I have a lil project on the go and was told that you can make your own pickups. how difficult would this be to do?

Hi making pickups isnt too bad, you just need about 6 months to practice, plenty of wire to break over and over, ctting the wound coil back off the bobbin a million times before getting everything right, oh and make a winder and have at it. Let me know and i can point you in the right direction for some parts if needed. Benbo

Have a look at Dash's second "here" link, that's my website showing how I built my first pickup. It took me a couple of hours to do not 6 months. It really isn't that hard to do provided you researched a bit on the subject before.

I've been reading up on potting pups and I have a few questions about it.

First question, I have an Epiphone vintage sg400, could I benefit from potting my stock pups, could it effect my sound that much, or should I just spring for some new ones?

Second question, I've read that pups with the chrome covers can be submerged with the covers on them. That sounds a bit weird to me, does that mean my pup covers will have a layer of wax on them, and should I remove that wax after its done or leave it on.

Last question, I don't have any experience soldering or doing any type of electrical work on guitar. Is it fairly easy to take everything a part and put it back together? My dad is a very experienced welder and an amateur electrician, should I get him to do all the soldering, or is it pretty straight forward.

BE CAREFUL!!!! Make sure the wax is not above 150 degrees, 20% parafin 80% beeswax mix, submerge them face down until you see no bubbles, then take them out and put them face down on a paper towel, some wax will come out, but after a couple minutes it will cool some stopping it for coming out, when they are cool to the touch but not cold, pick them up and wipe them off with a towel or something you dont want to keep, the wax will ruin anything you get it on, the pickup itself will still be warm enough to wipe off the wax from the cover with ease, then let it cool completely and polish the remaining residue/film off, oh and screw the pole pieces almost flat with the surface of the cover, makes it easier to wipe off the wax without hitting the poles. the differences between duncan designed and actual duncans are at least as noticeable as the differences between floyd rose and liscensed floyd rose.

  i have never been happy with duncan designed...before i switched to emg i used to switch all of my guitars to actual duncans as soon as i could.

the real duncans really are superior in high gain applications.i know everybody wants to believe it is all hype...but it really is NOT.

do you think seymour duncan would even permit that?

Duncan designed pickups are not even close to real duncans, they are way bright and brittle in the bridge position and way to bright and brittle in the neck position, if you get a decent one, if not the neck will be like a mississippi mud pie

Ok how much can i fit onto a Hummer bobbin of 42 and 43 guage?

Hi, you can get about 4K per bobbin with 42 maybe a little more, watch your tension, not too much and not too little, 43 can get upwards of about mid 6K to 7K per bobbin, 44 you can get as much as 9 to 10K, wind pattern is also important in the sound it will give as is the coil shape, different wire can affect the tone as well, formvar, solderon, enamal etc.. As far as unbalanced coils, you get even more tonal variations, but remember, both coils need to be pretty close to the same resistance for them to work to cancel out noise from each other, hence humbucker. uneven sounds great but you do get some noise. Hope this helps out.

I am building a flying v guitar, and my last purchase is the pickups. i have been eyeing the Seymour Duncan Distortion set, but even after listening to the sample on the website, i was considering maybe a Dimarzio PAF pro with a Super Distortion for the price over the Duncans. I am not going to buy the set of the Duncans since i want them in white and F-spaced, which doesnt come with the price of the set.

any suggestions?
