Forster bits with a hand drill? no thanks!!
I use a forster bit without drama.
-
hi gang, I have a bunch of crazy grained EIR fretboards both for mandos and guitars and I don't want to loose the grain.
If I oil them they'll darken down.
anyone ever varnish the fretboard?
Thanks in advance!!
heres a guitar neck that I'm working on at the minute.......
-
Never heard of such a thing, but then that doesn't meant they're out there.
Can't imagine what it'd sound like!!
-
Nope, not even slightly.
This is a VERY common mis conception, and one I held until recently.
it's not the strings vibrating over the soundhole that makes the sound.
it's the strings driving the bridge, which makes the top vibrate which pushes the air in & out.
Bear in mind Tacoma & McPherson have soundholes way up on the top edge.......
-
yup, I use Gotoh minis.
and I squeeze 'em in as tight as possible to reduce the diving head syndrome.........
have a look at the doubleneck thread....
-
Wooooow.
You have a BBC B/Acorn in the room!!
A truly beautiful instrument. Quirky, but clean and very functional in design
the BBC or the doubleneck?
I edited your post because there is a 1 pic per post rule here, and I don't know why, but I waited almost 4 minutes and your pics were not loaded on my PC. And I'm on Comcast.oops, sorry!!
thanks.

Oh all right!!
details?
walnut back & sides
Sitka Spruce top,
leopardwood rosette.
mahogany binding,
maple/mahogany/maple necks with EIR fretboards.
12th fret neck join to reduce the head heavy feel
3mm MOP fret marker dots on the edges
bridge is EIR from a coffee table.......
a pair of piezos under the saddles straight to the strap jack
bone nuts, saddles & pins (only 6 pins on the 12 neck so yes, 2 strings per pin.......)
and yes, the bracing is a custom hybrid Axx sort of thing......

Ah to be 14 again!!
here's one of my pupils road testing the doubleneck.......
it's prize night tonight and he's playing guitar in a m,usical interlude and he BEGGED me.....
but it's still got as couple of dead frets so I had to be a meanie & say no!!
spose I could give y'all a link to a soundclick..........

no problems with that!!
I'm finishing off # 25 & 26 and I've never cut a fret slot yet......
does that mean I'm cheating?
Don't care!!

a pal posted this on another forum....
(Jam session BTW)
This is under contstruction but I will let you know whats going on so far...I'm bulding a flying V with a own buildbody but I've use a Epiphone neck wich I glue into to body with a special trix of my own.
(on the pics the neck not in fit)
Can something be more ugly than the terrible Epiphonehead?
Plugged...
Time to "kill" the head
And it's already look alright!
New "wings" in maple...
Going to be something like this... have'nt decide yet if I should go the Gibsonway or my own...
and heres the finished article....
OK, it's not an acoustic, but yes, it can be done.......
-
Doubleneck has the second set of strings on.
A LOAD of tidying up to do now.
screws in tuners
nuts tidied
pickups under saddles
preamp/tuner & switch fitted
strap buttons
frets on 6 neck sorted
intonation on saddles set
trussrod covers
and I've just noticed that one head has the corners rounded and the other one doesn't.......
Goodwood, that top's looking good!!
great to see someone else who has glue on the inside, and not an internal finish that looks like it was done by a machine....
-
possible but you need to mod around a bit too......
you need an earth to the strings.
Stewmac do a beastie called a plate mate for repairing damaged bridge plates.
if you solder the earth on your pup to this, then all your steel strings (didn't I mention steel strings?) will make an electrical connection to the circuit
oh yes, you'll need steel strings........
-
OK, the doubleneck progresses...
Double neck bridge.....
removing the varnish from the top so that the glue will hold the bridge in place.....
glued & clamped
SOME strings!!
now at this point the nut isn't glued in place. the screws which hold the tuners are still in the bag. the saddle isn't intonated (or even level) and the frets have been pressed into place but NOT filed or levelled in ANY way......
action's not TOO bad.....
and you know what's amazing?
it plays!!!
there is one high fret about #15 that need looked at, but below the 12th all the notes ring free!!
some one asked dimensions.....
body is 17 1/2" at it's widest and 3 1/2" deep
-
That which doesn't kill us makes us strong.........
Learn from it and become a better person as a result......
but feel free to swear a lot (in private naturally) when it happens!!
-
not my thing at all, but that is STUNNING work.
SUPERB!!
-
Looks like the body is a bit oversized, how wide is the lower bout? and how deep did you make the box at the tail?
dunno, it's still hanging up in work, drying over the weekend.........
l'll try to remember to measure it on Monday.........
Oh yes, I neglected to mention. That rosette looks classy as all get out. Sharp!thanks!!
lt's definitely my best yet!!
it's only segmented as I didn't have a big enough offcut to make a solid one
-
OK, the soundhole patch is a bit rough round the edges, but it's for me and not for sale, and no-one will ever see inside but me and anyone who looks at this forum!!
I'd only started carving the braces in this pic.
there is another V running from the main X back to the tail block that went in after this pic.
This is the second of these beasts I've built and the other has had 10 months at full tension (none of yer detune a 12 rubbish here!!) with no problems.......
and the back.......
-
acoustic builds?
like this you mean?
Walnut back & sides,
sitka top
mahogany binding
Maple mahogany maple lammed necks
rosewood fretboards
rosewood bridges to follow.........
Hoipefully I'll have her strung up by Hallowe'en
-
Naw, nothing yet over there, they're more US orientated that here seems to be.
Also, there are a few sponsors on the OLF who get ALL the wood orders!!! (and for good reason too from what I've seen)
I thought maybe a forum with more europeans might have tried them.
-
the only time I've used plastic binding I used Evostik impact adhesive.
put in in the channel and on the inside of the binding, left it 10 mins then stuck it.
no probs.
-
hi folks, anyone ever used these guys?
their prices (which you have to ask for) sem pretty reasonable and they do free shipping and cash on delivery on orders of over 200 Euro
-
here is is beside it's bigger brother (which I re-set the neck and made a maple bridge for.... it's now on Evil Bay, but I'll be keeping the S
-
I've cut about 2" from the forward bout to move the bridge deeper into the body. 12th fret neck join also moves in a little over a 14th, and I never play up there anyway!!
Back, sides, rosette & neck are walnut, top is sitka, binding & fretboard are rosewood, purfling maple.
scale is standard Stewmac 13 and a bit inches, bridge is ebony from two black keys off a dead piano.
I'm DELIGHTED with it!!
-
OK troops, here's the latest incarnation of the mandonaught.
May I present......
The mandonaught S

why not? if it's what you have, then go for it!! it smells nice, looks nice and is stable.
sorry, not a clue. I'm pretty sceptical about massive tone charactaristis in electric woods. the pups, amp & FX do far more!!
