OK here we go.....
Being the guy that started this thread I though I would let you know the outcome....
I went to the pawn shops around a saw nothing but abused guitars.. some that made me sad..... but that another thread....
So I wen to back to the guitar center and played every guiter from $200 to $550- dollars...
Here's my outcome... and in no way am I a "acoustic guitar PRO....
1. martins DX1 and dxk2: (pruce or koa to and "strange" compound plastic back and sides... nice guitar about $450 and loud.. tons of bass.. but the construction is a bit weird and the clarity was a bit more muddy that I wanted to hear...
2. taylor baby: nice sounding and loud guitar but the intonation was a bit off on 2 of them ( I have been playing for 15 yeas so I am not BS-ing you taylor fans...
3. epiphone various models including masterbuilt: Not a good guitar. Intonation problems and the tuning machines and nut /sadle are cheap and "notchy" ( yah know stick while tuning)
4. various takamine g-series guitars: suprisingly clear and loud.. but a bit plastic-y even the "nofinish-natural models" I would call their tone ovation-esque...
5: yamaha: Nice sounding for the price but all seemes laminate tops ( in my range anyway) and were not loud enough or had "clear boomy bottom..."
6 HERE'S the one I bought....
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<DRUM ROLL PLEASE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Ibanez artwood series....
I have NEVER liked Ibanez guitars and have always played strats and les pauls...
...but the solid wood top, intonation, playability, clarity and price were the ticket////
Soooo I played a few and picked aout a model ... the I bought one on ebay for 200.00 (including a hardshell case...)
I DO feel bad for "using " the guitar center.........
At least I'm not one of those punks that grab a PRS and bash it against a mesa stack while turning around "wishing" I could play...
Then bragging about how my mommy is going to get me one for graduation....
Once again that's another thread...

I would suggest hitting the pawn shops and see what you can find there. With acoustics, the more they're played the better they sound. Sooooo.....If you can find one that you like that's already broken in, you should be able to get a pretty good deal on it. Just make sure it has a solid wood soundboard and preferably a solid wood body not laminate or NATO (read: plywood) Play as many as your fingers will stand until you find the one that says BUY ME!!!!
THat's some good advice
thanks I have not bought it yes.......... but they just put up a new "Guitar Center" here in Syracuse so I'll be checking a few guit-fiddles out on lunch tuesday
thanks

hmmm
looking at them now

Quite ironic...
my current acoustic is a yamaha...
aI have no clue what model it is as the label was worn off (by me) after using is as an ashtray years ago... ...
either way.. it's a bit beat (although it has some serious sentimental value).........
yamaha is a somewhat cryptic company...
any models I am to be aware of my northern friend
(I'm from just south of the lake ontario)...... and I've been known to visit your great lands......

I have a jcm 800 dual channel (2205) and a half powre sinle channel jcm 800....
I love both of these amps... and voted marshall...
but the best tone I ever had was a sovtek mig 60......(or was it a 50?)
I played my new(er) strat through the 800 dual chnl straight the other day....
man what tone.. what drive.....
and I've always been a metal humbucker /les paul guy.. but what a pair the strat and jcm800....
whew.. I'm still hearing it....... -
I suppose you have a point there.....
-
in the stewmac catalog and probably in their online free help pages it shows you how to do it with a coping saw..
Yeah the stew mac page was some what helpful....
I was just wondering if people have used coping saws.. and what to look out for....
thanks
-
that's not right.
-
poetic..
no kidding...
it is...
-
That's an awesome way to keep in tune......
.........that bridge with a locking nut...
I wish I had that setup on a few gig's I remember.....
-
BTW i did use the search function....
and I did review the "strat from scratch" tut.. ( I do not have a bandsaw)
rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I have a stewart mac neck.....
it's got the paddle type headstock and I want to cut it like a strat...
I have a strat for referance..
What type of saw do I use?
is this hard to do?
-
are we talking about THE "Dan Spitz" ????????????
-
I think this is a valid question..
are these available?
(pre - fretted boards)
and if so what does one do to find one
(remember the original post - question...?)
thanks

I have a design for a guitar I would like built, where would I go to have this guitar made, with a set neck (I was looking at Warmouth guitars but they said they only make bolt on necks) and custom headstock? What are good online sites or shops in new england to go for this?
I would go to soulmateguitars.com
that dude seems serious about his woork./

Seems that they have poplar as well...
anyway,
there is a hardwood seller near me ///
anyone ever hear of gutchess lumber??
www dot gutchess dot com
I am going to call and see if they'll sell to the public...
-
yes,
I's not the affoardability..
it's the availability I was kinda' thinking about...
not to mention.. you get to pick out the stock.....
did the jem get finished?
how does it play?
is the neck wood "stable"
thanks :D

If they have maple it's fine, but you can get it much cheaper other places. I don't have a Home Depot near me, but I know Lowes doesn't carry maple. You should really look for a hardwood place near you. Or even a furniture shop for the small amoumt you'd need. The furniture place would probably glue stuff up for you for a small fee, too.
I guess I've been looking for a local source for awhile and have not seen one....
I was just buying some other stuff for home and saw some nice figured wooden planks....
and behold it it was maple....
NOW the big question...
Is it the correct kind of maple?
-
Don't know how the maple from home depot is, but I guess it is simply not dry enough. Dry enough to build a table, but not for a guitar...
but perhaps one could get ahold of a few chunks that have been there for a year or so?
-
Could you use maple from home depot?
To build a 3 piece laminate neck?
Or to learn how to buils one to be more exact.....
Kinda....... maybe a good way to start expreimenting?????/

I agree with you Greg. I had a G&L Tribute strat (ash - natural) and it was clean, excellent quality, well finished, well dressed frets, etc, etc.....They do make good quality stuff.
had a g&l strat... (400 model maybe) it was RAD.. but at the time I was into the metal scene.. and could not bare to hack it a part...
si I sold it.. better than hacking it I suppose.. but I wish I had it now.....
