Scatter Lee: Well crafted but I’m not sure why the space between the neck and the neck pickup looks so much different then the rest of the finish on the guitar.
could be the neck is quarter sawn and the body is flat sawn, the neck wood was a little darker than the body, but mostly the angle of the sun making a shadow
-
Here's a quickie sound clip of the guitar... V-Amp2 directly into the computer.
Clean dry each pickup, clean wet each pickup, lead distortion each pickup, rhythm distortion each pickup. Nothin' fancy and pretty sloppy 'cause I gotta go out the door in a hurry... Oh yeah. When I first string a guitar up, I start out with 9s to get things to settle in gently.

real nice, now how did you insert that sound clip?

Great Build. I don't know if anyone else has asked, but is your shop in an old indoor pool? I keep seeing a pool edge on the ground in your shots.
yes it is, kidney shaped pool filled with dirt
-
I just have to ask. Is your shop built over a filled in pool? It sure appears so.
yeah I'm in a poolhouse and it's filled in
It is so funny I am building a lap steel and was trying to avoid the violin shape but I just couldn't even though mine really is not true to a real violin. I love that you just went for it. Kudos!
one day i was looking at pics of strativarius violins and pulled up a les paul blueprint in photoshop and stuck the violin into the les paul outline and printed it out, just something that got into my head, there is a build thread for the first one over at MLP http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/100136-scattervarius.html
-
i'll be back on the scattervarius II real soon, need to finish a couple other builds first, it's still hangin in there, it dont hurt to let the lacquer cure good either
-
This is one of the coolest builds I've seen in some time. I like the Scattervarius II more than the first one...the maple top looks much better. The "Prophet" model I offer is a kind of "Super strat meets violin" ...(more on the strat side). Your design is the perfect mix of a LP & a violin. And,the tailpiece is the icing on the cake! I may try to do the edge bead on an upcoming Prophet build.
Here is a Prophet I did in 2008:
real nice carves on that

yeah I'm in a poolhouse and it's filled in
-
Is that a fret on the tailpiece? Also, do you use ferrules, or do you let the wood/finish do the work?
yes thats a fret on the tailpiece, i dont want the strings digging into the ebony, and i'll drill a ferrule block out of brass for the back
-
did some shaping on the tailpiece today
sanded down the body one more time and gave it another coat of clear
-
worked a little on the nut today, i glued on a bone nut blank and a piece of ebony left over from the fretboard
took it to the belt sander
and ended up with this
-
I'll be watching, jigs, forms and moulds, cant get enough of them
-
my point is that a lot of what you do can be applied to les paul style builds for something original and still very fun and worthwhile. we know the 52 was a flawed animal, to me that makes it worthy of messing with... imagine if gibson had decided to do it the way you do it with your through body stringing instead of the development of the tom and tailpiece
but yes - i do like a early gibson copy. here is my 55 junior... not exact in any way but incorporates the way i build guitars into a 'replica' i am happy to put my name on
nice! gotta love them Jr's
-
i drilled for bridge studs today too
this bridge will do until i make an ebony/bone one
i'm working on this one too, more of a priority
all scratch built too, one piece body, one piece neck
-
nice jig - i like that you have done string through with the tailpiece... and done it so neatly.
still not sure about the whole violin guitar thing but i do like the way you aproach it and look forward to seeing a LP style build with these techniques... a 52 LP with through body stringing would be awesome
i'm in the middle of a 59 burst build now and a custom jr. the world is knee deep in les paul copys, i made the violin shape just for something different for myself and have something to sell without any legal trouble, lot of people dig them so i'll keep making them as long as people out there want one

I can not believe you couldn`t get $2000 for your master peice... i think that price would have been an insult , it looks at least double the value, that was the month I discovered Project Guitar, and when the page opened for the first time, I never expected to see what I saw, there is some crazy designs on this forum, and some very proud builders, well done
thanks, i did sell it right after the auction, i needed a quick sale for holiday money and other builds, or i would have held onto it a little longer, maybe i'll do better on the next one

i made this jig to drill string thru holes
use the dremel with the base to drill straight holes
like that
flip it over and do the other side
like that
string thru holes came out real nice
-
got out the tailpiece templates today and made a ebony tailpiece
lined up the template on the body
and routed out a spot for it
nice fit
gave it a 12" radius
i'll carve more on it later
-
I had some time today to route for humbuckers
-
drilled tuner holes today
shaped the back of the neck
got the neck glued in
-
How do you like that plunge router rig for the Dremel? Thinking about buying one, just looking for some feedback on it.
it works good for some things but is not that great, lot of slop even when everything is tightened up
Oh god. I joined this forum just in time to see this beauty take shape. You sir, have some serious skill, and nerves to do that bit of freehand routing. Whenever I do any amount of routing, all I can think of after finishing is grabbing a beer.
yeah i take blood pressure medicine for that
