  1. :D Hi,

I have one of the "pullers" from Stew Mac and it works great. Just be sure to put a cloth between it and your finish before using.

    Peace,

    Dave

I want to get one of these from stew-mac so I can remove my trem post bushings on my project and redrill them about an 1/8" deeper.

I just hope it'll have enough power to get them out since I had to use a mallet to get them in.

I've also thought of just making one similar to that design. It's almost like a battery post puller in reverse...sort of.

  2. :D +1

I'd go with 4 bolts and shape the heel so that it gets thinner on the treble side.  You can always trim the bolts to whatever length.  I did this on a travel guitar, I used threaded inserts in the neck and machine screws for the bolts, and I recessed the bolt heads into the heel wood so that they were barely sticking out.

  3. :D He does some very nice original work. No CNC, all by hand.

    Peace,

    Dave

    :D Hi,

Looks like it is from Dave Bauer in Indiana.  True?

    Peace,

DavP.S. He makes some pretty nice stuff that a guy can finish.

i have this body nothing has been routed yet but heres what i was planning. heres a link to the pictures. any comments appreciated.

  4. :D Hi,

Assuming that you have all the rest of the wiring of the pickups correct, solder the gounds to the back of the pot where you have the highest number of other grounds (called star grounding).

    Peace,

    Dave

OK. I bought a Gibson 498t humbucker for my guitar. It has four cables. Red, Green, White, Black and Shield. The instructions say to connect Red to controls; Solder green and white, tape them and leave them alone; and to connect Black and Shield to ground.

I assume that I have to connect the red one to the toggle switch. The Green and White cables are easy. Now, where the hell do I connect Black and Shield?

This is just for curiosity, as I sent my guitar to a store so that they install the oick up.

  5. :D Hi,

He winds them hotter (or not), plus I conferred with him on pot and cap values. It turned out great. I use a "secret" recipe of amber and clear oils. After I'm done, I wax with ACTUAL carnauba wax, not the auto stuff. E-mail me at dlblackburn1@msn.com and I'll send you photos. I'c post one here if I knew how......computer man, I'm not!

    Peace,

    Dave

Im intriuged, in what way did he voice them for your woods, what sort of oil finish did you use? and did you go for "hot" pickups?

  6. :D Hi,

If your budget will allow, and if your don't like the pups you already have, contact Mike Gray at mgray55@hotmail.com for a great set of Chubtones. They will set you back about $150 or so, but Mike will voice them for your woods. I just finished a totally mahogany strat with Chubtones and an oil finish, and it sounds great!

    Peace,

    Dave

Im finishing off a pre-rout strat thats made out of mahogony and really don't know how its going to sound as i've never played one.

Anyways its my first try at building a guitar and i bought  the GFS premium hot alnico's

    (btw its s/s/s configuration)

Is this a safe bet on a good sound or would a lower output set suit mahogony better?

as i don't have unlimited money any help is well appreciated

    Chris

  7. :D Hi,

Don't let anybody stop you from making something you really want to experiment with. I would suggest that you chamber the body, and if that doesn't ease the "brightness" enough, add a neck of mahogany or black korina. I made a LP type with a chambered naturally-stained maple body, black korina/pao ferro neck, and 490/498 pickups, amd seasoned Lp players loved it. It found a very happy home. Used an oil finish, too. So you CAN break some of the rules!

    Peace,

    Dave

Just curious if anyone has ever seen an All Maple Les Paul? Im gonna make a les paul for my next project just wondering what everyone would think of one. It would be

    Ultra curly maple top

    Semi curly maple body

    Ultra curly  maple neck

Opinions? Yes? No? Also anyone got an idea what kinda tone would come out of the thing?

  8. :D Hi,

Let's see: Fiberglass over wood. Of course, you could always put strings on a brick! Just kidding. The comments about Jack White IMO are correct. There is a reason the best guitars are made of wood with a niro or an oil finish, IMO, of course.

    Peace,

    Dave

I was thinkning it would be kind of cool to make a guitar made of wood but coated in fiber glass, i dont know why i dont know if there are any benefits but if any body knows if its possible or just more trouble than its worth that'd be great, thanks.

  9. :D Amen, brother!!!!

yes, and you could be like the guy who came into my shop last week. Didnt like the quote i gave him, went and bought a soldering iron (or, acquired one), proceeded to TOTALLY stuff it all up, killed a pot, and dropped the hot iron on the nice baby blue finish, leaving a massive brown burn.

I "re-installed" the pickup for him today, at a much higher price than i originally quoted him. He loves it now. Lesson learnt.

  10. :D Hi,

In my experience, the chambered body gives a lot more acoustic resonance to the unplugged guitar. My local physics guy says that that, in turn, changes the way the string vibrates through its arcs and alters the sound slightly. Is this true? Don't know for sure, but I've made amny solid body guitars and then changed only the body to being chambered while leaving everything else the same. The chambered ones always sound a bit more "full". Then again, maybe I'm full of it!!

