Really cannot figure out what you like in this design...

I must admit I have no personal experience because for some reason I was able to play barré chords right away and never had difficulties... Being able to switch fast being obviously another thing...

But the way I try to teach to play a barré correctly is to play just the barré (the first finger across all six strings) and try to get all notes ring clearly first, then applying that to the actual chord. Try to curve the finger lightly. I'll write again when and if I have time.

I will try to find that Formica stuff.

I read about it and it appeared to be a brand name. I doubt that they import it where I live, but still, I will search for it.

I have seen a synthetic material that emulates mother of pearl on pocket knife handles. I'll try to find such a knife and ruin it in the name of guitar building.

May I ask why you cannot buy it online?

There was a post about this a while back.. seemed at the time the only option was to waste an ibanez for the trem.. part out the rest on ebay.  There were rumors about graphtech and the piezo saddles but i have no idea when that will happen.

Yeah, it was a thread started by me. Still waiting for that rumors to come true...

I also asked the official Ibanez retailer here in Germany and they confirmed that it wasn't to be had, even for ready money

Surely you can find a nice thick piece of properly prepared ash for around the same price? Have you looked online?  (I picked up a nice alder block for 20 euros, that's why)

Actually it seems to me like a modified "widow" headstock from B.C. Rich. For that matter, I would prefer making it a bit more like the widow headstock, those very sharp, nasty, pointy bits are also very weak parts. I suggest you either change the design, reinforce them with metal or stuff or plan to be very careful!

That right there is what set me off. I wasn't trying to flame you (which I think I may have done  ) and for that I apologize. My point remains the same, you're saying that the guitarist for one of the biggest bands is 'an overrated dumb guy'. Now does that make any sense to anyone? If you would've said, "He's not very fast, and he doesn't know alot of theory," that would have been fine by me. When you come in completely antagonizing someone, even Britney (she must be doing something right!) that's a different story. When you get to his level, you can say he sucks, deal? I work darn hard on my playing skills a lot of the time, and I can't dream about sweeping like he was. He's easily top 5% of the player population from what I've seen around here. Sure, there are better guys, but that doesn't make him bad.

Perhaps I was overdoing it, but I had read just before some things on other forums and stuff saying how great Tremonti is and was a bit pissed off. In fact, I believe I posted in the wrong topic, there you see how smart I am

My thought is:

a) you can shred? great! but:

are you a skilled musician with sense of beauty that is able to insert this shred technique in your music without degrading it to pure show-off?

And for my case: Tremonti is no way a great shredder, and when he shreds in a song I could just run away and scream... You know Michael Angelo? He is showing off, but at least it is really great shred technique

I myself am one of the strange people who wishes (and practices in order to pull it off) he could shred like Michael Angelo (No Boundaries, anyone?) but dislikes it!

What I believe is that anyone can shred - if you sit down hours a day and practice the right way - but almost no one can use this and make those lines speak... That's why I admire Vai so much

Who really gives a crap how he writes stuff? If he's so dumb, and you, apparently, are so smart, why is he the one living the dream? I call it smarts and hard work. You don't become one of the best known bands in the world by being dumb, that's for sure. He writes what's popular, and supports himself (very well I might add), so you basically call him a wanker. When you're on the top of the charts I might be a bit more apt to listen to your opinion.

What I was saying is: Tremonti's technique is not great (though: he got considerably better since the early creed days... No wonder if you got Troy Stetina and co. as teachers!). And he's got almost no idea about theory. At least he admits that.

By the way, if you want to know, in my opinion I am a horseshit musician... But if I were to judge other musicians comparing them to me, well then...

i picked up a nice strat clone for £30 from a randomn junk shop, ripped out the electrics (they were fried anyhowz), took off all the paint (with a butter knife *cries*) and drilled/cut a monkey grip style handle

You did what?

We're obviously not looking at the same clip, or you're using the wrong terminology.  When he stops playing, there are absolutely no repeated notes.  With an echo/delay, you would still hear his last notes repeating at least once more.  :?

greg, it depends on the time settings. A small delay time is what we are talking about. Long delays (I always have to think of the Surrounded solo or some Albert Lee stuff) that doubles notes does not help hiding flaws but instead repeats them making them more audible!

Has anyone seen Petrucci's rock discipline? Now that's fast, but even he uses delays live. My philosophy, if it sounds good, don't knock it. There's always someone faster and better than anyone out there. Plus, he's making quite a bit of money out of what he does, so give the man his dues!

Britney makes also quite a bit of money out of what she does. No way I am gonna give her her dues.

And Petrucci owns Tremonti a thousand times. (Vai, on the other hand, owns both twice as much).

I know a thousand guitarists that are as fast or faster than Tremonti, and most of them have got more musical taste as well. From one article with a sort of workshop with Tremonti I got to know more about his "compositional skills" and "technique". He is an overrated dumb guy. He's got no talent at all.

By the way, I heard clips of Tremonti with less effects and distortion. It sounded like pure $%&/§$?€.

Overall, would it be cheaper to buy a (strat) guitar body and neck from warmoth for around 325 dollars total, or get body and neck blanks, plans, and tools to fashion my own strat out of?

I have access to things like routers and saws, but I am concerned about the cost of things like fret-setters and other instrument-specific tools.

I also vote for doing the body yourself! Buy a great neck, maybe even custom like from doug at soulmate...

I think he deserves a bit more appreciation from musicians that he gets.  He went up a notch on my guitar players book.

dudes in need of some tuners only problem is I am looking for gold with diagonal inserts to fit my old Epiphone neck. Ive seen schallers and gotoh's with the diagonal inserts but none in gold. If anyone knows of any companys that make them please let me know.

I mean that many people saying OFR sounds better than a Ibanez LoPro.

I'd say it's different to tell if you do not have them tried on basically equal guitars.

If a humbucker won't fit, try the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails or JB Jr. They have enough balls to compete with most regular humbuckers out there.

The Jeff Beck Junior does for sure. There is absolutely no difference to a JB humbucker. Got no clue how they managed to do that, but they are incredibly similar to the humbucker version

The way I see it, you got a Korean RG for 200 Australian dollars less just for waiting some time. You're one lucky guy.

The RG with an S neck is horrendous though.

Another point for the fact that it's factory workers and not luthiers building those guitars.

it has 3 trem springs right now, if i add another 2 and tighen them down all the way would it really make a big difference?

hello, i am having a problem with my rg270dx tremelo.  I dissassembled the guitar to refinish it, and ever since i put it back together,  when it finally gets in tune, the back of the trem is seriously high off of the guitar

I agree with Godin. You have got the same number of springs as before by the way, do you?

Speaking of experimenting, I recently just cut a 1/2" slot all the way up the neck to fit the truss rod, and two CF rods.  I epoxied the CF's to each side and the truss rod fit snug in the middle, so far everything seems to be working great.

Hi there,

I want to build a guitar without a truss rod to improve the sustain, how would I go about doing this, I currently have 3 laminates that will make up the neck; 2 rock maple with a center laminate of bubinga, could i simply epoxy a carbon fibre rod in place of the truss rod to increase the stiffness?

Put a truss rod in it and make it a neck-through instead.

If I should choose the compound fingerboard, can I inlay a vine on it? Or is it difficult on pre radiused?

Inlaying is difficult in itself - do yourself a favor and radius it after inlaying. Besides, if you are skilled enough to make a vine inlay, a compound radius should be no problem at all

And about the Original FR or the Lopro, as always it is also a matter of personal taste, so I suggest you go and try a guitar (or more) with an original Floyd on it. I would go for the LoPro (the fact that you've always used one is another point for the LoPro, I'd say).
