  1. yes, I know about the links page on projectguitar.com

I was more curious if anyone had any RECOMMENDATIONS.

I need some mahogany stock to fill a trem cavity on a guitar. Any body have any good suggestions on suppliers to get this from??

Or do you think for something this simple and non-guitar specific, i'd be best to go to a local hardwoods distributor?

if you could just highlight the word recommendations in there :D

  2. Okay.....

I'm playing with the idea to build a 8 string guitar, when done with current projects.

A Meshuggah Ibanez 8 string type copy seems very appealing to me,

From what I understand this thing has a 30" scale neck. Yep. Huge!!!

I have cadded this and printed it out.....just to get a feel for the neck......and yep, it's freaking huge......it's hard to make power cords on top strings at top frets.

My question has to do with the scale length.......Cause from what I understand.....for proper set-up you need at least a 27" or higher scale length set-up to max out the top low strings. With going this 27", 28", 29" or 30" length route......I suspect you get into trouble with the lower (or higher for that matter) E strings........meaning the high E will get seriously out of wack when going the 30" route.

    Is this assumption correct???

And if so......this Novax or Fanned fret idea....will off set the downside of going the longer scale length route, by having a proper shorter scale length at the bottom end of the fret board and a longer scale length at the top of the fret board. In addition to having a more natural finger spread when fretting.

In addition to looking darn cool.

So say you want the best of both worlds..........what would be an ideal 8 string combo.

    27"/25.5"

    28"/25.5"

    28.5"/25.5"

    29"/25.5"

    30"/25.5"

    ????

    Charlie hunter fan?

  4. Just off the top of my head, I think that Touchstone Tonewoods is your closest place to get supplies from.  They have good stuff but they're a bit pricey.  I think David Dyke is down your direction too, but they are pricey (but you get what you pay for and they do good stuff).

If you're short of funds, you can always butcher a knackered guitar of all it's bits.

Good luck and definately go to the libary and order that book.  It'll help more than you realise  :D

Thanks, any chance of some links to them.

I also wanted to ask about neck construction. I can go two ways with the options of neck strength, both possible, although i didnt believe one at first, but my teacher is friends with a luthier, so i'll believe him. 1. obviously, a truss rod down the neck, fingerboard on top.

    2. My other option was to have i straight piece of ply through the whole guitar, neck into body, i wasnt sure, and im still not, but if someone could clarify that, that'd be great

    cheers

  5. Hi guys, sorry if this is in the wrong place or whatever, i'm new to this place.

I'm at school, and for my D.T. project i'm ding a guitar, and need some help, as it's my first 'from scratch' build (previously i've put necks and bodies and done a bit of wiring).

I'm building an electric guitar, solid body, and jut need a few pointers. Tools arent a problem, as the school has most stuff.

I firstly wondered if there were any blueprints on here, in particular for a les paul, as the neck will be glued, and i generally prefer the sound.

Secondly, what woods can i use. We have a good supply of mahogony for the body, which i gladly accepted, my real problems start at the neck, and fingerboard. The school has beech, and a few manufactured woods, ply, MDF etc. So what can i use for that.

Thank you for any help, really appreciate it.
