The other guy in my band had a green acrylic Mockingbird. That damn thing must have weighed like 50 pounds or something.
It's gone now. Got traded in toward the Hamer Artist.

Production Fender Teles (the ones I've examined anyway -- your mileage may vary) have the flat spot where the output jack goes. I've always thought it was a bit strange, but then Leo never really did anything without a good reason.

I already have a marshall 50w acoustic amp. Butt most of the time I will be playing on my churchs PA system.
I already know about all the manufactures and there strong points ETC ETC.
What I want to know is if there any custom builders out there that have impressed you.
Right now I am almost certin I will go with david mkya. I just dont like ANY production guitar out there so I need to go custom.
Oh.

The best thing to do is go into a music store that has a lot acoustics and try them all. When you find one that's comfortable and sounds good unplugged, then plug it in and try every acoustic amp they have.
You are getting an acoustic amp too, right?
By the way, I have this one:

The 2005 model even comes with an onboard tuner.

Have you seen this stuff? I bet it's probably thin enough for what you want.
-
If they have threaded bushings that screw in from the face of the headstock (like Fender tuners), you can screw them in finger-tight then tweek the positions of the tuners so that they are all straight (put all the keys parallel to the headstock to help with this). Finger-tighten the bushings tight enough so they won't slip. Then tighten each bushing a little more (making sure they don't turn on you) just enough so that the pins make a small indentation in the back of the headstock.
Take the tuners off and drill away. This is a bit easier to do with Fender tuners, as the backs are rectangular and you can put a straightedge on the bottom to line 'em up.
ALso, if you use a drill bit that's just a tad bigger than the posts it will give you some wiggle room.

I'm wondering about the X-acto saw. Are the blades narrow and stiff enough for the job? Is it worth buying a set to try it out?

I'm by no means an expert but I have made do with a used body or two.
I'd check to see if the pickguard and original Tele bridge will cover the hogged out holes. If they will, great. If not, you can plug them and rerout.
Then check the bridge mounting holes. If they're "wallered out" (Okie lingo), you can dowel them and redrill. That's pretty easy.
The amount of wood missing probably won't make that much audible difference in the amplified tone. Unless you're Eric Johnson or Allan Holdsworth or something. Then all bets are off.

Rereading your post, you seem offended that some company would ripoff the JEM design. There have been Fender and Gibson ripoffs forever, by ACTUAL companies, even. Still are. So why not a Jem clone?
Hey, for the price it might even be an ok starter guitar.

Doesn't look too bad if you have it slung over one shoulder like that.

If ya do it and you don't use it, no big. If ya do it and you use it, bonus.
If ya don't do it and you don't use it, again you'll never know, but if you would have used it, you'll have lost out.
And if you do it and forget you did it, and don't use it anyway ... never mind.
