personally I've seen enough V's out there. But thats just me
I would like too see a new orginal double cutaway design that looks cool...
How much I have to agree with you Godin! In fact I am damning myself trying to come up with the perfect design for me...
-
dont worry about that, continue all the song and then divide it in parts, and then check if it really sounds metallica like
then begin making changes
Looking at your avatar... I guess that's exactly how Green Day make their songs... Steal from others, checking if it sounds like the original band, if it does too much, change it slightly...
-
That is much much better... Cool.
-
Don't know how the maple from home depot is, but I guess it is simply not dry enough. Dry enough to build a table, but not for a guitar...
-
I would spend all my money on a ticket to wherever-you-live and a gun just to kill you if you would make a Jem out of oak or cherry... Or walnut for that matter
Nah, but why would you ever even want to???
-
I tried last time but since I use photobucket, thats the highest resolution so far. I did e-mailed it to somebody here, PM me your e-mail and I will send you a pic from my house today.
What's the point of mailing me a picture of your home?
EDIT: HAHA, cool misreading of mine
-
As soon as I get home I'll plug right into the amp and play a heavy metal happy birthday impromptu
-
Yeah! Metal Is Forever!
Happy Birthday...
-
Maiden, could you upload that pic in a better resolution?

What do your "actual" lists look like? (ie. not just fantasy, but ones that you at least truly intend to build)
- 24 fret neckthrough w/mahogany body, vine inlay, piezo trem (possibly floyd), wood inlay of beautiful girl on body, gold hardware, unsure whether single or double cut
- A "black" guitar to match the first, with evil girl painting on body
- A "deluxe" Strat... Basically a stratocaster replica with the best options available... Especially I am going for a beautiful birdseye maple neck, three-tone sunburst...
- A "Superstrat" soloist type, perhaps active EMGs or Evolutions, black, white binding, pointy headstock, thin neck, black (not cosmo black) hardware, ebony fretboard, floyd. May be turned into the second project ("black guitar"). 80s all the way with a modern twitch to it.
- A Steve Vai Euphoria-style acoustic (beautiful!)
- A bass... Not sure how it is gonna be.
Will take me at least ten years I guess! Think I am gonna start this summer.

I'm looking at getting a martin backpacker and was wondering what other people thought of them and if they're worth it or if I should just get a regular acoustic or one of those small ovations. also if it's worth getting the pickup in the backpacker or not. right now I only have a strat but my dad has an old yamaha acoustic that he never uses so what do you guys think I should do? thanks
What's the point of a pickup in a backpacker guitar? For gigs or recording, a backpacker is taboo. As traveling guitar, a pickup is of use only in combination with an amp, but you wouldn't travel with an amp at all, no?
The question is, why do you want a backpacker guitar? And what for?
If it's for practicing, a Yamaha Silent Guitar is even better. If it's to have a reasonably good sounding acoustic that is also of light weight, I think there are better alternatives. If its not only a "light weight" question, but of space, there are also other alternatives... Look for travel(ing) guitars... Try them out and decide for yourself...
Personally, I would not buy it.

Lace, Vintage Noiseless, and SCN pickups, two-point trems, LSR nuts, locking tuners, integrated Roland synth drivers, and various other options and improvements have been made in the last 30 years.
So, how many of them are improvements developed by or used firstly by Fender? Except the Noiseless pickups...
-
Build them!
But yeah, Fender is just a brand owned by someone that makes money off the great inventions Leo Fender made half a century ago. So it is obvious they make those "time machine" replicas and stuff in order to please the people with the money but without the true vintage strat (that are not all that good anyway). Wouldn't know about any really great new Fender improvement in the last 30 years.
-
Greg, I already posted two links, just click here, won't take a minute. It's a pity, but Fender DOES call it like that. And if you look at the pictures on ebay, you'll see the custom shop logo. That itself shows it cannot be a true vintage piece.

I have a similar question: In a solo of mine, I am using the following lick. I took it from some Chuck Berry solo.
e---------12------12 b-----12-------12--- g-14^-------14^-----
Do you think that it is immoral that I do this? I really cannot sleep at night thinking about this...
-
Now I understand your sign
Btw, the difference between a single-action and a double-action is that a double-action one can be used to counter both up-bow and back-bow of the neck.
-
Could you give us some specs?
-
(I'm pretty suspicious of those overprices boutique pickups...)
I wouldn't be. I have two seymour duncan vintage P-90s in my first guitar that were like $70 each. and It couldn't be more worth it! I've heard expensive and cheap pickups (in the same guitar) and the expensive pickups are IMO far supperior too the "budget" alternative. IMHO The pickups and electronics is NOT a place you can skimp too save money.
Completely agree with Godin... If I had to choose between a guitar with cheap wood and expensive pickups and a guitar with expensive wood and cheap pickups, I wood choose the one with the expensive pickups every day. Pickups and electronics are too important.

Jeff Beck is definitely one of the best...

-
-Birdseye maple neck with scarf-joint
(what finishes would look cool, but i want it to be super smooth and not tacky that some laquer feels like)
-Alder/ash body
-Hand wound Evo PU's with coil taps
-PRS 513 style wiring
-Maybe an active high/low booster/cutter
-black body with a cool flip-flop silver paint scheme of lots of faces
-Maybe a homemade sustainer, (the little gem type)
-Home made Floyd Rose bridge, Lo-pro style made using military aircraft grade hardened stainless steel!!! - a real B**ch to cut!!!
I might be able to make some titanium saddles as well for the FR but I'll have to see.
Oh and dont expect anything to soon as I have Exams and No money so it should be done middle summer after I've finished building one for a mate.
Cheers
Matt
What fretboard wood are you gonna use? If it's an all-black jem, I would suggest ebony... Are you joking about not only making hand wound Evolution-style pickups (where did you get the specifications, by the way?), but also making a lo-pro trem by hand (also - where did you get the instructions?)? And the sustainer, ok I see... and the 513-style wiring... mah... Good luck! For the trussrod a double action is obviously cool, but with those skinny jem necks I would use a single-action one...
-
Yes exactly...
-
Idch, wouldn't that be beautiful... A 900$ neck on a 25$ body!
-
There's a bloke on ebay who sells them for $99.99 with shipping anywhere in the world. He's very reliable (i've had 3 with no trouble now) and the shipping is only like 5 days. Just incase anyone wants to join the x-bridge club
Yeah I've seen it too. When I have spare money (won't be anytime soon) I'll certainly try it out. By the way, if I have a vintage-style vibrato (six-screw one), is it difficult to put a more modern one in (the one with two screws)?

I suppose you haven't got the templates you linked.
Well, there's a great PINNED TOPIC right on top of this same forum - called - you guessed it - TREM ROUTE COMPARISON CHART. Look there first, or search...
