I'm been admiring myka's dragonfly guitars and am intrigued with the bartolini pickups. anyone know the best place to pick them up??? a search of this site and the internet was not to helpful.

You're right not quite what I had in mind but interesting none the less. I found some small decorative brass hinges that may work for my purposes. It may be a while, but when I'm done I'll post some pics.

someone has to have tried using an off the rack strap hinge rather than building your own....??

I had seen that before when I searched to see if this subject had come up before. Myka's tutioral by far the most helpful on this issue and great to read in general. I not sure about my ablility to do that kind of drilling into a small piece of brass. actually I'm not even sure where to get a small piece of brass I figured that I would ultimately end up trying to make my own, but I thought that before I started that process I'd see if there was a hinge out there somewhere specifically made for guitar tails.

any suggestion on after market hinges for use in making an ebony tail piece. That just seem to be a better way to attach rather than the cable around the endpiece.

anyone out there making there own??? or are some specifically made for this purpose?? does not seem to be much out there

actually i don't have any lacewood. it was just a thought I had. I thought that since its figured like maple it might finish the same way.

i guess I will have to find some scrape lacewood and give it a shot.

thanks for the input. I recently saw a picture of bodies a had just finished shaping cutting the binding rabet and had a rough carve which left a flat top with a sharp edge ( like a little island on top) sloping down to the binding.

I have a feeling this was cut on a cnc router, but it made me start thinking...... which is always dangerous

can lacewood be finished like a flame maple?? ie... stain dark.... sand back.... and then stain again????

a search did not turn up anything on this, but I'm sure this has been discussed.

does anyone use a router bit (panel, thumbnail....) for making a carve top????

Thats the short answer? That protractor is pretty damn quick IMO.

thanks for the input. I was just looking at the leevalley page at the assortment of protractors. I will give one of them a shot.

I will also look into the doing it the "math" way. I was never very good at math and thought I'd like to take some courses now that I'm older (and maybe wiser )

I've been working on plans for my first set neck guitar and was planning on building a neck jig. As I was thinking about building it I pulled out my neice's 7th grade protractor and found it difficult to use as the axis was about an inch from the bottom or the protractor.

it is great for measuring 2 dimensional angles on paper, but I found it difficult to use on pieces of wood.

can anyone suggest a better tool for measuring small angles???

thanks for all the great input. I had not thought of the circular saw blade. a table saw is one of the only power tools I have.

as I am looking at building my first neck (been buying bolt ons) for a set neck guitar I though i would start practicing my fret slotting and inlays. I have seen the fret slotting set ups in both stew mac and LMII. The stew mac seem to be less expensive, but the LMii seems to able to account for the carve of the fingerboard.

anyone have any thoughts.... pros and cons on these or other fret slotting jigs???

I have not posted before, but appreciate everyone's post as I have learned alot from stopping by every few day to read all the wisdom from forum memebers.\

I am getting ready to move from bolt on necks and wanted to try a set neck or even a neck-thru.

can anyone suggest the best resource (book...etc...) for step by step instructions on building the neck? with the angled back headstock, truss rod, shaping the neck and the radius of the fretboard.

I may be getting ahead of myself, but I would at least like to start moving in that direction.
