  1. What kind of paint are you going to use? Spray paint? If so you might want to get the clear Effex paint from Dupli-color. I'm sure there are other brands that make the same thing. After you've painted with the emerald green base coat, then use this to add a small amount of glitter, sparkle to your finish. If your going to use professional automotive paint, you can buy different sparkle, glitter to mix into your clear coat also.

I was kinda hoping that I wouldnt have to paint it, that I could buy one first if they are available. I havent thought about the ind of paint yet. And besides, I have never painted a body in my life.

  2. I'm looking to start building another custom and I got an idea of what I want but I have very weird taste.

I'm looking for a strat body in an emerald green finish. Imagine a translucent dark green finish with some sparkle in it.

Sounds like, either rare or non existent to me. But I would like to ask the pros before I start looking into painting it myself.

SIDE NOTE: If I am right by saying it does not exist can you give me some tips on how I would go on to paint this?

  3. First of, I would like to thank everybody for reading my "epic tale" and giving me GREAT suggestions, I seriously do have a lot to think about.

I dont know wheter I would like to reroute some stuff to accomodate my neck, because I LOVE my bridge for some odd reason, it just looks so weird and rare, I've never seen anything like it.

second this guitar yardsale im always going on about is in Maryland at Make n' music. Might be worth the trip if only your in the tristate area, but otherwise lol dont even bother.

Thank you again, you guys rock.

  4. I would like to get my hands on another project guitar, but I don't know where to get one.

The most obvious choice is ebay, but as we all know its almost hard to be secure in a transaction at ebay, knowing those damn snipers with 5 seconds left to go eh :D ?

Where I live there is a biannual rock n roll yardsale with vintage parts, guitars etc, but....thats biannual.

Another problem I should bring up, I'm a teen with no job, so I only have about 150 bucks to spend.

Sooo, sites, suggestions.........free money even? (jk jk)

    Thank you

  5. why don't you just move the bridge to accomodate the neck's scale lenght? What type of bridge is it, and do you know if the bridge needs to be moved forward or back? Moving it back would be less labor intensive.

    peace,

    russ

not possible. The bridge is very unique, its like a bigsby/ tailpiece end. The body basically has a huge hole to accomdate the unusal tremleo piece.

  6. Thank you all so much.

I am actually thinking of continuing but the fact is I'm a teen without a job and no constant cash flow. So dropping 300 bucks on a new neck would be pretty powerful.

I learned now that it wasn't the body that was the problem but the neck. The neck was not right to scale with the body. So there IS a chance that I can get it to work If I can get a new neck for the body.

Anybody know how I can find a neck for a body? Like measuring from the bridge to the pocket or sommmetthing?

  7. A while ago I joined and started posting questions, usually focused in electronics, about a mustang/jag stang hybrid guitar. Tons of people were very courteous to me, and now here is my "saga".

I ended up buying it at a guitar yardsale thingy, and I thought it would be fun and an easy fix.

    I was wrong haha.

I learned that this guitar was made overseas and did NOT follow any Fender/Gibson standards. So I spent a couple of saturdays searching Home Depot and hobby stores searching for screws that would fit, which I finially did fine, that were probably one of a kind. After that, I made a HUGE purchase from allparts probably amounting to 200 bucks. Included was a pickguard, sliding switches, knobs, wires, pots, etc etc.

When I finially got it......not one single item fit. The pickguard was way too small, the pots were too. The one lucky thing was the tuners in which, they ended up being for a tweleve string guitar, but because the width of the headstock was sooo huge it fit perfectly.

So then I began on constructing a pickguard from scratch.

Now you have to realize that I am a begginer at guitar building, and I would have to say that I'm probably getting in over my head here. I did fairly well with cutting it out, but when cutting the holes inside it, I made the pickup hole too big. I got frustrated and I abandoned the project for a month.

