Ummm... no. Shielding and Covers are 2 different things though some can serve both functions. This is a longer discussion than I am willing to put the effort into...sorry.

General consensus would be for a PAF the metal covers kill the highs from a pickup (the reason Eric Clapton removed his covers in the first place). Depending on the quality of your PAF cover the effects are slightly different.. I use high quality nickel silver covers and get good results with minimal effects to the overall sound.

There are other variations as Rickenbacker Toasters, Gretsch Filtertrons, anything Bill Lawrence designed for Gibson in the 70s all have different styles of shielding and covers.

On the other hand, the mineral spirits do look approximately like the oil will.....and this will look approximately blazin' hot when you get it oiled up.

I did wind a set of off white Diablos for it in case I don't like the black out. I also ordered some special unplated pole pieces in case they need to look dirty...

Really would love to do some torched chrome covers on this one but I really hate the sound of a HB with a cover (again superstitiously believing I can really tell the difference).

Not oil. Mineral Spirits...sorry about the confusion. Mineral spirits eventually will flash off after a few hours. The pictures are taken over the course of 3 days.

I always sand my joints then blow them off right before gluing them (even if it has only been a day since cutting).

A fresh joint is a strong joint. Titebond does not like old wood surfaces...

For epoxy joints I usually hit them with acetone before actually gluing them up (superstition).

Speaking of sanding, I'm surprised you left that spot by the treble cutaway.

That was a screw up where I slipped when using the bandsaw roughing it out. It's sanded but the cut is deeper than I was willing to sand back, the fact it stands out now doesn't bother me as when I spray the burst, it'll be invisible - covered by black.

The guitar looks beautiful as it is now, can't wait to see the burst.

Thanks for all the advice. Before I seen Xadioriderx wiring diagram I soldered the pots, jack and switch ready to drop into place and conect the pickups and ground wires. I also had mixed advice from google so I used the P90 diagram on the Iron Gear site. It if different form Xadioriderx diagram mainly for the Vol pot. I have the switch hot wire going to the top lug and then onto the tone pot with the hot output on the middle lug. Is this wrong or just a different way to do it.

Yes I have the P94 R and T set and will be wiring one black and one white to hum cancel as advised by Gigson. Although if it does turn out to be out of phase I'm not really sure I know what out of phase is

Here is a photo to explaine.

Be sure to separate the lead from the cap that is touching the pot side, otherwise that pot will also cut output instead of highs.

I really like the un-filled mahogany look.

Recessing the bridge to eliminate the neck angle is really common.

On a Les Paul or similar design (single cut) you think the carve would look too diferent or wierd? I was thinking this way, (no angle) would leave more material in the back of the joint so it would be easier to carve a smooth heel reminiscent of Gibson Alex Lifeson Axcess.

Another build that's been languishing in the vault since May of last year...had to rescue it from page 27 of the forum...sad. Not that anyone cares anymore, but I wanted to document the warp up.

So, I got off track on this one because I didn't have PUs that I wanted for it. I decided to go with a set of Vintage Series '62 Customs. Beveled Alnico 3, staggered poles, brass base plate and cloth wrapped wire. I have the bridge, neck ferrules and tuners due in today, so this one should finish up quickly...then on to new, exciting builds.
