  1. hey craig thanks for the kind words , that fret board was really cool. i am thinking of doing a long celtic knot on a fret board maybe the serpent knot. but it will be very hard but! im up for the chalenge. rye
  2. boy you got me depressed a couple of days ago i posted some of my first inlays, and they are nothing compared to yours! good job! i cant wait to see the completed project.
  3. hey brian accualy i did the headstock inlays and the sun inlay on the body before i finished it (it was stripped down ) it accualy had a really cool bookmatched swamp ash vennered top but the venneer was very very thin so when i was sanding it itsanded through the top venneer wich was a bummer cuase i was gonna do a trans. finish on it. but on the inlays that i do to already finished guitars i use painters tape(its usualy blue and sold at home depot) that stuff doesnt leave any sticky residue after wards. i just place it around the area that the dremel router base would ride on . most of the inlay work i do by hand with the dremel but for removing the mass of material inside of my inlay lines i use a dremel router base that i attached a clear plexy glass bottom to becuase they only come with a round edge and that is not good enough to work with.
  4. thanks guys so far ive only done four totaly and i love doing them so whenever i have a freind who buys an old guitar i always try to talk him into letting me inlay it with something,so far it worked twice.the first two are my own though. hey wes actually the les paul was built by vantage so thats why i was surprised to see that it was mahogany! i thought for sure it would've been somethin else,so did myfreind who sold it to me boy was he bumbed when i told him what it was.haha but it sounds as good as any real les paul! and plays just as great! thanks for the kind words guys it realy helps me want to persue guitar building as a career. i gotta get out of my contsruction job its killin me! rye
  5. this is my first one it was an old vantage les paul that i stripped all the paint of to find out that it was all mahogany! the headstock had been broken off and the switch was moved so i vennered ebony on the headstock and did an inlay over the old switch hole. it was my first finish job and man do i hate finishing a guitar! http://imageserv.futurecube.net/uploads/04...LPheadstock.jpg http://imageserv.futurecube.net/uploads/04....03/lepside.jpg http://imageserv.futurecube.net/uploads/04...ackmopflame.jpg this last one is a pbass that i refinished this is the carvin headstock that i designed for it. like i said before these are my first inlays and finishing projects so please be gentle with your criticsms thanks rye
  6. hey this is what i did for my angled neck jig (but i am new at this so there might be a better way) i am biulding a carved top so before i glue the top on(wich i think i am gonna use some spalted tiger maple that i found at my freinds sawmill) i made a template of the body out of black plexyglass, attached it to the body so it is flush all the way around with 1 5/8 screws.then remove from body, these screw holes are for later.now cut out of the template the slot for the neck pocket. wich on mine is almost the whole length of the template cause i am having the neck run 2" past the brigde. but you have to make sure all your cuts on the template are exact!! because this is what your router guide is going to follow. you'le have to use a template guide on your router for my way just make sure the bit is the same size as the template guide on the router! then i am going with a 4 deg angle on my neck so i laid out on some 3/4 pine the angle wich seems to work out to be 0 - 15/16 in 12" and i cut four shims. with that angle on each of them. and now for the tricky part- this will only work if you are glueing a top on later! attach the template to the body with the screws as before but!! dont tighten, leave them all very loose(you need to slide the shims in later). slide the first two shims in under the temp. parralleling the neck pocket cut out. tighten down the screws lightly until the temp is against the shims. eye up everything and check that the temp. is straight and not bowed any where. if you are doing a les paul design i dont think you will have this problem but i am doing a kinda prs/pbass style and the top and bottom horns were getting in the way of the template being flush with the body at the neck pocket, so i cut them off of the temp. and since i allready have the screw holes in the body it wont be a problem realining. if everything looks good take the next two shims andslide them in the temp. wherever they fell like they will work good for you . i then glued mine on with epoxy and attached it with small screws so i can reuse on the next guitar i build. set your router bit depth and go to town! but i would first practice on a seperate piece of wood so you can check everything and make sure the jig works. but hey if someone has a better way please let me know, i am just starting at this so i am learning as i go. rye
  7. the bodies are going good so far . i have three that i got out of that plank. there all cut out and routed to size using a plexyglass template i made up . last night a was out in the shop till 1:30 in the morning making another template/jig for routing in the neck pocket at a 4 degree angle . and i routed one of the bodies so far with the jig and it worked good! i am having the neck run al the way past the bridge so it wil be like a neck thru, kinda like the way "jaros" guitars are made. its looking good so far!

  12. i was thinking about giving it a try on one of my projects. it would be 11/16 thick at the thickest piont and would be carved of course. how does it sound ? it seems like a deccent hardwood and has a kinda lace wood look to it but in reverse colors.

  21. thanks man what a great site! now all i got to do is get some cash! ive been out of work for two months so far do to knee surgery it sucks! but as soon as its bak to normal i am gonna get me some of that fine wood!
  22. heck you dont need any if you dont want. but a volume knob is nice to control the output from the guitar so if you have a heavy over drive on and you want just a little breakup sound turn down your volume and you can get a diferent level. as far as the tone knob some time i turn mine down a little bit sometimes. but its a personal preference you can put one on your guitar or you can just wire it through the tone.
  23. hey i will definetly keep that hint in mind . how do i contact gilmer? do they have a web site?
