  1. I have another product to add to this discussion

Several years ago when I was doing an automotive spray painting course, my lecturer suggested using

Toothpaste to get out fine scratches in the duco

It is also a very fine abrasive and worked a treat B)

    Hey guys

I suppose I should have added that my suggestion would be an easy way of maintaining an A1 finish from wear and tear, and as a guitar ages to help keep it looking great

There may be plenty of "made for" products out there, but as I said it was just a suggestion

  2. Ive ordered stuff from Stewmac and Lmii and had excellent service from both

I paid for the express service and the goods arrived 5-7 days later

As far as paying customs, you shouldnt have to pay any duties as long as your combined cost dosnt exceed AU$1000

It all has to be worked out in Aussie Dollars

You buy goods from a supplier and the total cost works out to be say AU$600

then add to this figure Customs Duty @ 5% = AU$30

then add your postage (for arguments sake, say) AU$100

    Total =AU$730

    then add GST (=10%) AU$73

The Grand Total is AU$803, which leaves you under the AU$1000 threshhold and therefore no fees or duties would be incured

Check out this link to Aussie Customs

    Hope this has helped

  3. Looks good to me....but John Catto would know better than I, so if you're using his plans to the letter then I think you're good to go.

Do his plans show that bevel at the end of the tenon?

    Thanks

The bevel is there because I wanted to get 2 necks from my laminated neck boards

Which I did with not a lot of room to play with, and the bevel is a result

On Johns plans the tenon width is 40mm and Ive had to guestimate the rest

  4. I have a set of 50's lp plans right here and the tenon for that is 30mmWx33mmHx76mmL. I used those dimensions on the all mahogany LP I built(which has no neck issues whatsoever). Based on that, I think you shouldn't have any trouble with that tenon, provided your wood isn't say...corrugated cardboard.

    peace,

    russ

    Thanks Russ

Thats a load off my mind

Im using John Cattos template plans for my guitar and his tenon dimensions are slightly larger

When I get a little more done, Ill post some pictures of the build so far

  5. Hey I am very interested in masking but i afraid with the faux binding, neck and fretboard, veneer etc masking. I didnt really get the curly thing with the tape to get smooth transactions. Can you maybe give a couple pics. It would really help. Thanks. Cos masking is one of my nightmares I may come to face after my bods is cut out.

I'm checking this stuff out for my first build, so you may be better off asking one of the other guys for help/information :D

  6. I should maybe change my avitar, I'm starting to think like him :D

I went to 3M's site and cant find any mention of the blue tape

Could you give me a link?

    Regards

    dayvo :D

By the way, thanks for the painting info

  7. Hey guys

I've noticed on a lot of 'In Progress' etc. pictures that a pale blue tape is used to cover areas and/or possibly protect them when staining , clear coating etc.

Does this tape have any advantages over paper masking tape?, if so, what are they?

Can anyone give me a link to the manufacturers website, or where I can buy it from?

  8. This post is for the Aussie members of the forum

I've just found a supplier here in Oz of IPS Weld-On 16 :D

This is the binding glue StewMac sells

It can be purchased here in Oz from Mulfords Plastics

(they have branches in most capital cities)

    Cost for 5oz tube - AU$11

While I'm bringing up the subject, do any other Aussie members have info on retailers/distributors here in Oz of other guitar supplies that are hard to bring into the country?

  9. Oh, to live in the US, you guys are spoilt B)

Not only do you have easy access to some beautiful and exotic timbers, but the prices they're offered to you are fantastic :D

Here in Oz some of the more exotic timbers are hard to get and we pay through the nose for it :D
