  1. Hello, I want to install a Golden Age humbucker in my latest guitar, it will only have 1 humbucker so I will like to put a mini toggle switch to split the humbucker so it´ll sound like a single coil also (I don´t know what´s the right name to this, is it "coil tap"?). Well, the Golden Age humbucker only have 2 wires + ground, so my question is: can I do it with this humbucker? or I will have to look for a 4-wire humbucker? thanks a lot.

  2. When you have problems with your tremolo unit it could be: problems with the tuners, with the nut and with the tremolo unit itself. The locking tuners help a lot with fixed bridges and with tremolos (I think Jeff Beck uses them and he uses a standard tremolo bridge). Also when the nut isn´t properly fitted it could tend to pinch(?) the strings, not allowing them to return to pitch. If you don´t wanna change the tremolo bridge you can use the tremsetter, Kirk Hammett from metallica uses it, and he does some wild bending (but he uses a FR tremolo). Lastly it could be the bridge posts, maybe they´re worm. You can improve your stability by checking and improving these areas, goo luck.

p.s. I don´t know if you can use the tremsetter and the Sure Claw together, you can ask the folks from StewMac.

  3. hello asm, I've just built a neckthrough SG (I will be posting pics real soon) so I think I can answer your questions:

    1. I think if you´re planning on using a maple top it would be a little more difficult because you have to be very accurate with the body/neck area, it has to fit perfectly around the neck. Mine is mahogany because I like it that way, but you can use the maple.

    2. I also made a Les Paul copy, and I think that building the neckthrough was way easier than the set neck. To me it was easy to glue the wings and then planing the center piece to match the top level. In either case you need to draw your plans full size so you can check the angles and everything. And if you have experience in woodworking I would say go for it, build the three kinds of necks I would say the neckthrough was ther easiest, but please draw it first THEN cut, there´s one sayin: "measure twice, cut once"

    3. I think you can use any kind of trussrod, I bought the Hot Rod trussrod from StewMac, it worked perfectly and besides in a neckthrough and a set neck and a bolt-on the trussrod works the same.

    4. If you check this page www.everythingsg.com in the vintage area there are some ads where you can check the specs the SG´s have. I built a Standard so I use a 3 degree, but you can see a range from 2 to 4 degree, depending on the model. I think you wouldn´t have any problem if you use a 3 degree angle.

    5. I use the Hiscock´s "make your own electric guitar", he shows how to make a setneck, a bolt-on and a neckthtough, I have learned a lot with that book, if you can buy it you would do yourself a big favor.

    6. I use the guitarbuild.com plans, they seems to be very accurate but the scale in those plans are 25 1/2" and not the original 24 3/4" scale, take that in mind. In fact I use different pics to make it the more accurate as posible because I think the guitatvuild plans are a little too wide for my taste, check a lot of pics and you´ll be fine.

Hope this can help you, and I don´t think they´re stupid questions, you should see some of mine :D cheers

  4. Hello all, I was looking for some Explorer measures because I would like to build one. I saw the couple of plans at Guitarbuild, one says that the body thickness is 3,5 cm (1 3/8") and the other one 4,5 cm (1 3/4 "), I wanna build a Gibson Explorer type, do you know what´s the thickness in that model? Besides the guitarbuild plans are not exact replicas: one is a 25,5" scale neckthrough when the original one was 24 3/4" and the other one is a bolt-on (the original was a set neck). Also I would like to know what´s the measure from the end where the switch is the the other extreme, the upper end where you put the arm; and the distance between the two bottom ends (where you put your arm and where the control knobs are). I´m planning in calibrate an image so I need this to make an accurate template. I have searched through this entire forum and always the answer to the Explorer specs is "go to guitarbuild", please don´t send me there B) , I already have the plans and they´re good I guess, I just need the confirm the measures. If you want, I can put my drawings in this forum, so you can see your contribution for this great forum :D. Thanks a lot for your time and patience and sorry for my english it´s not my native language.

  5. hi, I tried to conect the way you said, the noise and buzz are gone but also I don´t have sound. But when I move the volume button I hear some change, also when I touch the humbucker´s polepieces it does sound, but very low, I barely hear it. do you think that maybe it could be the soldering? because I have noticed that maybe I´m not that good :D

  6. Can someone please help me? I don´t know what I did wrong. I´m using one humbucker (Dimarzio PAF pro), 1 volume, 1 control, and a 5 way switch (Megaswitch "E" model); I´m planning in using one more humbucker but I don´t have it yet.

I will tell in detail what I did, maybe you can help me, all the positions are from the rear control cavity point of view:

-the Humbucker hot output (red) go to the Switch 2nd lung

-the Humbucker ground +shield (green +shield) go to the Switch 5th lung

-the Volume pot 1st lung go to the Tone pot 3rd lung

-Volume 1st lung(left one from top) also go to the Switch 3rd lung

-Volume 2nd lung to Jack middle lung (hot)

-Volume 3rd lung go to the base of the Volume

-Volume base to the Jack left lung (ground)

    -Volume base to Tremolo claw

-Volume base to the Tone pot 3rd lung

-0.022 capacitor from Tone 2nd lung to Tone base

-Switch 3rd lung to Switch 4 lung

and that´s it, please help is the first time I wire a guitar, probably there´s a mistake somewhere but I can figure it out.

  7. I looked with the search function but didn´t find an answer, but I realized that I have made a mistake so I will have to use the wider one, thanks Dr. I will like to say that I like this forum because people are not afraid of asking (I´ve seen some forum where a newbie hardly gets any answer) and here are a lot of people willing to help, thanks a lot.

  8. Hello, I´m about to put the binding in my SG replica and my dilemma is: what size of binding should I put? the 0.040" or the 0.090" width? the first seems too narrow and the second a little too wide, does anybody know what size Gibson uses? (maybe neither :D ) Thanks for your help, I´m painting my LP replica and will be posting soon, best regards
