Gee, was the topic of this post "alternate ways to slot a nut" or "convince me i need to buy nut files"? Obviously a $6 tool ment for another purpose isn't going to work as well as the real deal for 10x more. But as far a a sub $10 tool to get a bunch of small diameter files, you won't find anything else.
The small diameter ones (and even the bigger ones for that matter) are defiantly a pain to use, especially if the nut is already on the guitar. Takes two hands to hold at both ends of the file to keep any tension on them.

Cutting torch tip cleaner. Can be found for about $5 at Home Depot etc. Has a bunch of different diameter round files. I wouldn't want to do the whole job with it, but slot with a saw then file to the right width. I've used mine a bunch to lower slots on cheap guitars.

Thanks for the help guys.
I found out it is actually a lacquer finish, according to the manufacturer. I decided to go with the nail polish suggestion, and it looks like it'll work out. I built up a few layers and sanded flush with a small block, then added another few dribbles to the low spots. Should be good for a final leveling with 400 grit tonight, and then I'll hit it with the micro mesh and see if I can get it to blend.

My les paul copy had an unfortunate accident in its case the other day. The stupid lock key that I never use wiggled out of the pocket and did this.
Luckily its in a fairly unnoticeable place. Any advice on fixing this? I'm not certain, but I assume the finish is poly.
Thanks

Ebay seller "bezdez" also has really nice ones, even cheaper.
That's good to hear, I just ordered a couple from him. I've bought things from him before with great luck too.
Do you remember offhand what the trench width and depth for the bezdez rods were? If I could route that out now, I can start cutting down the neck blank while I'm waiting for the postman.

I'll take the newer Hiscock book. And I'm local so I may come have a poke through the box of tools too.
