  1. What tools, at the bare minimum would be required to make a good neck? I have the tools to make a body...i.e router, power sander, drill, drill press, clamps. Neck wise I have a 9" radius sanding block. I am not worried about the price..although i am a poor student i will stop at nothing until my guitar is finished. But i don't want to buy anyhting I don't need. I found the tutorial on fretting a new neck by brian very useful. thanks
  2. I know next to nothing about routers apart from how to use them. I have no idea about the type of bits that are available. I have heard on this forum a load of people talking about making templates for neck pockets and things. What is a template bit? I understand it could be a straight cut bit with a bearing on it. Are bits available to buy like this or do I somehow put a bearing onto a straight cut bit? I have started my first guitar project with very little wood working skills. I started on the neck and am really enjoying it. So far things are going well. I would just like to know about this as I don't like the idea of freehand routing!!!! not with my skills at least thanks PS. any searches on google for tempate bits just show up straight cut bits without bearings
  3. I just ordered a graphite nut blank along with all the other bits and pieces for my first guitar project. I have never cut a nut before so is there any special tools i need to do it? thanks
  4. thanks. thats a great help. I like the idea of the TPDT switch, sounds good.
  5. Hi I just ordered 2 riogrande vintage tallboys and a muy grande for my first guitar strat project. the idea is an SRV sound. anyway I want all the standard 5 way switch fender setup. i know how to wire that up thats no probs. I also want to be able to have a sixth setting were by pushing or pulling a switch or pot or something I can get the neck and bridge pickups activated together. Is this possible and if so how can it be done? I know there was a similar post but that was to do with humbuckers and single coils are slightly different. Thanks it would be a great help.
  6. Hi I just downloaded the strat plans from the .zip file. I can open them up in photoshop and acrobat reader but how do I print it across several A4 sheets? I want to eventually join the sheets up so i can make a template to make my first guitar I just bought a router and belt sander. now all i need is the template and plenty of MDF to practise on before i get down to the serious business!
  7. I am looking to start building my first guitar soon and i dont know which book to buy to give me the best advice. I am looking to build a strat replica just to start off with. It will hopefully be a stevie ray vaughan tribute. ie left handed trem on a right handed guitar, texas specials and SRV inlayed on the 12th fret. the tutorials on this site would almost be enough to tell you how to build a guitar anyway but i want a good book for more advice and references as the more knowledge i have b4 i start the better! Ps the tutorial on removing a fretboard by Kevan Geier is excellent. it did take me about 1.5 hours to get a rosewood fb off an old rockwwod strat copy but it did a great job! I am using the neck on my first guitar but am puttin on an ebony fb. The neck is flatsawn so i may replace it later but its still very straight after about 7 yrs of lying about.
