This years build is going to be a 24 fret strat with gold plated EMG 81/85 pickups, laminated neck blank and a angled headstock. After a lot of thinking I have decided to go with the Cocobolo drop top that has a little owl and fox in the figure.
First off is to square up the drop top edges ready for gluing. I check the fit by viewing the joint and if you cant see day light then its a good fit. Clamp up and have the long wait.
I'm at that stage when I'm thinking about what I can build for 2012. I'm thinking of doing a 24 fret strat with gold plated EMG 81/85 pickups, fixed bridge.
I'm at the stage of putting wood combinations together and came across these Cocobolo bookmatched drop tops that I've had in stock for over a year and its a shame not to put good wood to a good use. . The trouble is which one? I think number 4 is the leader but have decided to canvas the opinions of Project Guitar members.
So here goes tops 1 to 4.
Guitar2005, I dry sanded using Siasoft foam backed pads from 320 to 2500 grit then I used a foam pad in a cordless drill and burnished with 3M Finnesse-It. The lacquer is Morrells 2pac acid catyist "440". They do nitro but they call it old style lacquer.
All I need is a truss rod cover and a control cavity cover then it will be complete.
Thanks for your advice Xadioriderx. So glad I dont have to start changing it.
I just need to shim the neck because the neck pocket is too deep then I should get it wired up and get some strings on
I have a half started build of a Ibanez ST50 with a Bubinga body and neck. The body weight is 6kg so I think the total weight is going to be about 8 to 9kg. I dont care as I'm a sit on the sofa with headphones player. I dont stand up or play gigs. I dont play gigs because I'm a crap player
I plan to finish it with Danish oil. Also due to its weight I'm hoping it will sustain for days.
Great build by the way
I'm onto the wiring stage. I'm using Gibson P94's as a pair. They have black, white and a green wire and also a braid. I'm a bit stuck. I want to wire so that the matched pair will act as a humbucker when selected together. 3 way switch, 1 vol 1 tone. Any diagrams anybody?
Tried to fit the pickups today and found that the pickup cavities are about 0.5mm too small on the length so the aluminium tape is out and the chisel has gone to work.
Do things ever go right for my builds?
Here are some photos of the pickups I'm using. They are Gibson P94 humbucker sized P90's
If the shielding is not needed in the pick up cavities then I'll take it out as I dont want the potential to affect the tone.
OH SOMEBODY JUST TELL ME! IN OR OUT
PLEASE
Taken your advice Dark Avenger and let the body cure a bit more. In the mean time I've completed the neck. Here it is. Incase you all had forgot its a Goncarlo Alves and Wenge laminate.
Lacquer job complete. Have to say I'm a bit disapointed in the results this time. I wanted a glass like surface that was so mirrow like you could do your hair in it but alas its not. Nevermind >
I was going to build a little guitar for my daughter but a lad at work just come up to me and said "your that lad who messes with guitars" and handed me a brand new little 3/4 size strat copy. He said his kids asked for it for Christmas and by August had not even taken it out of the box.
there you go.
PS my daughter picked it up once and no longer wants to know.
Thats kid for you.
I know xadioriderx but when you see it in the flesh the grains in the Wenge centre stipe were deep and took your eye off the great spalt figure. What I did was to spot fill the pores with lacquer using a lab pipette. next I sanded it back hoping that would be it but 5 coats must have only been microns thick because I sanded it with a 400 grit Siasoft pad and it di not take long for little bits of bare wood to start showing.
Note to myself: I must remember all the mistakes for the next build.
I forgot to use a grain filler. I thought I would get away with it and it would fill with lacquer but no so out comes the sand paper and now I'm back to re-doing the stain and lacquring.
You were right dpm99
The highest grit size I have is 1500 grit. I would like to go to 2000 but it would mean switching to a paper and I dont want to switch manufacturer or type of system.
More googling is required to find 2000 grit foam pads.
Thanks
Just a quick update on the templates. I've had 2 new sets cut. Still Strat and tele although the teles are selling faster than the strats. I though it would be the other way round. Anyway the 1st set the neck pockets are now tight. The 2nd set the neck pocket is smaller than the neck by 0.15mm so you can sand the neck to fit.
PM me if anybody is interested.
I'll give it a week then sand it back then up the grits to 1500 then will review the way the lacqure has filled the pores. I'll decide then.
Just for info I use siasoft pads. They are foam backed. 320,400,600,800,1000 and finish with 1500.
I ment to say Tightbond original. I had just emailed something about Polyurathane and it was on my mind.
Tightbond not Poly but I still clean the surface with meths first.
