I have used many a distortion pedal...one of the best ones I used is the Digitech Metal Master and another one I enjoy very much is the Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion (you can find that for like $40 on ebay).
The mega distortion can cover the range of disortion that the DS-1 can and a whole lot more...it can get a lot heavier and also cover a nice growling range and get a kind of overdrive pedal sound to it if you want...although it can't replicate a full out overdrive pedal. So thats what my vote goes for...

Ok...i've started to take the finish off with a chemical stripper. I'd like to know if anyone has any tips on this just to make sure I don't do anything stupid...

By violin cuts I imagine you mean f-holes. Unless the body is a semi-hollow you wont really be able to do them. You could refinish it and then use an f-hole decal to get the look. To answet your question, the easiest way to cut f-holes IMO (in a proper body) is with a router and template.
not F-holes lol but do you see the the sides of the body with where it has those square cuts...i mean those

OK...I have an Ibanez RG321MH that I plan to do some custom cuts violin cuts on
then I will repaint either a ferrari type yellow or a tangerine red color similar to that pic
i need to know what would be good to make those cuts...
here is the example, its a peavey v-type
