  1. Hey Wongster,

Nice to meet you, we may be some use to eachother because I am also doing building a telecaster. Mine will be done in a month but let me try to answer some of your questions.

If you want a more subtle sound sort of more like a strat I would reccomend an alder body. If you want that really punchy classic tele sound go with swamp ash. The only problem with swamp ash is that it costs more and it is hard to cut.

If you plan on making the neck your in for a lot of work. There are many tools that you will need in order to properly make a neck from scratch. I have decided to buy the neck for my project since it will cost at lest another $200 if I wanted to make it myself.

Im guessing that you are going to be using the school wood shop for your work.

Everything that you need you can get from Stewmac's website except for a tele template which you need to get from Rons site.

For me building the tele has not been cheap, I have spent quite a fortune. See if you can get your parents to pay for half.

  2. Thanks for the advice guys,

I should have said this in the begining but yes i am trying to cut out the body shape and, I do already have a template, I orderd it off of Ron's site. It sounds like a router and jigsaw is the way that i want to go but i want to ask, which router and which jigsaw do you reccomend (does it have to be a Plunge router)? I want to know because the jigsaw that i looked at in the rental store would have had a pretty tough time cutting through the body blank.

Also Mickguard you said something about a template bearing bit from stewmac, is this it?

    link

    Thanks again.

Edit: Since ive already spent alot, do i need a router and jigsaw or could I make with just getting the router (not sure how that would work but....)?

  3. Hi, Im on my first build. Im going to be building a tele out of a swamp ash blank from stewmac. I thought that i was going to have a shop available but that fell through. Now i need your help on deciding what to do. I did some searching and found that people had some prefrences on jigsaws vs Plunge routers, I went to a rental store and they thought that i was nuts to try to use a jigsaw ( the one they had seemed a little small). As far as a plunge router they seem kinda expensive and i dont have any expirence with them. I also found this

    >will it be able to do the trick?

I also have another option which would be to go to the First Act guitar studio and have them do it for me.

    What would you suggest?

This is somthing for school and i need to have this guitar cut out by monday, other wise i would not be stressing.

  4. Im planing out my next project to build a tele from scratch and i have run into an issue. So after i use my template and route out the place for the pickups and controls how am i supposed to make that tunnel for the wires to run from th eneck pickup to the controls?

I am really worried and i hope there is a simple answer to this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  5. don't know if this will help you or not but you can buy decal paper for your inkjet printer. it comes in white background or clear and is the same size as copy paper. you can scan your pics and print your own. just google inkjet decal paper for suppliers.

I looked into that because I a am planing on doing something similar to Ledzendrix1128. It sounds like it will work for me but, it says that the film is a laquer based product. Will this cause any problems with the polyurathane that Im going to put on after it?

Or is it too little laquer to make a diffrence?

  6. ... You have to remember that your finish will only remain as good as the bond of your stickers. If you put your stickers onto raw wood, the adhesion isn't going to be great. It might be for a while, but it will diminish. When it does, you will likely see what appears to be bubbles in your finish. You want a smooth flat surface to put the stickers on, even then, over time you MAY see them start to lift under the clear causing the bubble look. At the very least, I would seal the wood completely and sand it dead smooth, then I would apply a couple coats of clear. Sand that nice and flat with some 800. Apply your stickers, then clear over them. You'll need a lot of clear and then sanding to make it all level out, then a final coat of clear. If you don't really care about having a perfect finish then by all means, just apply the stickers and clear over them, it won't be perfect but the stickers won't peel off.

Found this on in the sticker search. It basically means for you that after you clear you need to sand it even and then clear coat again. The amount you need to clear and sand is depending on how much your stickers have made the surface of your guitar uneven. You also could have big problems with the stickers peeling off while your working. To help this I might try to super glue the problem areas and then hope for the best. You also might want to try to contact TeiscosRock and findout how his ordeal went if he ended up going through with it.

  7. Thanks mattia,

Im gonna see if I can find a way to do that. I sorta threw that option out at first because I figured I wouldn't be able to do that out of my basement but I actually probably could do it here at the shop at school. Its a shame that I didn't ask sooner because they are really picky about changing your project. There is also another problem.

The new problem will be that I have to some how do a community service aspect. I was planing to give one of the re-finished guitars to a charity but if I make my own it would suck to have to give it all away.

Im now trying to think of another way that I could incorporate a community service piece to my project.

If you have any ideas of how I can incorporate community service without parting with my guitar please let me know.

    Thanks again.

Edit: Well I just went to my confrence and pitched the idea of building a guitar from scratch. I think it went pretty well. I decided to have my comunity service be that I give guitar lessons.

If it passes Ill show you guys all the pictures in the end.

  8. Hello everyone,

I've been reading the fourm for a while and now I need to ask a favor. At my school there is a program called senior project. The program lasts for 5 weeks. I am proposing to re-finish guitar. The shop teacher will not aprove of the idea unless all 150 hours are going to be used. What can I propose to do that will fill up 150 hours?

I thought if I re-finished 3 guitars it would be enough?

I would be doing the works including veneer and a custom paint job mabey even re wireing the pickups and electronics.

Please telll me how many hours similar projects that you have done took.

Im frustrated because I think that re-finishing 3 for a biginer is more than enough but I need some people with kwnoledge to testify to it.
