looking good...I love the neck. I've got some maple I want to do this with...where are you getting the black stringers? Is that dyed veneer or ebony?

Thanks, paulie. I got the heel blocks trimmed down today so the necks are fitted completely, and all the angles check out. I started on the headstock binding, which is going to be a slow process, lots of miters and rosewood bending.

Delays...I've been doing design work on a commission (which will hopefully show up here soon), then I was out of town for a couple of weeks. Working on these when I can, but I've done a bad job of taking pictures. The heels still need to be trimmed down. The top of the neck will only be flush at the corner of the pocket where it meets the upper bout. The angle jig worked great and the necks are tight. I hope to get the headstock binding done this weekend, and then I can glue the fretboards on. Here's where they sit:

I'm going to rear route the whole thing, for simplicity. I hate having to remove a pickguard. I adjusted the headstock a hair, and there will be plenty of string clearance. I'll hopefully shape the headstocks this week. Here's a few progress pics, headplates glued, truss rod installed and access shaped. Cherry backstrap bent and glued. Fretboards slotted and inlayed. Inlay is white Pearlyx and Canarywood.

Our Souls, I'll make sure I double check that before I cut the headstock...I drew it out on the computer and it looked ok, but I'll make sure it'll work, as it does look tight. I can always move the tuner positions a hair. The pickguard is optional at this point, this will all be rear routed. I like the look of two knobs on and two off, though. These will both be mostly natural, with perhaps a subtle burst, and I'm thinking about tortoiseshell for the pickguard.

WezV, it just goes to show no matter how much time you spend trying to make something unique, it's probably been done. I've never even heard of a Washburn P4. Oh well, I think there's enough difference here. The overall shape is similar, but the curves are all a little bit different. These'll be flat on top with a couple of contours, not carved.

Here's a drawing...not sure about the fretboard inlay yet...I've got some thinking to do on that.

Here's a new design I'm working on and am going to see how doing two at once increases efficiency. I've historically done a terrible job of posting build threads, so I'm going to try to do a better job here. One of these is a one-piece Fijian mahogany blank my brother gave me for Christmas and made me promise to keep for myself. The other is sapele and ash with walnut veneers. Both will have cherry necks and rosewood fretboards and headplates. They will have Gotoh tuners and Gotoh 510 wraparound bridges. More soon!

This is more or less based on a 58 V, with the old type of neck joint. Obviously, there weren't any semi-hollow ones. Reverse headstock is my design. Customer didn't want a truss rod cover, so the headstock access is painted black, as are the bevels on the headstock.

How's that Gotoh wraparound? I'm thinking about using that for my new build(s). It looks slick and seems easy to use. Are the studs installed straight across the centerline?

Hey everybody, I'm working on a guitar for a friend right now. It's got an angled headstock and he doesn't want a truss rod cover. The headstock will be painted white. What's the cleanest way to cut the truss rod access and make it look nice? I'm using an LMI two way rod. Any advice would be appreciated.

I wondered about that too, and it's what kept me from doing a burst on the cherry top I did, but I think it'll be an interesting experiment. Perhaps because the bursted edge is not opaque it will let enough UV through to darken the edge as well? I want to see it in a couple years.

sounds a lot like maple. My second build was a chambered maple body with a cherry top and neck and rosewood board. i think it sounds great, and cherry is great to work with.

I'm a big fan of cherry for a neck, but walnut is also great. I've thought about using apple as a drop top on an electric if I can find big enough pieces to bookmatch.

Nice! I'm all for refinishing and making junk guitars playable. I have 90% of a Peavey Mystic body that I hope to eventually get around to stripping down and fixing. I also am not usually a fan of camo paint, but this is very well done.

yeah, if you're overseas I can see how that might be an issue.