Later on, I went back to the samel biannual guitar yardsale and looked at the necks. There, I found out that the neck that came with it was a very very rare size, and I would need to get a new neck in order to get the intonation right. Which meant that the only thing that actually went "right" (the tuners) would have to change. Not too mention I would have to drop another 300 bucks on a neck.

So eventually I just gave up.

Looking back on it now, I think its kinda funny how it all worked out. Unfortunatly I got a whole bunch of parts now that I cant return.

Anyway, I would like to thank everybody who helped me through this endevour. Although this project failed (pretty bad), I learned from the best (you guys) and from mistake (myself).

  8. I'm sorry to be asking this, because this is so stupid.

I have never played or owned a single coil pickup guitar ever. All i know is the dual humbuckers.

To cut to the chase, I know some dual humbucking guitars have 2 and 2 knobs (2 volume knobs and 2 tone knobs) which allow for different settings on the bridge and neck pick up (yes I know you know this, I'm getting to my point).

On a strat, it has 3 knobs, one volume and two tone. My question is, do the two tone knobs allow you to have two different tones on the bridge and the neck, like some dual humbucker guitars do? If not, what does the second tone knob do?

My dilemma is that I prefer single coil sound over humbuckers, but I like having indepent control with all the knobs and all. So, if somebody would be kind to help me out, it could definitly help me.

    Thank you.

  9. To answer some of your questions:

Brand of guitar: A&C customized (no big name)

Model- Takes after a mustang/jag stang (two single coils with two sliding switches above and the control plate below)

    Sorry no pics with me

Bridge- I kept the old bridge that it orginally came with. I really like, its like nothing I have seen before (which could be, because it never caught on heh)

Neck- I have not really taken an actualy straight edge and looked at it. But I have raised it and looked at it. It looks fairly straight meaning, it looks pretty perfect as is.

String Height- When I say how far the strings are from the neck I'm reffering to the frets.

    Miscellaneous Info:

It would be easy to imagine this guitar just like a PRS or a SG with the stop tail piece and the bridge slightly above it. Except really not that fancy haha. So I have had to raise the bridge up because of the fret buzz. Im gonna really try to post some pics on here, because its hard to explain it with words. Also I'm really sorry I couldn't be more help, the guitar in question is at my dads house, but I will see it tommorow actually.

    More Input please? Thank you.

EDIT: BTW I would like to add in response to Curtis'es reply that my guitar is not electronically operationally. Meaning that Basically I have the body, neck, tuners, bridge, all the hardware but I have not installed any of the pick ups, selectors, pots etc. So basically imagine your guitar, but without the...guts.

  10. Ok, I bought this old guitar to work on. Im almost done, and I finially got the bridge and the tuners working. So i installed some test strings on there to test the action. Well just as fate would have it, I get alot of buzzing around the top frets. So I raise the bridge, test it, still more buzz, raise it, test, buzz. I basically had to raise it to the top to get rid of it. And as you know, when it is that high, its almost impossible to play well.

I've looked around the neck, up at the top, where you would find a truss rod cover, or a bullet thing on a strat, none whatsoever. Checked the body cavity, didnt find any there either. Does this mean the truss rod opening is on the boot/heel of the neck? Therefore I would have to remove the neck and do it that way? Or is it even possible that there is no truss rod opening, and it is as is? I do have the opportunity to get a neck REAL cheap on an upcoming guitar sale at one of the stores near me, so I need to act fast or not at all.

    Thank You.

  11. 1)depends on the pickup cover, take the picup out from the guitar and figure it out, its not too hard to figure some stuff out on your own :D

2)i am not sure what you mean on this question, but i think your saying if the neck is made for a 25.5" scale and your body was set up for a 24.75" scale what would happen if you still played on it?? well, it wouldnt intonate, so it would sound like garbage

3)very carefully heat the prong of the pot and attach the lead to it with solder, too much heat will ruin your pot, not enough heat and you wont get proper penetration (is that the word i want?)

