looked in what parts they had listed online, and those covers weren't in there, but if they can be purchased, I'd bet they could get them.