    Peace,

    Dave :D

does chambering the body of a guitar really affect the sound, I know it creates more feedback, but other than that is there a difference? I dont care much about the weight of the guitar, it has never been a problem, so should I still do it?

  11. :D Hi,

I've used everything from Rio Grande Texas and BBQ hums to Harmonic Design Vintage Plus to Seymour Duncan SH-1n, SH-1b, and SH-4. As the previous poster stated, it all depends on the style you're going for.

    Peace,

    Dave

I was wondering if anybody has any ideas about which pickups would do best in a semi-hollow that's slightly hollower than a tele thinline, but not quite full hollow archtop style, and not give to much feedback, and have a nice crunch under some distortion?

    Like... a rock hollowbody.

    Chris

  12. :D Thanks for all the help, Lovecraft!

    Peace,

    Dave

The Stew-Mac Superswitch is the easiest to find. The Allparts EP0078-000 (which Brian carries) and the WD WDE5DL Oak single wafer will also work well - if you're set up as an OEM/dealer with WD, I highly recommend that Oak single wafer (and if you're not, it's usually just a matter of a phone call to get set up, since you're a builder). HTH

  13. :D Thanks, anyway. I appreciate the help. I'll lok for the 5-lug model. Any sources you can give me?

    Peace,

    Dave

I don't know of any way to do it with a stock Strat-style switch, sorry. The problem is that a stock switch isn't really a 5-way switch, it's a 3-way that simply shorts 1 and 3 together to get position 2, and 3 and 5 to get position 4.

  14. :D Hi,

I'd go with a Bartolini ZBS70 in the neck and a ZBS80 in the bridge. Great clean sounds that can be split, tapped, etc. And can be overdriven beautifully. I would get ahold of ron@starspickups.com

    Peace,

    Dave

    Hi all

I'm in the process of pickup selection. Because I'm trying to

made a PRS-copy I was thinking in get the original PRS pickups,

the HFS and the Vintage Bass humbuckers. They are 120$ online.

My project is a mahogany body, mahogany neck-thru and a

maple top set. I'm interested in getting a clear sound, no heavy

or hot rock music style :-)

What do you think about this pickups? Anybody has use it in a custom

project? What pickup do you recommend to use instead of the original

    to get a similar sound?

    Any comment is welcome!

    Thanks

  15. :D Hi again,

I hate to be a bother, but my 5-way lever switches only have 4 lugs on each side. Is there a way to use these? Would it be better to go:

    1) Bridge split

    2) bridge hum

    3) both hums

    4) Neck hum

    5) Neck split

    Peace,

    Dave

    Try this -

    5way_std.png

That's a two pole switch - a four pole gives you more options, but this has all the choices you listed.

  16. :D Thank you, Thank you. I really appreciate the replies and all the help. Are there any other ways to maybe vary the positions on the 5-way switch so it also works?

    Peace,

    Dave

  17. :D

    Hi,

OK, I'm embarrassed. How do I wire an Anderson H1 in the neck and an Anderson H3+ in the bridge to a 5-way two-sided blade switch so that I can get

    5) neck alone humbucker

    4) neck split single coil

    3) both hums

    4) bridge split single coil

    5) bridge alone humbucker

Being that I'm dense, I need the color wires to waht pole on the switch, etc. I've searched but can't find this. Please help.

    Tahnks and Peace,

    Dave

  18. :D Hi,

One other thing to consider is to do away with the need for long-shaft pots. Just rout the control cavity deeper so that regular-length shafts will work. I've done this many times, and it works, unlike some of the other "bright" ideas I've had.

    Peace,

    Dave

  19. :D Hi,

A few possibilities for you - Duncan SH-1 bridge is great for what you've described, also the Bartolini ZBS80 is very good, along with the Gibson 500TPeace,

    Dave

Hey everybody, I know theres alot of questions about pickups around here but I have one(and I've researched and i know exactly what I'm looking for so I was hoping you guys would help.)

I have a guitar routed hum-sing-hum and I have cheapo pickups for it right now because I'm doing it on the cheap, but I've decided to ask about upgrading the bridge pickup to something better. I've been looking at the Duncan Custom, The Duncan Distortion and the Duncan JB. I want smooth highs that aren't harsh, I want a fair size midrange, I don't want it scooped and a noticable but not huge bottom end. I read all the reviews on Harmony central but they either don't know what they're talking about or they all have differeing opinion on some issues. I also want to be able to hit pinch harmonics fairly easy because I can play pinch harmonics because of done them easily on other guitars before but on my current main guitar I always have a hard time hearing them. I want to be able to play metal but also bring it down for classic rock style songs and I don't want it to be too bright. A short list of bands I play would be..

    Iron Maiden(hot rails)

    Judas Priest(EMG)

    Metallica(EMG)

    Megadeth(JB)

    Guns and Roses(Alnico 2 pro i think?)

Van Halen (custom wound bastardized pickup)

If I can't get all of this in one of those pickups,or any pickup it would be much appreciated if someone could give me another suggestion or a suggestion out of those pickups.

    Thanks, Spencer.
