  1. I've always been under the impression that all pickups are spaced the same, unless they have that little label of "F-Spaced" on them.

Most of the time, the neck and bridge models have different output levels and voicings. At least the Dimarzio series do, if you go and look at the Breed, Blaze, and Evolution sets.

  2. The volume control on my Ibanez 540S has always been a bit stiff feeling, it kills any possibility of using it for volume swells, etc. Does anyone know a way to loosen it up?

WD-40 might do something for it... I've never tried though, can't tell that it's 100% safe.

soon i have to begin another piece of coursework for my music tech course (arrangement II)

this involves taking an existing song and changing it completely...it can be any song on general release, and must be no longer than 3minutes in length..

i'm planning on an acoustic version of something , but not sure what..

    so, two questions:

1....any ideas for songs that i could do that wouldn't sound crappy as an acoustic song?

2...any general tips for making a reasonably heavy song into an acoustic number

any help would be greatly appreciated....

    dan

(btw, so far i'm thinking of an acoustic version of where is my mind by the pixies)

    :D

If you can play it, Green Tinted Sixties Mind would sound awesome. Or some of Elton John's stuff would translate well.

  4. 3. If you're using double stick tape with the templates, put a decent amount of pressure on them to prevent slipping. I like to use a clamp to press it down (remove the clamp before routing). It makes it more difficult to remove the template but that's kinda the idea if you know what I mean. Nothing worse than a moving template - been there and done that - never want to again.

Double stick tape with enough pressure will work wonders, and will go far beyond clamps. More wieght the merrier: your best option is to sit on it, or push down with your hands and put all your weight on top of the template.

  5. What constitutes "good" lyrics anyway? Saying the most with the least amount of words? It mostly depends on the listener's perspective and how they interpret a songwriters lyrics. You can say, "Yeah, my wife left me and my dog got hit by a diesel" or "Woke up this morning, my dog was dead." If that really happened to you then I guess you can identify with what the writer was trying to get across = good lyrics. But to someone else it could be meaningless.

    In a word: opinion.

For me, I like Alice Cooper. Just about every time I hear him, it sounds like he's singing my life story.

  6. .... there's no Clapton version of CG in the allmusic database either.  And Williams' original one was exclusively classical guitar.

As a (very) young child, I clearly remember seeing Mason and Glen Campbell playing Classical Gas on television, just two nylon string acoustics. It was one of the reasons I took up guitar in the first place. The single had orchestral backing. If Clapton has ever recorded it, it's the best-kept secret in rock'n'roll. Surprise, another internet tabster that got something wrong. :D

Interesting... I've heard the orchestral version on the radio, but I've never been able to find it for download...

  7. these are actually in order:

    1. classical gas - clapton

    Umm... that's Mason Williams.

actually, clapton made a version that didn't involve instrumental input. it was pure classical guitar. if your into downloading, search for his version and see the differance. if you want a link to a tab of his version, go here.

i can only assume that he made a version of his own.

That appears to be the same as the Mason Williams one... there's no Clapton version of CG in the allmusic database either. And Williams' original one was exclusively classical guitar.

  8. Best- Dave Brubeck last June.  His drummer, at about age 70ish, could play as well, if not better than, Mike Portnoy.  He got up on the stage with nothing but the instruments and microphones, compacted in the middle of a huge stage (Eastman Theater), and proceeded to give the best show I've ever seen.  I don't care how much pyro you put on a stage, how much production you throw into that, no show (of any form) will ever top what came out of those four guys that night.

Worst- One year I got dragged to a Christian-rock festival.  Some of the bands were good, but on the other hand, some weren't so good.

    Let me guess...Creation West?

    Yeah, I went in 01.

Kingdom Bound... out at Darien Lake.

  9. The "jigajigajigajiga" It's called "The Raygun Effect."

So that was the toy gun making that noise? OK, for some reason I thought that was used on a different song. No wonder I couldn't come close to reproducing it. Thanks!

No, I think what he's saying is that it sounds like a toy raygun, but can be imitated on guitar. When I first heard it on Rebel Yell, I thought it was a sample dropped in... anyway.

  10. That was a comcination of a harmonizer, an echo and something else, which I forget. I read it once a way long time in Guitar World (Steve on the cover talking about the Atomic Playboys disk). I might have it at home. If not, it's at my parents' house, and I won't have ready access to it for a good long while.

I'm guess that he probably had a touch of chorus on it as well...
