  1. Okay great to know I didn't ruin it...lol. So I have a little more to do with the razor blade up but the headstock. After that I will do the sanding as you said and then have to make a decision about the finish. I know I asked this before but if I choose the paint route, it will not cover those right? The staining then wouldn't as well but it will just make the wood look nice overall. I guess I have to decide. When you say "oiling" you meet finishing/staining the wood? Thank you so much!
  2. Arghhh. Okay as you can see some blemishes below. I'm not too worried about the light stuff as it gives it personality but I'm concerned as to whether I messed it up or not. What are everyone's thoughts? I can look at kits online or just the necks. Thanks everyone!
  3. Makes sense thank you. I will try with a razor blade to remove the rest of the paint on the neck. More to come!
  4. Yes I totally thought the heavy grit paper would make it easier. I've noticed that the 320 worked pretty well with this. It just takes time and elbow grease. I agree...deal with them on the wood and it's still super smooth so I think it would work.
  5. Thank you for the advice. Wet sandpaper it is for the body. Then for the remainder of the neck, just continue to do it by hand?
  6. Okay so here is some more progress. Scratches did occur so I take full blame for those. To me it give it personality so I'm okay with it. My question then is with the scratches..if I were to paint the neck as opposed to just polishing the wood...would the scratches get covered up or will they still be shown. A co-worker of mine also offered me to borrow his hand sander which I may take him up on for the guitar body. Thoughts? Tips? I just need to get it to the grey finish right? Thanks!
  7. Makes sense. Thank you. I’m going to be working on it in the next few days so more to come.
  8. I was going to leave the front of the headstock alone and just sand the logo off lightly so I can custom it to something of the family. Are you referring to the back side of the headstock? To clarify wet meaning add a drop of water? Gotcha. So just to clarify again, this is just taking the piece of sandpaper and soaking it as you said above? My original intent was to paint the neck TV yellow as well but as we are talking I can see it being nice with a wood finish on the back side that's oiled. Come to think of it, I think it would look very nice!!! Thanks again!
  9. So do I have to sand the rest of the neck to the bare wood or can I just do the rest to the dull grey/matte?
  10. Got it. Thank you as I wasn't grasping it there for a minute but now I am. I'll continue to work on the next but just take it down to the dull grey.
  11. Ah so I really don’t need to take it to the wood? So really what I’m looking for is to get it to a very dull grayish color? Then that would be enough for the primer and then eventually main color? Is my thinking right there? Thanks.
  12. Okay so here are more updates on the neck. The hand tool I got came with a sheet of 120 and I started with that and then worked my way up to the 800. It took me quite a while to get to the pics below. The challenging part is going to be the corners. Any tips for that is appreciated!
  13. Okay so I started with a small part of the neck and did exactly how you said. To me it doesn't look like there's a primer unless this is a clear primer? It took a lot to get it to the picture below. I'm assuming that's enough for this to be ready for repainting? Any advice and/or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  14. Thank you both so much. I'll be working on the sanding of the neck this weekend so more updates and questions to come.
  15. Gotcha and then either put a new logo or somehow get off the Epiphone... Thanks!
  16. Thank you both for the comments. Yes, I was thinking something representing the family as this is actually a "family" project and my oldest daughter has become super engaged with it. When sanding...I am also sanding the front side as well with the Epiphone on it?
  17. Awesome thank you for the visual. That helps a ton. I didn't think about the pick up switch or the jack input. What would I need to do with those? I'm assuming the pick up switch is what's pictured here? Any suggestions for the headstock? Is is worth trying to get the Epophone off? I've seen some use a Gibson decal but I wasn't sure. I was just thinking out loud. Thanks!
  18. I guess both the tuning knobs and tuning machines...lol. I've heard guitar fetish is not bad and I will check out these other places for sure. SO I can find one I like (even if your supposed to drill it in) and get duck brand carpet tape? Never though about that!
  19. Also I was curious if there is a recommendation for where to get things such as the tuning knobs? I'd like to add a pick-guard but prefer not to drill. Do they sell self-adhesive ones by any chance? I haven't been able to find any. Thanks!
  20. Thank you. Next step is to sand it and to get it ready for the repaint. So leave a millimeter of the plastic shield that’s connecting the wire? The old wire (attaches to these pick ups) will just stay there and a new set of picks ups would come with new wiring? Thank you!

  22. Makes sense. So snip them on the other side by the controls? I"ll keep it close and then hang onto the epiphones. Thank you so much.
