You would probably be better off doing repairs locally by word of mouth. Believe me, once people find a competent tech they will tell everyone they know. There's a guy here in town that opened up a shop 3 or 4 years ago and within 6 months he had more business than he could handle. The poor guy's a wreck.

Start small and build up. Conventional wisdom is not often wrong.

Painted on binding will, in my opinion, always look cheap no matter how "good" it is.

Tru-Oil is a great finish, but I don't think it will keep a maple fretboard from eventually becoming worn and dirty.

More info please. What kind of guitar? Set neck or bolt on? Hardtail, TOM, trem? Did you get it already made or did you put it together?

Warmoth and others offer flame maple as neck wood. I have a Mighty Mite neck that has some nice flame in it.

If your wood was properly dried and stable it should be no problem.

Speaking about cheapness and being cheap: do you know of a good source for dirty-chep (second hand?) Telecaster parts like pickuards, bidges and electronics controls paltes?

Just buy some Fender pickups and be done with it. Jeez.

Those Wilkinsons have alnico magnets, and the screws are holding the base plate on.

Those pickups have ceramic magnets with steel poles, typical of lower end guitars. In alnico pickups the pole pieces are individual magnets. Ceramic pups don't have to sound bad, but alnicos are generally higher quality and tend to be smoother and fuller sounding. It all depends on what sound you want and how much you're willing to pay to get it.

StewMac gives a string spacing on the Tusq preslotted nut. I use this one all the time.
