  1. John - just "borrowed" your idea for my next neck. Trying out the "pyramid" shaped fretwire from SM this time .....

Thanks for sharing your ideers. :D

let me know how it goes I was looking at using those on a bass I'm building but haven't decided yet

  2. My insert in a block of wood worked beautifully.

never said in wouldn't, honestly I wish I had one of those inserts it's just I don't have the extra money for one right now and my technique works for me so yeah but it is a good idea what you did , you even saved some by not getting the caul for it

  3. But now the radius block has fret imprints and superglue all over it

No it doesn't get super glue on it, there might be a few drops but it doesn't get all over and I forgot to mention I build my own radius blocks but if you have just the couple dents in it it won't mess up your sanding shape. I use a spare block I don't use for sanding but I used to use the same blocks and nothing ever hapened with the sanding.

  4. What I'm going to do is buy just the press insert, then put that into a block of wood. I don't have a press or clamp, so I hammer the frets in. I figure this will give me a better application of force across the width of the fret instead of concentrating it into one place.

I just fill the slot with super glue then take a rubber tip hammer and push them in with that and slide the hammer across the fret pushing it in instead of hammering then take an extra radius block and squeeze clamp the fret in (I usually have three frets in before I clamp) let it dry a couple mins, move on and repeat. I find this is cheaper than buying press inserts and all that stuff and with this process I have only had to level the frets once (my first build) other than that the frets stay perfectly level, that is if the board is level to begin with.

Love this build though, its lookin good and I like that ebonizing technique I will have to try it sometime.

  5. Alright - some measured progress over the past few weeks (another way of saying that other things have been stealing my time!!!)....

Fretboard is radiused @ 28" and is now ready for tapering:

:D Thats pretty flat, I use 16" radius and thought that was flat enough lol. And what are you using for a bridge? I have seen bridges like this before but I never knew if they were built like that or if they are just single saddles of that sort.

  6. Maybe next build B) What would I exactly need to make one. I haven really think about making my own fretboard

before becoase pre made fretboard actualy cost less than fretboard woods. If you can make radius block I would like to

get 12 :D. Would you recomend some pick ups for my build, I need good 80s heavy pick ups, I tought that EMGs Hz4

would fit but you have played lot longer so you know better.

You would need a radius block obviosly and a fret saw and thats basically it send me a message when you get close to building one and i'll help you out a it

As for wood if you make a maple fretboard this one would be easy and just use a scrap slab thats basically what I do, or you could just buy a board foot (don't know what measurments are in finland for that sorry B) ) and you have enough wood for several fretboards

For pickups I would choose a Dimarzio super distortion, a friend of mine put one it a dean vendetta and I like the tone out of that. Isn't the HZ4 what Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom uses in his ESP? I pick out pickups for modern metal not 80s music :D So I duess I don't really know what bands tone you are trying to imitate I Like Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio best for pretty much anything for bass and six string, I have never played with EMG's before so can't help you there.

  7. I did bought that. I dont have tools to make fretboard and it was cheap also.

You should look into getting some tools or it. Making the fretboard is one of my favorite things to do in a build. I might be able to send you a radius block, message me with the sixe you want and il make one.

  8. I am still planing that. The woodworking course last only for one weekend and 8 hours per day so I am not sure does I have time to do carved top.

But those cutways will be carved for sure.

I soo your acustic project, looks very nice

there is a video on how to do an arch top pretty easily

Are you hand carving the cutaways?

And I am putting more pictures up of my acoustic and several electrics I am doing on my facebook page and on this site tonight so check back later. :D

  9. This should be a very cool build.

Im gearing up for a double neck myself, never done one before. should be a nice challenge

Hey lets get a whole bunch of us doin them & then do a DNGOTM (Double Neck Guitar Of The Month) when thers about 8-10 of them ready to go ! ha ha ha.

HAHA sounds good i'll have to start one.
