It isn't all that important. I'm just such an insane explorer fan that I like to see everything that has anything to do with explorer type guitars.

It is not I don't like or own other guitars. I like the explorer type the most.

Hi Coen,

Searched everywhere. Can't find anything. The only thing I found where some old articles in 'Music Maker' by Ted Oberg. (nice guitar player, by the way)

He only describes flatting the frets but doesn't mention anything about a radius. The articles are in dutch. If you're interessed I will try to scan them and mail them to you. The quality is a little poor because I don't have the originals but photocopies.

What exactly is a VARIAC?

Because the VARIAC I know is used in a light-dimmer. (correct word?)

I mean that switch in the wall to turn the lights a little low.

Perhaps you mean a heavy kind of resistor (threadwound) that sits between your amp and the speaker.

If so, if you mean that resistor thingie your tubes will wear out earlier because your amp is blasting 'full throttle'.

I used a power soak (maybe same thing) but was not satisfied with it.

Thanx for the reply.

I've mailed tsl602000 (he speaks the same language) so it's a little easier to communicate.

I sprayed with poly paint. I believe it is a 1 can system Color + hardener.

What went wrong is probably my own fault. I tried to polish the color paint and I should polish the clear coat that comes on top.

The polish I used was probably to agressive so it dissolved the paint. So instead of polishing I was stripping the paint. A bit like paint remover.

I've sanded my guitar down (again) and i will trie again.

Hi,

I'm painting my guitar with poly urethaan paint.

So far I've destroyed: 1 garbage can, 7 t-shirts, my daughters bycicle(it stood in the way while spraying), 1 pair of jeans, 2 can's of paint and the most important my good humeur.

I'm getting a little sick of it.

I've been working on this for 2 weeks already.

Spraying didn't work, probably my own mistake

Rolling didn't work, couldn't get rid of the 'orange peel'

Painting with a brush worked best but after sanding (grit 600, 1000, 1200)

I started polishing and the layers of paint peel of.

I'm getting a tennis ellbow of all the sanding and polishing.

Please any suggestions how to make it work or whatever I'm doing wrong.

Hi Everybody,

Anybody ever heard of a Custom guitar?

It is not a handmade model or customized. The brand name is Custom.

My dad gave it to me when I became 16 (that long ago?, Yes that long).

I only know that I got it in 1977.

It's a les Paul imitation. Great pick ups, glued in neck with a truly Gibson style volute. In other words it looks excactly like a Gibson Les Paul. I believe it's japanese.

I don't have my camera near, otherwise I would have taken a picture.

It is a beatifull guitar which sounds and plays great.

I play it a lot on it but it has little or no sign of wearing out.

Who can tell me something about this guitar.

(not for commercial reasons but for emotional reasons)

The scale lenght is measured from the top nut to the point where the string touches the bridge.

I checked in one of my books:

Martin Koch (Building Electric Guitars)

Quote: The scale lenght is the distance between the two points on which a string rests, i.e. the front edge of the nut and its saddle on the bridge

So, the distance between the nut and the 'touching' point of the bridge is

24 1/4" ,or 25.5"

The 'touching' point varies from bridge to bridge.

A Stratocaster style bridge has a different touching point than a Gibson style tune o matic.

Hi Everybody,

Anybody ever painted the plastic of a (humbucker) pickup?

Why would you do that, you might ask. The answer is simple. The pickups are beige (smokey white) and I want them black. I don't want to buy new ones.

Any suggestions?

Hi everybody,

I thought I let you know what I did with the paint job om my homemade explorer style guitar.

I'm new to the forum and this is my second visit.

You could say this is the story of how to get a divorce in two simple steps.

Step 1 : Start building your own guitar.

It's an addiction. You can't think of something else.

Step 2 : Paint your guitar.

Today at work I was constantly looking at the clock to get home.

I was going to paint 'the beast'

I had three coats painted on the guitar, not with a spray gun but with a brush.

It looked nice but I was not satisfied. I was going to sand and polish it.

It worked rather nice but it took to long.

Well, I have a spray gun but never worked with it so, I sanded the beast and hung it on the porch (is this the right spelling?)

I took out the spray gun and began to prepare things.

I sprayed before but only with can's.

What happened?

Well, while spraying I saw that the floor was beginning to turn to 'ferrari-red' also the carbage can and a bycicle wich was standing about two meters away.

I panicked and began to wash the floor with terpentine. While doing that I banged my head to the guitar wich was hanging there. The side of my hair is now 'ferrari-red', also are my fingernails

I thought: Now I'm in trouble !!

I called my wife and my daughter and you won't believe it : They almost peed (correct spelling?) their pants.

Conclusion:

Think before you do!

Don't rush into it!

Most important: Marry the right wife

By the way, the guitar has to be sanded again and the paint job on my hair is nice (but I'm not going to sand that)

Hi, After quite a lot of visits I thought it would be time to register.

So here I am.

I'm a huge gibson explorer fan, with far to less money so I'm building a kind of explorer myself

Searching the internet I came across this site and it's AWESOME.

I've made it my starting page.

I Specially like the tutorials.

All I've got to do now is to find out how the forum works.
