  1. Finally... An actual answer... Cheers. That's just what i thought. Although i did enjoy reading through some of the more amusing comments.
  2. Right... Well yeah, i want to know what the best glue for sticking neck laminates together is/? I spent near 240GBP on some quarter sawn maple and walnut for my necks (Enough to make 5 necks as i had to buy in bulk) So my question is... What glue should i use? I know the standard go to is Titebond, And if that's the best... Titebond 1, 2 or 3? Thanks, Mike.
  3. As this is in essence a "glue" thread... Can i ask... What's the best glue? I'm assuming Titebond... Right? (For gluing necks and bodies)
  4. As far as i can tell there is no difference, A super-strat i think refers to that general shape of guitar body. Although i wouldn't quote me on that... But all guitars shaped like RG's really seem to be called "super strat" style guitars. :S
  5. Yeah... It's based on my RG, But it's not an RG lol... So i called it a super-strat. Thanks
  6. Right, I'm missing a few pics of the in-between work as they're on my other PC... But this is the progress so far. You can clearly see i have more sanding and shaping to do... But here it is anyways... Hope you enjoy! From the top is pretty much the same as it was so far. Few pics of the back contours... This part still needs more sanding... I did this because on my Ibanez the 24th fret is a bit painful to reach because of the sharp back. Well, That's it for now until i get some more sandpaper. Should hopefully be able to buy the materials for the neck in the next few months. (My PC broke so i had to spend guitar money on getting a new one ) Mike x
  7. Hey, Thanks for taking the time to post on here... And I'm fully aware of your concerns as i have them too. But i don't have the money to go out and buy more parts to practice on. And although this will be my first build... It is by far not the first time working with wood and all the most common tools used in building guitars (I used to do woodshop) And also, don't worry about the quilted maple... It's going to be a veneer as i want to keep as much mahogany for tone as i can. I also have an Ibanez RG Thru-Neck which will be my guide throughout the whole project. The body and neck will be to the exact dimensions as the RG... As long as i take my time and don't rush anything. So sizing should not be a problem. It's just the curvature on the top of the body and the headstock that will be different. I'm deffinately going to take my time with this, i've been planning it for about 2 years now and finally taking the plunge... So i'm going to be extremely careful with all measurements and cutting/planing, everything! Also as i have a guitar i find amazingly comfertable to play, i can take constant measurements to make sure i'm 100% on target the whole way though the build. And as for your fretting concerns... I will most likely be buying a pre-slotted fret board as this will be the first time building a guitar... So i'm not going to risk something that needs to be spot on. P.S. And as to your abalone response... I wont be using REAL abalone lol... That's just way too much worry on top of the build it's self. It will be a white and abalone stripped plastic binding. You know the stuff that looks like the real deal. Anyways, I've gone on enough at you about this Thanks for your reply and i'll be taking into account your concerns dude! Mike x
  8. You are new so let me tell you something...we need progress pics! Good luck on the build, it´s very ambitious but it sounds great. Plan every step of the way. Don't worry, As my first project I'm going to be documenting every step and being unnecessarily cautious when it comes to all the steps because i don't want my first build to be my last because it went wrong and put me off! Should be starting on the body soon so i may have something for everyone to see soon! And i agree, It is ambitious... But then again I've never been someone to do anything by halves! Lol. Thanks!
  9. Thanks dude! But i think i'm gonna have to go straight into it and do a Thru-Neck, I can't play Bolt-On or Set-Necks... Just doesn't feel right to me, I've gone though plenty lol! I'll just have to make the neck and see how it goes before attaching the wings. Could always make another if it goes horribly wrong anyways i suppose. Thanks for your advise! And after thinking about it... The only thing that would be made easy by converting a Set-Neck or Bolt-On neck to a Thru-Neck would be not having to route the truss rod cavity xD Mike x
  10. OK... So further to my last post, I'm going all out and building the Thru-Neck from scratch! So... Sharon as the guitar will forever be known, Shall be a 24 Fret, Thru-Neck, Quilted Maple (Dark Purple Stain) Black everything else (with the exception of hardware as i havn't quite decided on that yet, 5 piece neck sexy beast of a guitar! Mahogany Body: 5 Piece Neck: Maple/Wenge (Unless anyone has any better suggestions? Bearing in mind it's build for tone, not looks) One Pick-Up: Bridge Curved Top: NOT carved top, Just a nice curve to it so the Quilted Maple will catch the light nicely Fixed Trem Bridge: 6-String Of Course! Not sure about binding though, Pretty sure i want some around the body... But don't know what colour... Maybe Abalone?! Help? If anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them... Also if anyone would like to see this project come together let me know and i'll post the whole sexy thing from start to finish! (Providing I don't kill myself in the process) Mike x
  11. OK... So here's my problem... I'm planning on making my own guitar, Already have a sweet bit of Mahogany for the body, But i want to make a thru-neck like my Ibanez, Because... Well... It's a hell of alot nicer than any bolt-on or set-neck guitar i've ever played! Now, what I'm wondering... Could i convert a bolt-on neck to a thru-neck? As this is my first one i don't particually feel comfertable starting a neck from scratch. But you can quite easily buy a bolt on neck fairly cheaply, but to buy a thru-neck will run me about 200-300 quid! So... Imagine a 3-Piece neck... Take off the side parts so you're left with the one piece in the middle, add 2 much longer pieces each side, and another piece to fill the gap in the lower middle part... If I'm making sense here... Say I'm using a nice strong wood for the extended parts, like wenge. So the wenge will run down the full length of the neck, from headstock to the end of the body... And then just shape the wenge. Think it'll work? (Saves having to route the truss-rod groove, And the main bulk of the neck will run the entire way down the body... So would be strong enough, right?) Let me know, And thanks to all who reply in advance! Mike x
