  1. Hey All

Its been a while since I posted some pics

When I posted the original pics the neck wasnt glued on

Ive been busy around the house and have only managed to do a few things since then

I glued the neck on and routed out the knobs and switch cavities

I changed the shape of the headstock to Gibsons bookpage style

Ive also added most of the hardware and strung it up

This was to show a few muso friends where Im up to with it

It basically needs a final sand, staining and lacquer and Im there

I still need to buy pickups and knobs

Ive decided on Seymour Duncan pearly gates(neck) and duncan custom (bridge)

Hopefully it will be finished sometime in March

  2. I had what you are looking for, but due to my computer crashing late last year I not only lost that but also a lot of other valuable guitar related information :D

I have bought a lot of the parts required to make it, but i hadn't started it so Im looking for this info also

  3. Hey guys

Just for reference I found plated metal Speed Knobs

Schaller make them and the only place I could find that sells them are:

clicky They are item number 5151

Im not going to get them as they are a bit pricey, AUD$14 each plus shipping, AUD$25

Im going to get some tophat bell knobs instead

  4. Hey guys

Do any of you know if I can buy gold plated metal Speed Knobs?, or gold plated metal knobs that are a similar size to speed knobs

Ive done the google and have seen Q-parts etc, and just cant find what I want

Im looking for something in plain gold (no inlays)

    Thanks

  5. If you need a stronger concentration for it to work I doubt you need to then dilute the stonger concentration.

What I meant was, once the timber is bleached and dried does the chlorine then need to be washed out of the timber (with water or something else?) in order to stain and apply lacquer, or can you stain and lacquer straight over the top of the dried chlorine?

    dayvo :D

  6. Liquid (Pool) Chlorine (13-15% Sodium Hypochlorite, regular Clorox is 5% just for reference sake) will bleach out dyes and stains.

How effectively? Don't know, it's a case-by-case basis. Sometimes great, sometimes suck, you don't know from one piece of wood to another, but that is the proper product to use.

Sometimes you're just screwed and need a good W.O.D. around to 'take out the trash', hard as that may be to admit sometimes. :D

I've had laminates that were 1/4" thick that that happened to on me, I planed the entire top off to put another laminate on it, and found the dye had penetrated 100% all the way to the bottom of the laminate (capillary action I guess). Not always, but it's happened.

    Hey Drak

Does the chlorine need to be nutralised with water (or anything else, if so, how) prior to staining and more importantly prior to applying spray lacquers

  7. Nice work Dayvo - it all looks very clean and well attended to.

How deep is the carve? It looks pretty shallow, but I find my carves look shallow if I flow all the curves smoothly, and they pop once there's some gloss to show off the contours. The once that look dramatic pre-finish tend to look a bit clunky once they're shiny.

    Thanks Setch

Im wrapped - a good word from one of the masters :D

The Lacewood was only 12mm thick at the start

To get a reasonable curve on the carve, the sides are only 1-1.5mm thick

I originally was'nt going to have binding but I could see it would look crap without it

Ive washed some Metho over the Lacewood and grain looks fantastic

By the way Im thinking of bleaching the Lacewood before I stain

  8. Thanks for the comments,guys

Oz Tradie, I used the overhead dimentions.

They are not exact and my guitar is slightly smaller than a genuine Les Paul

The side view was something I was experimenting with to get an idea of the neck and headstock angles

The cutouts are'nt anything, I needed a large piece of cardboard to do full size plans and as my wife used to work for Nestle, I borrowed it. It is part of one of their promo bins :D

Maurits, These are the shades of blue and green I might try to achieve

    Blue

    Green

  9. Hey all

Ive been lurking in the background here for ages and I thought it was about time I posted a couple of pics to show you all where Im at with my first build

    Specs:

Les Paul - Brazillian Mahogany body and neck

    - Lacewood cap and headstock - to be staind green or blue or I might leave it au natural - dunno yet

    - Ebony fretboard - Paua inlays and jumbo frets

    - Gotoh gold tuners, bridge and tailpiece

I still need to buy all my electronics, but it will have

    - Seymour Duncan pups - neck SH-1 (4conductor wiring) and bridge SH-5

    - Push-push pots (Im doing the Jimmy Page schematics)

It will be finished in nitrocellulose lacquer

Ive still got a bit to do , but now Im getting close to the end Ill start posting more pics

By the way, this is a fantastic forum and Id like to thank everyone who contributes to it, as I probably wouldnt have got this far with out all the information available here :D
