  1. Hi, I'm only a part time Floyd Rose user but when I do use one I really hate tuning with the fine tuners (too fiddly, tuning changes as you touch the bridge, etc.). Could you take the clamp off the lock nut, install locking locking tuners and tune at the headstock instead? Would this work or am I missing the point? Jon
  2. Thanks! We've got an Allparts supplier in the UK called Pincotts. Here is the link if any other Brits are interested: http://www.pincottsonline.co.uk/viewproduc...Id=108&nLevel=1
  3. Hi, I've recently wound my first humbucker but, having thought I had found suppliers of all the neccessary compents, I'd forgotten about the base plates (the metal bit at the bottom that the spring screw goes into). Does anyone know where to get them? They come attached to any humbucker you buy so they can't be a very popular item to buy on their own. Thanks, Jon
  4. Thanks for the quick replies. I think the reasons above answer my question pretty comprehensively. Jon
  5. Is there a reason why oak and pine aren't used on guitars? They seem to be used for everything else and must be pretty cheap. Thanks, Jon
  6. I'm thinking of finishing one of my guitars with a pencil drawing. Would it be best to draw the picture on paper first then attach it like the material finish? Or do you draw directly on the guitar? Thanks, Jon
  7. UK libraries do pay the authors every time a book is taken out. My mum writes gardening books and periodically gets royalty cheques from the UK library service. The most a book can make is £6000, otherwise popular authors would bankrupt the library. Jon
  8. Hi, I'm planning on building my first body from an ash blank soon. I was wondering what are the minimum tools you need to do a good job? I'm not really talking about hand tools but power tools. I'm getting ready to invest some money but I don't want to buy something I don't need. I'm guessing I wil need a router, some kind of belt sander and a band saw. Is this right? Thanks, Jon
  9. I was just watching the section of John Petrucci's Rock Disclipine videowhere he discusses his gear. When demonstrating his twin humbucker guitars he showed that using a three way switch positions 1 and 3 gave the bridge and neck pickips on there own respectively. In position two the inner coil of each of his humbuckers was selected. This was wired so that it gave the same sound as Strat positions 2 and 4, including the hum cancelling. I know that on a strat these positions are wired in parrellel but was wondering how you did the same with humbuckers. Does it require a special switch or will a standard Les Paul type work ok? Does it require specially reverse wound humbuckers or wil any coil-tappable ones work? Thanks, Jon
  10. Hi, Does anyone know where to buy the more unusual strat scratchplates like HSS, HSH, HH, etc? All I can find are the standard SSS ones. Would it be simpler to build a custom one from scratch? Thanks, Jon
  11. Hi, I've got a strat copy that I've working on and I'm thinking of converting the 21 fret fretboard to 24. Is this possible? I know the neck pickup might get in the way but other than that is it just a case of removing the old fretboard and sticking a 24 fretter on instead? As there don't seem to be any 24 fret boards avaiable to buy I think I would have to slot and fret my own custom board. What tools and materials would I need for this job? As the cutways aren't deep enough for 24 frets I think I will have to make them a little deeper. Again what tools would I need to cut the cutaways? Thanks, Jon
  12. I voted Ibanez. I've got a few of their superstrats by my fav guitar is my 1981 Ibanez Artist with active EQ. Its got the lowest action on any guitar I've ever played and sounds amazing, much better than a les paul! (much cheaper too!)
  13. It's rosewood but I think Brian has answered my question already. Thanks, Jon
  14. Hi, I've just obtained a guitar neck, the fretboard of which needs refinishing. The previous owner sanded away the finish on some of the board for "decoration". I was wondering if there is a standard finish which is used on fretboards or if not what options there are. Thanks, Jon
  15. Thanks for looking. I've some success looking for magnets and magnet wire. But neither are particularly easy to find or purchase. Jon
  16. Hi, I've been lurking for a few months on this board but this my first post. I'm looking at building my own pickups but I'm having major problems finding the parts, especially magnets. I know Stewmac sell pickup wire and a winding machine and I can use old pickups for the bobbin. Does anyone know where to buy suitable magnets for pickups? Will any magnet do? Can you buy sheets of magnet that you cut to size? If so where from? Any help would be great. Thanks, Jon
