  1. Okay...I started a fretless project, and I have some questions. I got an acoustic guitar from a friend for 20 dollars, and it really doesn't sound that bad to be so cheap. Anyhow, after the fretless thread on here, I couldn't help it, so I pulled the frets out. I'm not entirely sure what kind of wood the fretboard is, but it's really light (in color and density), and it was just spraypainted black. I'm looking for a nice ebony veneer for the fretboard. Will that work? I was thinking of gluing the ebony veneer on (if anyone knows where I can get some that's not very streaky I'd appreciate it), and then inlaying small pieces of maple where the frets should be as markers. After that, I was planning on putting some kind of finish on...maybe a polyurethane? I've heard that they dry really hard. I've never worked with it, so does anyone have any pointers for working with it, or any suggestions for a different strategy.

I was also planning on putting a figured maple veneer on the top (it's plywood, and the veneer that is original isn't very pretty. How would I go about putting that on? Is there any possible way to avoid pulling the bridge off? I'm assuming to put the veneer on all I have to do is sand off the finish, and glue it on like in the tutorial on the main site (thought the tutorial is for a solidbody). Also, I'm gonna do a figured maple headstock overlay, and contemplating doing the back and sides of the body with ebony (if I can find enough), or mahogany or something similar. Maybe even figured maple. I could add some dye to the laquer and darken up the back and sides, or I could just make it all really light..I'm just brainstorming here, so any ideas would be appreciated.

  2. Could you just carve out your inlay design on the fretboard, fill the hole with acrylic, and then put LEDs under that? And then put an on/off mini-toggle switch on the guitar body, with the battery in the control cavity. Then somehow rout into and through the neck and wire it up like that. That would be pretty awesome instead of making the whole FB out of acrylic.

  3. How are you planning on converting the bolt-on neck to use it for a neck-thru? I can't think of any feasible way to do that. It's not really a custom guitar if you use all premade pieces :D. I'd say just build it all by yourself if you're going for a neckthrough. If you're gonna cut the body in half, you're gonna have to take wood out of the middle so it's not too wide.

  4. I'm having a similar problem with my strat refinish. After removing the paint with a heat gun (which left some gouges...oops), I sanded the body down a bit, and apparently a piece of something got on the paper, and now I have a fairly shallow (but really long) scratch across the front of the body. I guess I'm just gonna sand it out. I need to get some new paper. What grit should I get to sand down the best without being too rough? I was thinking 180 grit, but could I use something rougher to hog more wood out as long as I still work up to a 320 grit?

  5. I joined the board like a long time ago, but I didn't pay any attention to it. Then I came and found this awesome site, but what's this? My screen name's taken? Tried my password and then remembered joining :D . Haven't built any yet, but I'm working on customizing a Strat and asking lots of questions. Apparently I'm screwed though, cause my first guitar is gonna be the Carriburst...I hope practice really does make perfect.