4)i dont have a "favorite" guitarist per se, but, i enjoy listening to Kerry King, Randy Rhoads, Nuno Bettencourt, Kirk Hammet, Steve Vai, etc....

    Good Luck

    Curtis

In repsonse to your 2nd answer, about the neck. So basically even the slightest amount that is off, will ruin it? Even with a shim?

  12. Ok my first question is:

#1) How do you change the cover on covered pick ups. Like lets say I wanted to change it from chrome to gold, how would i do that?

#2) (these neck questions were on another post of mine, I later asked more questions and never got a reply so I decided to move them here) If the scale length of a neck of a guitar is not equal, what would happen if i still continued to play on it?

#3) How do solder capacitors to pots? (kinda a difficult question to answer but please try).

#4) Just for fun: Who is your favorite guitarist

  13. Yes I do have pics of this guitar, however the pics/camera/guitar are all at my dads house. SO i cant put them on now heh sorry. Also I have no clue if the measurements are right, because, yet again it is at my dads house.

Anyway, so If the scale length is not correct, and thereby I would have to put a new neck on, my questions are...

    1) Because I'm a teen, strapped for cash. Can I still use the neck until I get a new one?

    2) And Im not sure where my saddle on an electric guitar is (i know where it is on an acoustic) but I kind of have a stop bar tail piece on this guitar and then a bridge. I will try to post some pictures.

    3) If the neck does seem to work, would it still be wise to maybe change the neck at a later point, to get a more fitting neck?

    Thank you for your time.

  14. Ok, so i got this used guitar that i am fixing up. I realized now that the neck doesnt fit so perfectly into the pocket (just for reference, i have never seperated the neck from th ebody since it has been in my ownership, i dont know wheter it has been by the previous owner though). Anyway, there is a small space from the body to the neck. Maybe about 1/8 wide. I was wondering if thise seperation can cost me any interfence, while playing (buzzing etc?). One of my dads friends told me to put a wooden shimmy in there. Would that help. Any other ideas? Thank you.

  15. If your cavities are shielded, using shielded cable in addition is redundant and a lot of extra effort and expense. Unless it's a problem child, like a semi-hollow with no access to the control cavity, it's easier (and at least as effective) to shield the cavity. For shielding advice. see Guitar Nuts for more info than you'll ever need.

Thank you so much, the site helped alot. Just one more quick question, what do you mean by cavity and a cavity being shielded?

  16. I suggest shielded wire everywhere too, even for single-wire connections. For single-wire connections, solder one side of the shielding braid to the ground.

The gauge doesn't matter in the least actually. Just take whatever is reasonably good quality, and avoid too large gauges, because it will take up more space and will look ugly. But really, gauge doesn't matter. Especially in a guitar, where wires are all pretty short and the currents going through them are very tiny. Given the high output impedance of most pickups, and the length of the wires in the electronic cavity, wire resistance doesn't matter either; so you could really use very small gauges - but don't use too small, because it would break easily.

So don't fixate on a precise gauge, just use your good sense - and shielded wire if possible.

Does that cloth covering on wire count as being shielded?

  17. OK, so like i bought this old really screwed up guitar. Gonna fix it up. However when i bought it the neck (which is bolt on) had two screws missing. The two that were in were ajacent (diagonal) from each other. I was realy scared about that if i left it like that for much longer that the neck could suffer some damage (if not already). I dont know if the neck moved around in the "pocket" or anything. So my first question is, that having those two screws diagonal from each other, could there be any negative consequences?

Got that? ok on with the story, so i bought some new screws, put them in, but they were too long >.< I ended up stripping two screw heads trying to get them in. The heads are about...1/16 (which actually makes a difference) above the neck plate. So my second question is, did I install anymore damage upon this guitar you think?

Yes I do plan to get shorter screws (Note: before I took the old screws out I put th two new screws in the holes where there were none, so the neck never came off.)
